Dear Forumers

I have been intrigued by the strange nature of petrol prices in Malaysia.

Currently the pump price for RON97 petrol is supposed to be RM2.45 and RON92 petrol should be much lower.

However, whenever my girlfriend goes to Shell and pumps the "super" brand (from the green coloured pump) she pays RM2.45. Now, as far as I can see, the red coloured V-power petrol at shell would be RON97, so the "Super" petrol ought to be RON92.

So why is my gf paying RM2.45 if Shell super is indeed RON92 petrol?

Hence, I would like to ask 12 usj.com.my forumers to help participate in a little ad hoc research to determine the price of petrol of RON97 and RON92 in the usj area.

I hope that you can pump petrol and give me a copy of your receipt so I can correlate pump price/L with the type of petrol (RON92 or 97) pumped.

Please volunteer by signing up to any of the following positions.

1. Petronas RON92 >
2. Petronas RON97 >
3. Shell RON92 >
4. Shell RON97 >
5. BHP RON92 >
6. BHP RON97 >
7. ExxonMobil RON92 >
8. ExxonMobil RON97 >
9. Esso RON92 >
10. Esso RON97 >
11. Caltex RON92 >
12. Caltex RON97 >

I intend to write a paper about this and present it to FOMCA and it might be a way to help make petrol prices clearer and more consumer friendly in Malaysia in the near future.

Cheers, m

The red colour pump at Shell is V-Power, a premium petrol which is more expensive than the usual Ron 97. However in some stations (especially in small towns, "regular" petrol, which is Ron 92 is also available instead of V-Power. Some of the pump handles are also red. So red Shell in KL may not be the same as that in Tapah.

The green pump in shell is ron 97...it is difficult to find ron 92 now..cars with electronic control unit can adjust itself for use of ron92

Yes, you are wrong.

The other brands sell RON92 as well except that it is not widely available in all their stations. Unless it is convenient, the savings derived from using RON92 might not compensate for one to drive all the way to find such a station.

In response to their query and as reported in the Motor Trader, only Caltex confirmed that the amount of additives in RON92 is the same as RON97 for their fuel. The others, sad to say, did not respond or chose to remain silent.

fair enough, but let's get the data together and see if it is worth further review.

Thanks Chewie for volunteering. Chewie, please try to find out which petrol is RON97. If the "Super" is RON97 there must be some kind of proof. And if the V-power is greater than RON97 I want to know *how?*

I can tell you that the highest RON Ive ever seen (before coming to Malaysia) was RON94.

Shell Super (green) is RON97.
Shell V-Power (red) is also RON97 but with different & additional addictives (some say it's octane booster).
Shell Regular (less vibrant red) is RON92.

Generally speaking, Shell stations which don't sell V-Power, will carry Shell Regular.

...so I can correlate pump price/L with the type of petrol (RON92 or 97) pumped...

As of now, I can tell you surely that all RON92 petrol in Peninsular M'sia (with the exception of Kelantan & maybe inner Terengganu, Pahang) is priced at RM2.30/L irregardless of brand & station.

While RON97 (with the exception of Shell V-Power) is RM2.45/L.

Btw, the fuel selling at Esso & Mobil is exactly the same.

I stopped using Shell petrol which I felt was ALWAYS less peppy than the other green label. Unfortunately I'd loose out on Bonuslink points at Shell but I seem to feel shortchanged when it comes to performance compared to the other. Sorry, there's only 2 stations at my area and I ain't going to fill up at another brand station further away.

Ask me to write to Shell to complain..I DID!....no reply!.

I'm using Esso Ron 92 or Mobil Ron 92, blue color nozzles. (Ron97 is purple nozzle) Both Mobil and Esso belong to same company.

Ron92 is Rm2.30/Liter, confirmed.

I usually pump Shell Super ie Green. And I keep all my receipts. So no problem if you want them. Just tell me how many you want and date circa.

Rgds.
