>> If you are not in the top 100 ... no point to mention la!~
9) Have the highest number of unemployed "graduates" in the book of record!
>> Graduates want "graduated" jobs ... like sitting in front of a PC whole day and surfing the net during office hours and paid by the employer.
If you are from a 499th ranked university ... then I suppose you could read, write and speak a few words of English la ...

I think the culture here is not of professionalism. I suggest that uni students be made to pass a grooming course of say 3 months, to prepare them for the working world after they graduate.

I think the culture here is not of professionalism. No need to think.
It is!
It is sickening that many so called graduates cannot even do simple standard 6 maths!
Yes all this makes you worry & wonder.
One forumer pointed out that we should not to ONLY depend on this gomen for your child's education.
And rightly so.
It does not take a genius to figured out they game plan.
Look at the international schools and you will see the ministries children there will speak volume about 'bolehland' education.
Read up on pywong's The Rat Race & the Pyramid threads.
I suggest that uni students be made to pass a grooming course of say 3 months, to prepare them for the working world after they graduate.3 months?! 30 years also not enough.
Most have been given the 'tongkat' for so long that they cannot let it go anymore.
It is more rote learning with close one eye and flip flop policies.

What the parent said is so true, the same thing happen in my son's school.
School is the place the teenagers get to 'lepak' for hours and discussed about computer games. A place where they find an excuse to 'ponting'.
I spent a lot of time and thousands ringgit to get him out of the 'lepak' and games addiction during year end holidays, just to find him back into it when school reopen. It was heart wrenching and frustrating!
Luckily the school is better managed for the better class in the morning session.
It was this experience that I understand why some go for home schooling instead, and how in some countries, it is common to have home schooling.

Mr YAP BOON KAH, Kajang wrote to theStar:-
"Go to a bookshop in Singapore and pick up a Primary 6 English workbook and I can assure you our average local graduate will have problems tackling the school work." -http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/10/9/focus/2210553&sec=focus
No need S'pore Pri6 English, just use Malaysia Pri6 Maths question will do.
And this Bolehland's education is NOT getting better..
Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail said there is a shortage of Chinese and Tamil teachers not only in vernacular schools but in national schools as well. - http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2008/10/9/nation/20081009130440&sec=nation

Many famous university in the world, their facuty is leading the world deveop, but their ranking is not so high.
Like Peking University and Tsinghua University of China, they are good at outerspces problem, missile technology, they can send their Taikongaut to outerspaces, but ranking still not so high.
Like Japanese University, many Japanese Noble Prices winner graduated from those university, but why they stiil lower than NTU adas NUS?

OMG .. this means my degree is worthless ...
most degrees now r more or less worthless, degree only get u to the foot of the door when it comes to employment. Dont be suprise that the door will still swing shut in front of your face, even if a person does well in his education.
Personally in my opinion, there r alot of un-employed grads not because their degree r worthless but whether they want to take up the job or not.
Out of the point abit...
Scenario 1:
My friend took up a job with a company as a fresh grad, knowing that most ppl will first demand a first grad salary. my friend willingly lowered the salary scale Rm 1700.00, in the three mths probation my friend worked his guts out. Sure enuf upon confirmation, the boss gave him an increment to Rm 2,500.00 (my take is the boss also feel guilty hahaa...).

That's what I focus,Do not pay much more attention on University Ranking.
Why those academical advanced University is so low?Just because of they using native language to teach, not English .
From western opinions, they will consider media language first, because other language they can't understand.Australian National University or University of Hong Kong also choose English as media language.
Others universities in Japan,Russia,Korea,France,Germany,Spain, etc have many Noble Price winners, but how come their ranking is lower ?

Bumi 2 yrs jobless grads willing to grab Rm1200 job with GLC! , as sales exec!
2 yrs spent in CarreFour as cashier.
The problem is our universities, syllabus need some major revamping. Study things not relevant or make them ready for the job market. Most of the time, just follow the lecturer says, memorized the stuff, put it in the exam and the pass, probably the universities lower the passing criteria to achieve the quota.
Shame to see that graduates cant even sell in play acting or convince us to buy a product during interviews.
While, I am proud, my daughter sold all the ice sticks (50) I made for her to raise fund for the school last saturday within 1 1/2 hour (at RM3 for 2), while she is just 8 y.o. When I was there around noon, other kids, also try to sell me their products! Unable to buy so much I decline... the bow and say thank you! I would just like to call them back and buy some.... They do that every year, so next year, I will encourage my kids to do some other stuff. So, when they get out of primary school.... they will have experiences... to survive :p

Nowadays the "books" are facts. Kids have to memorized the facts for exam.
Unlike my time when i.e. history are like story book where you read smooth flowing story of history flowing.
Will they appreciate the stuff they learn and memorized? or the Education wann train their memory?

I think New Era Kolej,Hanchiang,Selatan Kolej should be upgrade to university status,to improve Chinese media universites acdama level.
Like China, they using chinese as media language, they also can send taikongaout to outerspaces, they are excellent in sciences.
Should not follow Englsh media langauge to teach sains dan math, using malayu,Tamil,Mandarin is easy to improve

I don't think there the medium of instruction is Mandarin.
Lets not be blind to the fact that China also appreciate other languages like English to advance her economy.
Today for most of her young leaders at the level of city mayors, their first foreign language is English.
In the next decade many will probably have MBAs or PhDs from British or European or American universities.
China is practical enough to understand the need for multilingual to be the global power house, which she will achieved in a decade.
Yes they may negotiate with you in Chinese, but will sit down and have coffee with you or a meal with you and speak in fluent English.
So on the other side of the pacific, many Americans recognized the need for Mandarin as a 'foreign language'.

It would be great if the kids could choose to be taught in whatever language they are comfortable with eg. BM, ENG, MAND or TAMIL.
Later, take the exam in the language they were taught...
In doing so, we can see how effective this is and we may even come to a conclusion which language category scores the highest marks ...(perhaps it's the teaching method of different types of schools would be the source of contention instead ....hmmmm)
But of course to be fair, the resources eg. reference books, learning programs/documentaries should be made available in all four of these languages...
Seems like a lot of work ....sigh
Who has the advantage ?
Well since BM is still a compulsory subject to pass, definitely, those learning in more than one language as a compulsory subject has the advantage(other than their mother tongue).
And the more frequent we use the language the more practice we get.

I thought THES-QS University Ranking is not so serious
On the contrary, the THES-QS is very serious, comprehensive and fair.
However, it's a well known fact, emphatically and repeatedly stated by Times itself, that the THES-QS criteria favour universities with a broad multi-discipline curriculum, and disfavour highly specialised universities or universities with a few prioritised faculties.
There are so many universities around the world that a university well could be a world leader in a certain research area and yet not be on the THES top 500 ranking.

But most of her wealthy class choose English over most other foreign language.
Please understand the word most does NOT meant 100%.

If someone is of a different opinion, you may state your points in the hope you get your message across but it does not mean the other party will agree with you. When the other side decides to differ, just move on, no need to fight over your points.

If someone is of a different opinion, you may state your points in the hope you get your message across but it does not mean the other party will agree with you. I subscribe that "we agree to disagree."
But if the other party do not bother to read and understand my posting than do not quote me or mis-quote me!
I suppose you condone mis-quote?
And this happens not once but several times!

I study in china for many years, now still many people can't speak Putonghua as well.
why must foucs on english studies?which countries' develop because of their using enlish, does France,Japan,Korean,German,Italia,Spain,Russia,Chi na develop because of englsh?dreaming haha
suggest yours should watch a video 《大國崛起》to describe after indurstries revolution, how they develop very fast, because of English????hahaha
great...as I have mentioned earlier. My experience with China started since 1993 till today. Just 2 weeks ago, I was with one of the subsidiaries of Great Wall Group. Great Wall Group is an investment arm of Chinese Government particularly for IT industry.
The factory I visited 2 weeks ago was dealing with recording heads for Hard Disk Industry. Well, most of the management team members there (not to include the expatriate) speak pretty well in English. A couple of fresh graduate engineers I met, they too converse pretty good in English.
Well, I have never mentioned that the development of China is primarily due to introduction of English. However, I see the development and changes over these couple of years that MOST OF THE CHINESE IN THE CORPORATE WORLD are better and more fluent in English.
Lastly, everyone is entitled for his view but it has to be objective.

You are like a UMNOputra!!!!
Which part of this statement do you not understand?
Do you bother to read and understand other people posting?
You have a dictionary or not?
Are you a graduate?
Which university in China did you go to?
Yes,China have sent many scientists go overseas studies,Like Prof.Dr. H.S. Tsien,Prof. Dr.Chien Wei-zang.Prof.Dr Kan-Chang Wang. they even did research in MIT,CIT,those famous universities, they were famous in the world, but after they graduated from overseas, they translate those sciences and technological book into Chinese.to let more students studies,it's easy to help students prepare a good foundation for further studies, they do the research also using Chinese. If you go to China for Academy of Sciences studies, you will find all they research using Chinese.
Otherelse, do you think world sciences develop or discover by English or Technology? Why many Nobel Prize winner are not English native speaker, why many of them using native language to write Academic publishing first?
Ask about which university I studied in China? Nankai university, have ever heard before?People's Republic of China first Prime Minister Chou En-lai studied there before.I also attend class as a non-credit learning student in Peking Universities, and Tsinghua university.

Perhaps, the other party actually does not understand? Give and take is the essence of discussions. Since this is a discussion on English vs mother tongue, I shall give the benefit of the doubt that the other party actually has a problem with English and thus did not grasp the arguements.
I also am aware that some people just stick to their own preferences, regardless of the logical alternatives.
I am not a mediator on this discussion and it is therefore certainly not my role to moderate on issues of misquotes.

Yes,I know now many Chinese can speak fluent in English, because of many of them spent their study life in western. But do you think English is the most important for studies sains dan math?China develop just because of English?Great Wall Group (http://www.greatwall.com.cn/),affiliated directly to the central government,is a large group specializing in the computer industry and relevant industries. Also like
Peking University Founder Group (http://www.founderpku.com/index.html),they have branch in Malaysia,CEO is Teh Hon Seng (http://politicalpoems.blogspot.com/),an excellent Malaysian Chinese literature writer.
Grasp English is just a tool only, not because of English can help improve technology.Chinese in China only use English to communicate, not using English for Science and Technology research.Don't to have blind faith in English useful for improve sciences and math.

I was forced to read this whole thread to find out what the arguement was about.
Unknown to Great, a lot of people have actually agreed with Great on various points. However, whenever anyone mentions that English is being used in China, Great seems to erase that from his/her mind and continue to push the same storyline about doing science and maths in Mandarin.
Great, I suggest you read what I had written above very slowly and understand what I am saying. This is because I will not tolerate another arguement from you with regards the power of the Chinese language - please note that no one had downgraded the language but just said that people in China are now seeing the importance of using English ... not because they have surrendered Mandarin, mind you ...
If you had followed Sarah Palin's line of arguements in the US vice-presidential debate, you will see that she just stuck to her terms of discussion, regardless of the actual topic being discussed - purely because she refused to move into territory that is alien to her. At this juncture, I find that Great is simply doing just that.
Let us just move on...

I observed that in the older days our University intake requirement can be categorised into three different categories.
For example:
Students belongs to category A : require more than X points for a course
Students belongs to category B : require X- 10 points for the same course
Students belongs to category C : require x/2 points for the same course
During my time the higher your point shows your have better result. Students belongs to category C has class bimbingan on top of normal lectures. This class is to help them do better in yearly examination.
Today, most national schools' teachers belongs to category C. One school I know only have 1 teacher belongs to category A. The teacher said, "teacher not attending class is just one of the issues, sometimes, you wonder whether the teacher teach the right thing to the students."
Another teacher said, " This teacher is at higher grade and get higher pay too, but she is teaching lower six, when the students join me in Upper Six, they didn't even have the basic to advance to upper six level!" It was very tough for her.
Form one to Form three Syllabus for Sejarah and Geography has shrunk so much that the pupils after three years of lessons are still "katak dalam tempurong Malaysia". Is this because our teachers can no longer cope with the old syllabus? Or "katak dalam tempurong Maylaysia" our education direction?
