I read a health article recently highlighting the danger of eating rice!

According to the article :-

1. Rice has no fibre and it is 'calorie dense' food
2. Rice is chemically no different from sugar (one bowl of cooked rice is the caloric equivalent of 10 teaspoons of sugar~! )
3. Rice cannot be digested unless it is well cooked. Even it is cooked, it is difficult to digest
4. Rice becomes sugar, it spikes circulating blood sugar within half an hour
5. Eating Rice causes you to drink less water
6. Rice prevents the absorption of several vitamins and minerals

The article goes on teaching how to take lesser rice. :) Any comment?

where is this article?
Is there a link?

I guess it depends on your age and how active you are.
Overall eating in moderation is the key to healthy life.

Mix your white rice with unpolished brown rice. Brown rice is dry and you need more water to cook this mixture. Helps to soak the brown rice for a couple of hours before that.

Healthier since brown rice has fibre and the nutrients has not been polished away. You can start by using 1:3 ratio and start increasing the brown rice portion as you and your family get used to it.

The rice will not be as white and fluffy. We have been doing this for bout 3 years now and the kids are used to it. They will add soup to the rice which is a good thing too.

Another things that you can add to your rice is barley.

All these fills you up (since some of us cannot do without rice) and are more nutritious than white rice.

Hope this helps.

I agree with Wan Wan. Eat in moderation. Certain white rice is high in glycemic index. G.I. is a measure of the effects of carbs on your blood glucose levels. Carbs in white rice will break down rapidly thus releasing glucose into your bloodstream rapidly, therefore it's high g.i. While we need carbs for energy and if white rice is a must, depends on your age, health background, etc, the portion should be moderate and suitable. Otherwise, like pointed out, whole wheat products like brown rice or basmati rice are medium g.i. food. Pasta is low g.i. food hence it's a good choice. Athletes on carbo loading phase before competition. Some go on the mentality that in order to save cost and satisfy his/her hunger, having lots of rice is the answer. However, the better way is to eat a balanced diet and if still hungry, munch on fruits or vege.

Will try & find that article.
Wanted to check and see if it is about just about white polished rice or all types of rice.

ProCol - Thanks for a very informative insight to grains, G.I. and diets.

If I remembered correctly... the article did mention that all types of rice although brown rice and unpolished rice has higher fiber compared to white polished rice... the calories still the same. If you want, I can try to scan the article.. maybe you can PM me your email address. I know that I cannot scan and paste the article here. I will get banana from one-eyed moderator!

I Pasta is low g.i. food hence it's a good choice.
Does this refer to any type of pasta? Fresh? Dried and sold in packs?

hmm...i think there are very little truth in that. A lot of magazines or website actually gives the wrong info, their credential is very important.

1) yes, rich is calorie dense but depending on what kind of rice, they do actually contains fibers.
2) very true..:(
3) wrong. Rice is one of the MAIN carbohydrates group that we consume. It is definitely digestible. Insoluble fibers is indigestible, but soluble fiber is digestible.
4) No. Rice is not sugar, rice is starch, a complex polysaccharides. Although eventually starch will break down to sugar, it will not spike up your blood glucose level in an hour. If that's the case, everyone will be eating chocolate for lunch instead of rice.. :D
5) No. There is no scientific evidence to prove the correlation between rice and water.
6)No, rice doesn't do that. Fiber does that. Fiber is also a complex carbo just like rice but they are different. Fiber is non energy yielding and it interferes with nutrients absorption only if it is consumed in excess.

hope that helps! :)

Another things that you can add to your rice is barley.

One Taiwanese medical practitioner (sing seh) told me to replace rice with barley, or for a start add barley into my rice and gradually cut down the rice, as it helps to reduce water retention. I haven't try it yet but wonder if anyone has tried it? And does it work?

hm..well, maybe because carbohydrates like rice contribute to 60% of our daily energy intake. You could cut down on rice but increase more protein as protein is the third largest contribute to energy yielding, 20% and they're healthier.

But generally, if u wanna lose weight, your energy expenditure must be more than energy intake, meaning if your daily requirement is 2000 Kcal, you should burn more Kcal than that....

To loose one pound of fat, you need to burn 3500 Kcal!
:(

For me, too much rice is no good for me. Basically, I try to cut down to one rice meal a day... to a small bowl. :)

Folks!..EAT LESS RICE, maybe just ONCE a day?... why?.. not only its good for you but the gahmen and the wholesalers took the rakyat for a ride by controlling and mucking around with the price of rice. They'll continue to do so till we give this gahmen the boot! The price of good rice have reached a ridiculous level. BTW, there's a subsidised 10kg pack of rice by Bernas. Guess who's buying most by the bags..foreign labor and the restaurants..
