SCIENTISTS about to conduct one of the world's biggest physics experiments tomorrow (Wednesday) have received death threats amidst fears they could destroy the world.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), a giant particle accelerator built by European science organisation CERN, will start its atom-smashing activities tomorrow in an experiment it is hoped will uncover some of the secrets of the Big Bang.
Despite the expected scientific benefits, some fear the experiment could create black holes that will eventually swallow the Earth. German chemist Professor Otto Rossler even led a last-ditch legal attempt to stop the experiment......

So what if they destroyed the world when the black holes consumes everything?
Anyway there won't be earth anymore... no more usj.com.my, no more UmNazi, no more you and me, NOTHING!!
So what to worry about? :D

I worry not able to see my shares go up :D Then before we all 'go', we must go have fun, get ourselves surrounded by alcohol and women :p hahaha!

better still, you won't be able to see your shares go down :D
let's have a TT session in d black holes then ;)

Has anyone had read Dan Brown's "Angels and Demons" ?
In that story, it was about another CERN experiment where they had isolated anti-matter in magnetic glass containers. Once the anti-matter collided with matter, that would be the end of the world. A very similar scenario that is probably happening at CERN tomorrow .. that is if they manage to elucidate anti-matter in their experiments.
By the way Dan Brown (of the Da Vinci code fame) wrote fiction with some link to probable facts.
If the world is destroyed tomorrow, you'd probably not feel it because we all go in one single bang. Goodbye, it had been nice knowing you all ....

The thing that surprise me is how come this project is even being approved. The consequences can be irreversible and the prophecy MAN creates the world and MAN destroys the world is true.

Sorry to disappoint you... me 110% real man :D
alcohol and women doesn't mix well with marriage :D
anyway, I remember I read about the CERN project somewhere, theoretically if they really indeed created a tiny black hole, theoretically they will be able to contain it somehow by pulling the plug since it's so tiny.
And theoretically the worst case scenario will be they won't be able to contain the black hole, and theoretically the tiny black hole will grow bigger at a very slow rate at first, but will grow bigger in exponent ratio
So theoretically if they created a black hole, we won't be going out in a single bang, but slowly got consumed by the black hole :p
theoretically lar!! :D

... aaahhh, but in the Dan Brown novel, this antimatter (or God Particle?) would in fact become an incredible source of pure energy if it can be contained and managed. In view of the energy crisis, they may discover the world's future fuel source, like keeping the Sun in a container to generate electricity.
But of course all are in theory and appears in his novel as fiction. We will know tomorrow. By the way, that CERN accelerator is actually deep underground to protect it from being contaminated by high speed particles emitted by the Sun. If they actually created an explosion, it would be contained underground. However, if they do isolate anti-matter and fumbles, they could indeed destroy the world.
Somehow I have this nagging memory of the Millenium Bug - there was world-wide panic but it passed by with only a small fizzle... :D

Sometimes i just wish they know what they are doing...
Rest assured they are!
Similar events happen a zillion times every second. The only difference is that in CERN they isolate it so that it can be observed.

Read what I said above. It would be complete paranoia not to approve it.

Isa is right - antimatter and a host of other unimaginable nuclear particles occur naturally. They have only fleeting lifespans and thus are never observed. The CERN experiment is to record evidences of their existence using a lot of mathematics and physics theory. No one would actually "see" the particles, much less contain and "hold" them. So, you see the difference between fiction and scientific fact?

Let's keep our fingers crossed. Anything can happen after March 8th so let's observe.
I remember my father telling me about this facility and experiment they were building when I was only 14 or 15. That's over 20 years ago. I don't know if he was referring to this one but he mentioned that they're building a super collider. That's what I remember. I think this is the super collider.

First the they built the LHC, wonder what they going to do next? Built a Bermuda Triangle for experiment? There's no guarantee whether it's safe or not?

The experiment will start at about 3pm today.
Anyone has idea if the small black hole were to be created during the experiment, how long will it take to grow big enough to swallow USJ ? :(

Well, a few presints at least...not the whole community :D
When Samuel F.B. Morse sent the first telegraph message, it was "what hath God wrought?" He was afraid that the telegraph would cause trouble for the world. Rutherford and the others working on the Manhattan project feared what nuclear energy would bring to the world...we're still here tho and the nuclear threat is quite different.....
So this may be nothing .... but if it is something ... c'est la vie

Not so fast, according to the BBC report (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7604293.stm) they are now trying to send a packet of protons flying the full circle (which they hadn't succeeded yet) - once the protons can be "captured" on this circular path, then they will be accelerated to collide with another stream moving in the opposite direction - and the collision comes later, not today.

This article (http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5g5nGPtmoUVIJDgehVJ_snD6vDA6gD933NKUG0) by the Associated Press indicated that the protons have been fired. Background information in that article will give you an idea what they are going to do if they succeed with their "slow run" today. The collision may not happen just yet - they are working towards it. So, start breathing again till they plan the real bang.

If the experiment can wipe out human kind, why the go ahead? Why and what the hell for?! Always the case of 'sek pau fan mo yeh cho'(cantonese) or 'ciak pah sioh eng' (hokkien)..both meaning 'for want of a better thing to do'. I supposed some irrelevant people (to us..me at least) will enjoy some moments of glory if it proves whatever it is supposed to prove. Sorry, I was hopeless in Physics at school. :o You guys are so cool discussing atoms, protons, collisions, anti matters, elements, black holes etc. Am in some very learned company. :p So this threat is still hanging over our heads..anyone knows what time frame when it's gonna be done?

dunno about them guys spending 4 billion Swiss francs for colliding protons... we have 'em here in malaysia - PROTONS colliding every day... everywhere... with smashing results !!! :p kihkihkih!

Take a step back and look at the big picture, from Manhattan project to Nuc Power to Radiology (need i say more?) this is the progression of Science. All this discoveries cost trillions if added up together but a leap of faith into the unknown of Science based solely on theories have brought us out of the stone age, time is the only factor in developing it into infinite possibilities. Most of us can only see 7 Bil as a present problem, Scientist see future potential, while most of us are blind sided by ingnorance.
Disclaimer:
You can correct me, if after a big bang does occur and we a blown of the galaxy.
Nice knowing you all.

everybody has different view on life. for some people like scientists perhaps it is most worthwhile to find out the answer of the the origin of life. they may think life is meaningless to live without kowning the answer and the quest makes their existence meaningful.
btw is there any known published time table for this experiment ?

Just read about the latest progress : the collision will start in weeks time. And it takes a year to accelerate the protons to light speed. It means the black hole may only be created after 1 year..

For those of you (who are like me :o ), and don't know what's happening here, you can watch this SBS Australia documentary called 'The God Particle' released on the 10th Sept.08
CLICK HERE TO WATCH 'THE GOD PARTICLE' (http://video.sbs.com.au/player/news/index.php?mmid=21828&chid=13)
The link will lead you to a recent documentary on Anwar as well. Just click on the 'God Particle' to view. After that watch the discussion on the Fannie Mae and Ferddie Mac - interesting.
Yow need Broadband To Watch.

Alamak I think those who feel lost or threathen by this post, please do not. This post belongs to those freaking nerdy mathematical wizards, ha ha :)
Why do you dont have to worry? Cause it wont buy you bread and butter! It normally takes about 30 years for pure research to translate into a usable technology research and then perhaps another 10 years for an engineering spinoff to reach the ah gu ah kow ah beng in the street. By that time its your children or grandchildren problem, not yours ha ha :)
But if you want to impress your girlfriend, just explain it this way. A group of particle physicists (who the hell are they, just say they are the most bestest smartest scientists who are studying the smallest or most basic things or forces in the universe) everyday nothing better to do but studies these particles in their head using all kind of experiments and most bestest powerfulest mathematics. After 100 years (agak agak lah) study wah they so happy compile one GUT (grand unify theory) and thought they have answer to every damn things in the universe (but I dont know why they have no answer to how I can strike TOTO lah). But suddenly realise how can they be sure they are right? So they dream of a MOTHER OF ALL EXPERIMENT to verify their theory or even modify it by crashing one particle with another particles. So the big bang machine was born lah. Now you know why they called it big bang cause they bang all these particles together..... :p
