I m writing this from Shanghai.

To warn those who come here, alone, for the 1st time or even after several times, the danger you may expose yourself to, unknowingly.

Shanghai, in general is a safe city. But, like many big cities, you have always the bad guys lurking.

#1. Young girls, dress up beautiful, operate in pair, approach you on the street, looked lost, pretending to ask you for direction. After the initial "where is this place?" kind of innocent talk, they act friendly and start to chat you up. They usually ask you to join them to go around the city and then go for a drink nearby.

Half way, one of the girl would excuse herself and goes off.

Now, left alone with you, the pretty and innocent looking young thing advances. The real show starts here. If you begin to think you have picked up a nice looking chick on the street and looking forwards to a wonderful one-night-stand, you are dead man! You may either end up photographed naked and pay a ransom for your advanture or the girl husband or father suddenly show up and you have to settle with him!

#2. Respectable looking, well dressed middle aged woman. Come by and start telling you she have good looking office girls and students, good service, clean but now hard to find job or need money to pay for school fees. If you need, the girl can even double up as your tour escot without additional fees. All you got to pay is so little, no more than a massage. Don't touch that, you may end up lossing your passport, these girls are professional pick pocket!

#3. Taxi. Never take the illegal one or just anyone that stops buy when you wave for one. The driver will take you in and two blocks down, he asks you to allow him to pick up a young girl whom he knows. She gets in and says to you she needs to change clothe before she gets down. And she does just that before you. Even ask you to help out in the back seat. The taxi guy will than ask you politely where you want to go and that you can take her with you after having a free preview, would you refuse the offer?

#4. Credit card. When you swipe your card, check the amount. 100 can become 1000 if you are not careful!!!!

This is Shanghai, a city of the siners!

That is not a fair picture of 上海 Shanghai that I stayed to work in 2006. What you described can also happen in KL or even JB. Its not just Shanghai, its even in Ho Chin Minh City or Manila or Bangkok...

Just go down to a restaurant downtown in old part of Shanghai (Puxi) at 454 Fahuazhen Road and drop in at Raintree Cafe and enjoy Malaysian nasi lemak if you miss it. Its near to Huaihai and Nanjing Rd so you shouldn't miss it. Look for Nick, everything should be okay.

Enjoy Shanghai man, don't worry about it and don't let the opportunity to pass!

sooooo unfair lah.

Samo samo in KL, Hatyai, Bangkok, Jakarta, Medan, manila, hanoi, hkong, taipeh, tokyo, Rio D J, Joberg, London, rome, berlin, stutgatt, sdyney...heck! the world over lah!

Best approach is, when u'r overseas and a stranger approach u...
" hello, Do you speak english?/mandarin?/swahili?/italian?/thai?etctect.."

U better off speaking Hokkien or kelate to them...they get exasperated and know that u cannot be had...

People...what is so unfair?

uchangeng is only giving his advice and more so, as what he said is coming from Shanghai itself, so give him some space. At the very least, we should thank him for his tips as this will at least make as aware of this ruse that some unscrupulous people will go, to get at us unsuspecting visitors to the place.

Anyone are free to comment and give these tips, even here in M'sia to visitors to our country if they think they are useful.

I always look at the "what to beware" section on travel blogs/forums whenever I am traveling to a unfamiliar place as I would at least kinda know what to expect rather than going blind and think everything is honky dory.

haiya... why tok kok about shanghai... any visitor kambing to Kolompo oso must face the dangers of the taxi touts at KLIA lorrr... what suprises me is the stoopid people in charge of the airport keeps saying their hands are tied... dunno how to keep these unsavory people out of the terminal... hoi!! what is the stoopid cctv for... monitor them and NABBED the buggers when they walk out of the terminal with the arrivees..

 ministry of tourism shud also liase with JPJ and police to ensure safety of tourist arriving - not sibuk sibuk make promo videos by cronies and proxies... don't wait till a tourist or visitor is KILLED and/or ROBBED, gets highlighted in media and then all your multi million ringgit campaigns will go down the drain...after country is painted as a NO GO area...

I just feel that to call 上海SHANGHAI "a city of sinners" is a bit over-stretched. It is the same for KL... go walk in the city and see if you do not get the same things that unchangeng described....

well, at least we all know the said above are illegal. It's still better compared with "some people", right? like to sleep, and give empty promisses, some even fried beautiful women with military-use bomb.

Penang also same lah. Those days you if you go to Kek Lok Si , you will find men asking you to guess the coin in amongst the three bowls. First their accomplices will guess it right to attract you.....

Petaling Jaya- Latest ;- Middle aged China woman will flag you down at the pretext of direction and when you respond, they will cope up with a sob story...

Genting Highlands:- When you are on roll, a young sweet China girl will lure you for a one night stand. When she stripped and you respond, you are drugged, Only to discover all your monies are gone.

These are temptations and if you think for one minute , you have landed an opportunity, you kena lah.

Take the law of average, you cannot be wrong.
