What's the big deal? Do you know what the canteen at my office charge for lunch? I have rice, one veg (eg kangkong or cabbage) and a fried ikan keli = RM3.50. If I take rice and 2 vege, that come to RM2.80 - get all the roughage and healthy as well. The mamak stall nearby also charges the same if you picked similar types of dishes and his papadam are free. Furthermore, you can have all the dangerous curry sauce to drown your rice at no extra charge. The environment is no fancy place but hey, food to keep the stomach happy, not to impress the girlfriend.

So where's the big deal? My lunch is as simple as it gets and not even RM5 !!

same here. luckily the staff all get rm150 allocation per month to subsidise. too bad that rm150 is a taxable benefit. :(

Is not a big deal but how many people are paying like chang is paying nowaday? As I say, this wat I can do to reduce the burden of public. We still profit from there but much lesser.... If u can ate at canteen and pay RM 3.50 than congratulation to you but remember not many people pay wat u r paying... Furthermore we r offeing a decent meal with a drink or dessert which normally will cost RM6.50 - RM 8.00... Thanks

Klubstir, sorry man, not meant to say you are over priced. Eating lunch for RM10 in the Klang Valley means the patrons are willing to pay not just for the food, there is the air-conditioning, service, and ambience factors which people gladly pay for.

But since you said "budget meal" in the thread title, I had to put reality back to the arguement.

By the way, if you were to prepare your own sandwiches for lunch, great savings are in store. However, you then lose out with the socialising and networking that comes with a power lunch or even an "under-powered" lunch at the mamak stall. ;) :D

If you ever stop at kerinchi LRT, exit the station , go the end of the mall, towards the toilet. Passing many Malay eateries. Thats in KL summore.

The chinese non halal lunch is no more than RM5 with 1 veggie + some meat, chinese tea & free soup :D That my lunch most of the time.

If you take one dulang of rice and veggie, sure cannot lar :D

Budget (and halal) food is available at behind USJ 8 Metro bus depo warong2..that is if anyone are not entirely fussy about the food there. Chinese food stalls around here are obviously more expensive and raise prices at the slightest excuse. Blardi profiteers!

My regular dose of Fish Bee Hoon is RM5.50. Plus a glass of Kat Chai Shin Mui juice (Lime & pickled olive?) that comes at RM2.00. Sum up that would be RM7.50. Sometimes add a slice of papaya RM1.00. Thus lunch would cost me RM8.50.

So?..should I think RM4-5 including a drink (tea or coffee) should be considered "budget" and anything more coughed out is expensive. Rm3.50 including drink is considered cheap?

i pay around RM3 for small rice + 3 veggies at KL, my company canteen... :D
Other eateries charge RM3.50 to RM4 for the same. Sometimes, for those who simply charge expensively, i complained straight to his/her face when collecting money and never return to that place..

Yes, I feel every consumer SHOULD say it straight if it were expensive, but must be justified lah, say Nasi campur worth RM3.50 now charged at RM6 or more at roadside or just a normal coffeeshop. And do make it a point to say, won't come back again and tell all your own friends to do likewise. Let them cringe and squirm, otherwise they don't realize any customer dissatisfaction and carryon business as usual.

My company cafe charges Rm2.50 for rice+vege+meat/fish & endless free coffee & chinese tea.. one problem though.. menu is the same all year round, so after a while become 'muak' already.

Once, the Teow Chew Porridge shop at SS14 charged me $6 for a small Kempong fish. I was too speechless to complaint. The mix-rice fella only charge $2 per fish!! I do not care even if they used a fishing rod to catch that fish as I have never gone back there again.

Nowadays I prefer to tau pau home my food, make my own coffee and eat in peace. I am also going to the road side nasi lemak stall more and more. Yesterday, the SS13 pak chik charged me $2.50 for a nasi lemak with beef and the usual stuff. Good price. I got rice and beef for $2.50 wherelse for $4.00 I can only get wanton mee plus some slices of pork.

At the end of the day, if we look hard enough, there are good deals here and there especially those operating from home. We should patronise those stalls and give them some business. At SS19, outside McDonald, there is a small girl that sells home-make bak chang for $1.80, $2.20 and $3.00 (only Wed, Sat and Sun.) The $3 bak chang is as good as the Sea Park's $4.50 bak chang - in my opinion. It has egg yoke, mushrooms, pork, dried shrimp. We should help home sellers like them instead of those professional profiteers.

d worse is dat some chicken/bbq meat/roast meat rice stalls in coffeeshops take it as an excuse to raise their prices. they say that because d price of rice has increased (as in each packet of uncooked rice), so they havta increase their price, but they increase d price of each plate chicken rice by 50 sen.... can u imagine how many plates of rice they can produce from dat packet of uncooked rice? so in d end, they profit in excess (a few hundred percent!!) of d actual price increase of rice....

This morning we were charged RM2.70 for a pack of plain nasi lemak (with sambal, ikan bilis, telur rebus, timun & rice). Usual price was RM2.00 only!! What a preposterous 30% price increase!! We decide to stop buying from this roadside stall in USJ9.

To come to think of it, the price of NL these days is actually just too high and overrated. Same with mamak rojak thats now somewhere at RM3.80/plate. Not too long ago it was RM3.50.
How can a plate of rojak or nasi lemak with NO MEAT cost near to a plate of rice with 1 chicken and 1 vege at average RM4.50?. Its getting unreal and SILLY!...but Malaysian mindset is such.. EAT first, regret about how you got samuraied much later. Food vendors, even roadside ones are now opportunists and predators. As long as you insist buying from them at their price and without a fuss, YOU WILL ALWAYS remain the victim!.. :)

I now ask price before ordering!. If I feel its unreasonably raised, I WALK OUT!..I don't care if the shop sneers at me or not. MY MONEY to spend mah!

Try the one at SS13 flat. If you are at Jln Kewajipan going to Summit, near the roundabout, turn left and left. He is always there under the big umbrella. That pak chik is talkative though. I like his petai sambal (generous portion), cockles (big ones) and sotong. If you take any 2 of these, it is only $3.00 (half rice otherwise it is $3.50 but his rice portion is huge.)

I as a restaurant operator do feel the effect from rising raw material but for me why raise RM 0.20 each plate or each serving when the supplier increase RM 1.00 for each kg of chicken meat where with 1 kg chicken we can serve few plate.. I rather keep customer happy rather than increase the price as by using an excuse that everythg gone up....

There is a shop called Jojo near to Puteri Mart, where they serve choice of 3 dishes (1meat, 1veg and 1 egg/tofu), free soup and free rice. Very much home cook style, simple meal. RM19.90 can feed 2-4 pax easily.
