Slimming Centre in Taipan. Beware!!!!!

My wife was lured, by sweet talking well dressed promoters, into signing up with a Slimming Center in Taipan for a 5-time slimming course, at a whopping cost of RM1xxx.

After paying the amount, she was asked to introduced friends to the slimming center for a freebies. My wife did. Naturally, freebies!!!!

One month later, things started to go wrong. After comparing the service she get for the money she paid to that of what her friend get, she noticed there was a serious disparity. In another word, my wife realized that things were not as promised. Feeling unjust, she raised her doubt with the Slimming Center. The once nice promoters turned ugly and what happen is not a nice thing to repeat here. May be I should go to Michael Chong instead!

If you are offered a deal too good to be true in any slimming center in Taipan or in anywhere, please don't take their promise on par or on face value. Read between their lips. These are professional conmen. Unethical business people. Your hard earn money can be put to better use somewhere else with better value.

All you want is a fair deal, not a big deal, not even a great deal, just a plain fair deal. And the chances are, with these people, you will never get one!

I have to tell you, I am very against paying in advance just to get some discount. It's more than likely a scam. Slimming centers has been running these for years. Once you sign up, you'll have plenty of problems getting appointments. Fitness clubs, same situation. They sign up more members than they can cater to and it's your problem trying to squeeze in after.
I can name more businesses plying the tactics. The list goes on and on and on.

my sympathy to you and your wife. Many lady folk would pay to stay beautiful and it is this reason why some are out to con women.

Hope justice would be served.

So, we have to be careful out there.

No point joining them...found out too late a few years ago. :o It is don't eat this, don't eat that, only can eat this or that in miniscule portion and a whole load of other crap advise. You end up losing some weight cos you did not eat this or that and not because of the treatment you receive which is mainly just slattering some cream on you, wrapping you up in cling wrap and steaming you in hot termal blanket...you end up losing WATER!

On top of that they try to sell you more things/treatments which will presumeably help you lose weight faster while you are all wrapped up tightly like a mummy from neck down and cannot run away from their hard sell. Towards the end of the series of treatment, they even tried to sell me slimming products to be taken orally.

These people are just making a living. Dont get me wrong as I am also totally against it. So it is up to us to be smart. Always remember.....

Rule No. 1 : THERE IS NO FREE LUNCH. (Even if a fren calls u up one fine day & wanted to buy you lunch...hmmm must be either selling insurance, unit trust, direct selling etc....)
Rule No. 2 : IT IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. MUST BE A CATCH SOMEWHERE(indeed there is...you'll find out when its too late)
Rule No. 3 : THERE MUST BE SOME FINE PRINT SOMEWHERE(which normally not even printed on the whatever you are reading)

Remember these rules and you should be OK. :D

eh, the free lunch rule not accurate lar. People suddenly call up to buy me lunch all the time but no hidden agenda also. Maybe I'm good company? :P (and you're so sad. People buy you lunch only because they want to sell you something. Okay, okay, I'm kidding. Don't get angry ya)

As for the scam, be like me. No credit card, hardly carry much cash. These people want you to pay on the spot, but I can't. So I tell them I'll know where to go when I decide to. Thank you very much.

Four months ago, in Dec 2007. One Chinese run Hair Treatment Center in Taipan folded. People who had already prepaid thousands for the "course" were asked to go to their other branch in Mid-Valley.

One of the victim was my friend who later found that the other so-called "branch" was actually another franchisee. Little can be done about recovering his money and he had a hard time getting the service he had prepaid in the folded Taipan branch. Big huh hah ensued and he was finally given a token refund, which in his word, better than nothing!!!!

earlier I said about women wanting to look pretty.

I also forgot that men (especially those botak and botak-ing ones) also would want to look handsome. So, some of them are willing to part with their money to look good. hmmm.... I shall get a hair style like Samy's :)

There is no shortcut to slimming. It requires hard work (sensible exercise and diet) to lose those kgs. Believe me I worked at it and lost 5 kg over a year just by sensible exercise and diet. No crash courses or slimming centres for me.

Just came back from Siem Riep in Cambodia. No fat people there. So I suggest those who want to lose weight to move there. Darfur in Sudan is even better but too far away.

Chin Wan, many in USK.com.my are chicken **** to spell out the name of recalcitrant operators/retailers/service providers etc lah...
This is not the first posting nor the past where the poster refuses to name the shop but magnanimously shared his/her supposedly 'misery' lah...maybe there is 2 side to a story..any story.

Me? I always name the con-man/shop/whoever...whats there to be afraid, if it was the truth...else shaddup! I am not afraid...I also have an army to back me up hahahahahah!

Lost 5 kg in a year compare to those slimming centre promised lost 5 kg in a month. We really very hard to convince others to exercise so hard and diet for such a long period. Besides that, women wan to use the easy way out always. That is why slimming centre is their choice.

All you ppl who has been cheated, pls know your rights and fight for it !!

Take the following steps:

The first prudent thing to do is go to slimming center and talk to the manager in charge (no point scolding the sale girl who doesnt even understand what you are complaining abt) and "reason" to him/her your dismay and ask for a refund - try not to raise your voice ~ (though it's hard to do...)

Failing which, tell him/her that you are going to write-in for a formal complaint and if no refund/retreat is given within x days - you will lodge this complaint to Consumer Bureau of Selangor (yes, each state there is one) and/OR reserve the right to bring this matter to the small claim court (for claims less than RM5K).

If still no recourse, send in your compliant letter and wait for response for next 14 days

If still no action - it's time for you to really go to the Consumer Bureau to lodge a report or file a small claim suit against the slimming center and send evidence of the report/suit to the slimming centre...

Usually at this stage, they will call you to resolve the matter for fear of bad publicity.... if not, it's either (1) they are ready to fight till the end (and stupid coz will tarnish their biz ) or (2) they dont know what u r doing...so up to you whether to pursue further.....

hv tried it and it works 99%...

I think, the first step proposed by Rachel will work, depending how or the way you talk to them, so call, negociation power that you have.

I did once to a tyre shop, who refuse to replace my car baterry for which is 'kong' after only one month old.

What i said to him "Fine,.......... don't talk sh*t to me, if you don't replace it for me now (which i have a valid warranty card), i will ensure (tru legal action) you will bare all cost inccur by me, if my car breakdown some where in town, and i will make FREE advertisment for you tru internet."

There is also a case involving my wife's staff. She was convinced into joining a gym through a promotion, usually sweet slim promoters. She pays by credit card and signed a contract for monthly deductions.

After 2 months, she discovered that she was pregnant and informed the gym to terminate his membership, which was earlier promised that you can stop anytime and payment will be stopped.

Unfortunately that was not the case, months later, the bank still deduct despite written advice, citing the contract she have signed. Ultimately, she have to closed the account of the bank and credit card to stop the rot. So if you are in this same mess, closed your account immediately and do not listen to explanation.

As what P.C. Yeoh have mentioned, a sucker is born everyday. Spend within your means, do not commit to advance payment and instalment by credit card. Not many have the discipline to commit. "A bird in hand is worth two, three, or four in the bush"

Yes it's true..this thingy abt making deduction through credit card...i find it rather bizarre as being the cardholder I was the one who gave instruction to my bank to allow the direct debit, but i once encountered problem of getting the bank listening to me to stop paying the merchant (it was a insurance co then)...

Hulo - what happen to the bankers-clients relationship ? as a bank - it owes fiduiciary duty to its customers and should take instruction from its customer but not any third party ...so angry, wrote a letter to the bank's legal dept to complain abt this and cc that to BNM.

p/s - the proper way (yes, it is a procedure set by BNM) to lodge a complain to a bank is always talk to the customer service; if no recourse - write in your complaint addressed to the bank's legal dept and cc that letter to BNM
