How true is this any one?!

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM
recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed
in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the
robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

btw, this is a very good proposal to bring forward to the banks. but the implementation may be tough as our police is sometimes not up to the mark.

as for pin which is the same backwards, the bank can reject such pin and ask you to enter a new pin.

but what if you entered the pin backwards and it mention that is a wrong pin number....

IMO, the best way is still enter the pin number wrongly and make the machine to detained your card. then stay in the atm area as atm have cctv...

if you enter the wrong pin and the machine takes your card, you are likely to be hurt or killed by the robbers.

so, the suggestion to enter the pin backwards is a good idea. the robber gets the money. so he thinks it is OK but minutes later, gets arrested while you are a safe distance away. every ATM machine has a CCTV btw...

It would be nice if our ATM have this intelligent feature, I mean not exactly the same way as mentioned that just reverse the pin, but allow user to setup a secondary pin number that use for this purpose. Still, I won't hope (and trust) the ATM to help me contact police once I entered the emergency secondary pin number, instead I wish it to act normally but show only RM10 balance in my account.

Lets not compare something seen on TV Land and it can be emulated here in Malaysia. Not everything seen or heard can be done here. I can bet even if there's a Pondok Polis nearby, the robbers would fly away faster than the cops come to your rescue.
Banks here ain't bothered with much customer security. They make money from YOUR money...thats it. 3 days ago I went to replace ATM card and officer could tell me straight in the eye..Nothing is free!.

Last weekend, all the ATM machines at Maybank Section 15 Shah Alam was either "NO SERVICE" or no cash to dispense. It was only Saturday afternoon and I called the hotline, the line ain't that hot, no one picked up the line except :

"Untuk Bahasa Malaysia tekan 1, untuk Bahasa Inggeris, tekan 2, untuk Kad Kredit tekan 3, untuk kad ATM tekan 4" dll I hate all these unfriendly stuff...!

Do they care if these ATM machines are topped up before they leave for their weekend break? I don't think so, nobody cares if you are out of cash or not. Nobody in the bank cares for the little man on the street, really.

Hi, no offense, but just to clear up some misconception here. Not going in defense for any banks, just to let u guys know.

As I've worked in a retail banking before, I do know some of the rules applied here.

The ATM card charges were imposed by BNM, not the banks itself. Therefore, you can't really blame the banks.

On another note, the term "they make money from your money" is not exactly true? They make money by lending u money from other ppl's money which they pay interest to. So basically, they borrow money from A, lend it to B, earn interest fr B and pay partial of that interest to A. The more money they lend out to, the more money they make.

If u buy shares e.g. Maybank / PBB, then ur actually making money from them.

A bit insolent of me but I just think that we need to "calm down" on issues like this and don't let things fly off the handle. If security issues and such really bothers you, you as the consumer has the right to make a choice. Go to other banks. Customer service not good enough? Bring ur money elsewhere.

Don't get me wrong, I don't like my bank either, but don't gripe about it and be more proactive in bringing the issues to their customer relations office (each bank has one). Changes might not be immediate, but it will make an impact if each and everyone of us do that instead of griping in forums only.
