Not only child prodigies. Many highly intelligent people fall on the wayside. I am not sure if there is a study on this but I remember reading an article written by a psychologist some years ago that it has partly to do with the fact that they are living in a world of their own. I don't mean dreaming. I mean they are "not the same" as most of us in that they don't follow our trend of thoughts and actions and so on.

there was another child prodigy in seremban that came out in the msm where the proud parents were seeking assistance to further his studies and after some years...another press report that mentioned his untimely death...reasons of death is not known...again another sad tragedy...is it too stressful to be a prodigy ? High expectation from parents/sponsors?..loss of childhood like catching spiders/computer games which normal kids go thru' ?? Is there a way the child prodigy can live a normal live and not to people expectation ??

All of us 'normal' beings live to other people's expectations (for example, at work, we kill ourselves living to the expectations of our bosses) but for the prodigy or genius, I guess it is even more damning. I knew a genius when I was at university. He told me that it was as if demons were chasing him constantly.

Don't mean to be pedantic ... but Sufiah is not a Malaysian. Her mum left for the UK in the 60's and anyway, Malaysian law does not confer birthright on a child borned to a Malaysian mum outside of Malaysian soil, if the father is non-Malaysian. I found it mighty strange when Sufiah hit the limelight for her entrance to St. Hilda's that Malaysian press insisted on putting her on the pedestal as a Malaysian prodigy.

Sufiah is no child now. She must be 23 or 24 years of age. It is sad to see any young lady resorting to the world's oldest profession. Prima facie, I don't buy the story that she is doing it to "pay her rent". 130 quid is waaaaaaaaaay above Britain's minimum wage for sustainable living ! I just pray that it is not the case that she has sucumbed to something more sinister - e.g. heroin is known to be a reason why many middle-class girls in the UK fall into the prostituition trap.

Bear in mind that despite of all the hype surrounding her entrance into Oxford, she never did finish her degree and if the Oxford press were to be believed, the best job available to her then (minus the degree) was that of an admin clerk in a construction company.

Just my 2 pence ... I hope she is not heading for the Priory after being exposed - Faria Alam did just that when she was exposed by News Of The World ...

Here are some sad "Where Are The Child Prodigies Now" updates, taken from a UK press report a few years ago :

PERILS FACED BY A PRODIGY

MATHS genius Ruth Lawrence entered Oxford to study at 12 and had become a professor by 19.

She had been tutored at home in Huddersfield by her father Harry and played down the fact that, in 1985, she was the youngest Briton to have earned a first-class degree.

In 1998, she quit Britain and set tled in Israel. She's now 34, an orthodox Jew and married with two children - who, she says, she wants to grow up normally.

HOME-schooled by her parents, Sufiah Yusof gained a place to read maths at Oxford when at 13.

But after her third-year exams, in 2000, Sufiah, of Coventry, fled and sent an email to her dad, accusing him of subjecting her to "15 years of abuse".

Sufiah worked in a seaside hotel before returning to Oxford. But she didn't complete her course after falling for trainee lawyer Jonathan Marshall. The couple married in 2004 and Sufiah is now said to be an admin assistant.

PRECOCIOUS whizz kid James Harries had his own antiques business by the age of 10 and, at 14, wrote a book called Rags To Riches.

But posh James, born in 1978 and now based in Cardif f, was bullied, his family business failed and, in 1991, his dad was jailed for arson and fraud.

James attempted suicide before having a sex change in 2001 to become Lauren. She has since found limited success as a TV presenter.

YOUNG William Sidis passed an anatomy exam at Harvard aged eight and, at nine, knew a dozen languages.

Two years on, the New Yorker, born in 1898, was lecturing and already claiming that he'd become the greatest mathematician of the 20th century.

But as an adult, the pressure caused a nervous breakdown and Sidis disappeared from public life, doing a series of menial jobs. He died of a brain haemorrhage in 1944.

BALAMURALI Ambati was just 17 when he entered the Guinness Book of Records as the world's youngest doctor, after qualif ying from medical school in New York in 1995. Four years before that he'd graduated with a biology degree.

Now 29, he practises clinical ophthalmology at the Me dic al College of Georgia, and volunteers in the third world, performing eye surgery. He has also written a book on Aids with his older brother.

Sufiah Yusof, the child Maths genius at 13, has been found to be working as a prostitute.
She was reported to have entertained an undercover reporter in her flat in Manchester.

somehow, that kinda proves wot my dad used to tell me when i was a kid when i asked him about the geniuses/whiz kids... he says everyone can get a place into uni at 10 if they only learned one subject... and give up everything (including having a proper childhood).

it also goes to show that when you deprive a child of their natural growing up process, their development will be flawed... gaining maturity of thought and morals is just not an overnight thing. parents who force their children to study study study and never play should reconsider their approach.

Again, the lack of confidence by our leaders & nation as a whole, saw yet another 'takmalu' attempt to brand any & every 'achievement' as a direct or indirect Malaysian effort!

U think she want helP? Why are we being presumptious here? Are we having a holier than thou attitude?

Prostitution is a legal business in UK. They are professionals who pay their taxes, issue receipts for services rendered, keep ledgers, pay rental/utilities/council bills...Thats helluva more than what many businessmen or politicians do here!

Sufiah is a British citizen, lah. Her old man was from Pakistan, mum from Johor. Guess they are all now British citizens.

Anyway, how to help? Throw her into some sort of 'rehabilitation camp?'

Some of the comments coming from Malaysians on other forums are things like bring her back to Malaysia and take of her needs here.

I think it's a shame to imagine that somehow Malaysians can "save" her but then, for some reason alot of people have this belief that they can "save" people, e.g. prostitutes.

She is an adult and she made her choice. Let her have her privacy. The British government has public services that will help her out of that life if she chooses to get out.

Cheers, m

Our gomen itself needs help too, like Sufiah, our gomen "has strayed from the path". :D

BUT I think what the gomen wants is cheap publicity. There are so many other similiar cases here on home soil. Remember how this Dato and that Dato or Minister's children allegedly involved in criminal activities, drug abuse, even alleged murder, Sri Hartamas was it?

I agree with Moas aka AllUrban - LEAVE HER ALONE TO SORT OUT HER OWN LIFE. She's an adult and she knows her own choices in life, I am sure.

Agreed and i think the less publicity given to this case, the better, starting even from this forum. How is she different from the other women of similar situation overseas and in Msia? Bcoz she got a higher IQ? If an adult chooses to live the life this way, let it be. I would think that only the immeidate family can offer help and advice b4 anyone try to intervene.

ALL URBAN'S statement right on target and well put!
But that won't stop our 'jaguh kampongs'/media from spinning the story for reasons best known to them when there are worst cases prevalent here in 'boleland' but, those do not have the attention of bloggers, politicians and others - does it? :D
I wonder 'who needs the physician and rehabilitation more - our 'jaguh kampongs/media and self righteous politicians or a lass who is a major and responsible legally for 'her actions and ommissions?'
Agreed - let us leave this private! ;)

Ya la, y when someone with malaysian genetic but not malaysian and some even left malaysia after 'pantang' achieve something abroad, our press heboh2 sangat. Malaysia boleh lah, apalah.

For instance, Australian Idol, the Australia environment minister (not even go to secondary school here. and lots more. Why must exaggerate their achievements. Why, no more malaysians with more outstanding success meh?

eventhough sufiah is considered half malay and i'm malay too, the publicity is too much. But however, as a muslim, i really hope and prayed that sufiah will get back to the right track. her childhood life is full of ACADEMIC stress. when hearing and reading news like this, i'm thankful that i'm nor a stupid or too genius student. i refer to that earlier statement to myself, not sufiah. It's normal, just like if one of our friend is off track from their life, we wanted to help them. since we can't, what can we only do is pray. that is what i mean. for my "as a muslim" sentence. Best leave her alone. SHE IS AN ADULT and (even her ex has been reported as saying) SHE HAS CHOSE HER OWN PATH. She has been hounded all her life, by the media, by her parents. Last thing she needs is an uztaz knocking at her door.

before send the uztaz to UK, must have trial run first. Let him "cure" some of our local prostitutes first... if proven effective, then only send. If not, we have to choose another uztaz. Just to make sure the money collected from donation is put into good use.

I sincerely wonder after all that happened - people still want to 'use her!'

Operative word - 'USE'

The UK media did it, the Malaysian Media especially the vernacular ones and bloggers did it, politicians did it, now student groups in the UK do it, and now a religious individual (?), resulting in more media reports, more special interest stories until the inevitable takes place - she commits suicide?

No one bothers about the need for privacy for her UK family - I wonder who really needs help – psychiatric help - all of the above or this young lass?

Quoted from her interview with newsoftheworld mag which can be found on youtube

"People think escorting is sleazy and terrible but I don't see it like that," she says. "I've always had a high sex drive—and now I'm getting all the sex I want—and guys are much better in bed with an escort than a girlfriend.

"I have a nice life and I am in control," she says. "I hate this stereotype society has of escorts being exploited. It is so far from the truth.

i think the self righteous powers that be should just lay off and dun try to "save" this lady.

I do agree with her that as long as the girls in her 'industry' are not "being trafficked or have drug issues", no one should adopt a holier-than-thou as to what the girls have chosen to do.

My 2cents is to leave that poor girl alone. Probably she got her own reasons and its not illegal in some european country to earn an income through special services. Don't condemn her just because she is one. What goes around always comes around. It might happened to your daughter or sister one day. Just think about it.

She is an adult and can make her own decisions. Leave her alone.

nobody here is condeming her... most of us show great admiration of her courage and truthfulness. We are just curious about the actions that our gov is going to take against this British citizen.

They will claim that she is not a Malaysian citizen. Made a mistake, possible denial all the way.
