Oh...err .... lots of it.
And depends from which state.
Some state cheaper than others.
Estimate RM400K for cheapest.
But now current rate change, cos of 8thMar08.

Why on earth would one want to have one? Does it make the person a better person? A more compassionate person? A more caring person?

Not really. In the UK, at least today, the element of award is far higher than the element of prestige. In Malaysia, the element of prestige far outdoes the element of award. In fact what constitutes the 'achievement' is seldom even defined here, whereas in the Queen's list of awards, the reason why OBE, KBE, MBE, knighthood etc are given is clearly declared for everyone to read.

dunno... but seems a datukship from selangor oso now hard to come by.... and oso, easy to 'lose' it ...

actually - dato'ship nowadays overrated la.... if you go to midvalley and thrown a "brick" into the crowd - chances are, you'd probably killed a datuk sneaking out of one of the 'notorious' health spas in the two hotels there... :p

it's all $$ that matters, look at Michelle Yeoh, how much she earns compared to average Malaysians? 1 million means nothing to her as far as USD$ is concerned

I do not think her dato-ship was bought with money.

On April 19, 2001, Yeoh was awarded the Darjah Datuk Paduka Mahkota Perak (DPMP), which carries the title Dato' by Sultan Azlan Shah, the Sultan of Perak, her home state, in recognition of the fame she brought to the state
And which dato can also get Knight of the Legion of Honour of France.

some characteristics I observed about Datuks that I have met: -

1) they are rich
2) they have a minimum of 1 wive :D (some even more than 2 or 3)!!!
3) the Chinese ones like their friends to call them loudly, DATUK so and so e.g. DATUK Firefox. :D
4) they talk loudly
5) they are fat (seldom see one which is as skinny as Tian Chua or Lim Guan Eng)
6) they seem to know how to tell a lot of tall tales (to be fair, there are very few who actually talk facts and are humble)
7) they drive big big cars
8) a lot of them are developers

I do know some businessmen needs the dato-ship as a tool to make more money.
Like you said, buying dato-ship is chicken feed to the million that they have.
Some even go to the extend of buying doctorate!!
So that they feel even honored to be called Dato' Doctor XXX.
BUT I feel pity for anybody who really need emergency medical treatment if these 'DOCTOR' is next to them!
I do know in most countries it is illegal to affix the DR to your name if you are not a MEDICAL DOCTOR.
Here in 'Boleh land'?

We (non-Malaysians) are interested in datuks because 1) there are so darn many of them, and 2) most represent the worst of Malaysia, not the best.

I know about 20 datuks but can only think of 3 who are decent people. And only 1 would be in the running for a UK knighthood.

I know how to get a Datuk's Hip and I know how to get Datuk's Ship but to get a Datukship, I really have no idea.

I believe if you work hard and excel and become famous, then maybe you can become a Datuk.

If you do not know how to get a datukship, then I cannot understand why you did 6 postings at this thread without providing any information. In fact I can call you a Datuk already as you have met the No. 6 characteristic of a datuk you yourself defined above. Sorry lah Datuk HHTee to rub you the wrong way but I quite fancy your third wife. Sorry again, but that is what you said in your posting as characteristic No. 2 and 3.

Not at all. A datukship is totally useless because practically nobody outside Malaysia knows about it. And when they do hear about it, they don't care.

The datuks who work abroad often leave the title off their cards because otherwise they are addressed as "Mr Datuk". Or if they are unlucky enough to meet my mum they find themselves addressed as "katak". She's always mixes up those words!

well sometimes when one examine certain properties, he would then know what's going on (just like post-mortem)

Having money or being politically connected is not all that it takes to become a "Datuk". Make sure the Sultan likes you. If not, just like Idris Jusoh, you will find yourself being called a "Mr." instead of "Datuk". Anyway some of us are already "datuks" (grandfathers) without having to butter up anyone. It's a god-given role when our children are blessed with thier own children.:D
