Hi Everyone

Taylor's University College will be holding a forum on Parliamentary Reform

Date: Wednesday, 12 March 2008
Location: Taylors University College SJ campus, No.1 Jalan SS15/8
Hall: Lecture Theatre 2
Time: 5:30-7:30

In casting their vote in the General Election, Malaysians have given their mandate for the installation of the 12th Parliament. It is timely to reflect on the trust they have placed in Parliament as a symbol of the people's democratic aspirations and in the Members of Parliament as Law Makers. To what extent has Parliament fulfilled its role as an independent legislative branch of government? What checks and balances are in place to ensure that Parliament and Members of Parliament function as intended - with high ethical, professional, and moral standards? Are they benchmarked against international standards? After 50 years of independence, these issues are still at the heart of public discourse in Malaysia.
Panel Chair:

Ambiga Sreenevasan, President, Malaysian Bar Council

Topics and Speakers

1. "Institutional Reform of the Malaysian Parliament" by Pr.f Dr. Shad Salim Faruqi, Faculty of Law, Universiti Teknologi MARA

2. "Ethical Conduct of Malaysian MPs" by Tunku Abdul Aziz, former Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General on Ethics

3. "Regulating Conduct of MPs - The UK Experience" by Prof. Patricia Leopold, Head, School of Law, University of Reading, UK

PM me and I will send you the announcement by email.

Cheers, m

Everyone

I am glad to announce that the Parliamentary Reform forum was well attended, especially in light of the recent election.

One prominent attendee (at least I think it was him) was RPK himself in his hat and sweater...

More info for you if I can find it.

Cheers, m
