My overseas fren wants to know how to cook rice with gas stove. The amount of water to add - would it be the same as using a rice cooker? Better to use steel containers or glass?

On the gas stove, I usually steam the rice... avoids burning  .
Amount of water to add is the same as when using a rice cooker.
I use a stainless steel bowl for steaming.

To cook rice over the gas stove, you learn from trial and error. But basically yeah you use the same amount of water as the rice cooker. First boil the water with rice, then turn to very low fire and cook till the water dry.

use same amount of water as you would if using rice cooker..
1 part rice to 1 1/2 part water should work.

bring rice to a boil..do not cover.
once you see bubbles on surface of rice..like bubbling craters!
lower flame to lowest, change hob if need to, cover pot..
15 mins. to 20 mins.turn off flame..stand 15 mins..
kau tim..

There's another way, instead of letting the water evaporate, just bring the rice to the boil and once it's cooked, just drain the excess water. Either with a sieve or my method is to clip a few clothes peg around the lid and tip over the sink, it takes only a 3 minutes to drain.
