Hi to all,

Problem:
The Nero(v6.x) I'm using can't detect both the DVD-RW & CD-ROM drives.The Infotool says it's " locked by unknown application (code 15) ".

I'm using Win ME.

Thank you in adv.

It is hard to troubleshoot computer problem over a forum. I know if you do not have a stable operating system like XP, then it is going to be almost impossible.
Win ME is one of the most unstable OS. Try upgrading to XP.

Is yours an OEM copy? It may be useable only with the one drive it was packaged with in that case. Just a wild guess.

The Nero that's bundled with DVD-RW has an OEM copy.

Theoretically, an OEM Nero will only recognise and work with the drive it was bundled with. Maybe the presence of another CD Rom drive is making it a bit unhappy.... what happens if you remove that CD Rom drive?

Does your Windows ME recognise the DVD Rewriter and the CD Rom drive as two separate valid drives in the first place?

Extra Info: The Nero only show Image Drive.

The problem is still the same.

2.Does your Windows ME recognise the DVD Rewriter and the CD Rom drive as two separate valid drives in the first place?
Originally,yes.

The answer is no.
Are both drives on the same ATA channel? If so, have you set the jumpers on the drives so that one is a Master, and the other a Slave drive?

CD-Rom is master & DVD-RW is the slave.

CD-Rom is master & DVD-RW is the slave.
Try disconnecting one of them, see if the OS detects anything. Also, make sure that the secondary ATA channel (if that is the connection you're using for both drives) is enabled in the bios.

Another thing to try is swapping the IDE/ATA cable terminals between the two drives. Some motherboards are sensitive to the sequence...I think the middle plug is for the Master, and the one at the end, for the slave (sorry I forget which is which. :D )

Ok, just googled on it; if you're using 40 wire cables, the Master is the middle connection. If you're using 80 wire cables the Master is at the end connection. Crazy system.

Done. The BIOS is set to autodetect.

Okay, when you boot up, does the bios detect both drives correctly? You may have to freeze frame the bootup process by pressing the pause button at the IDE detection stage if it goes too fast.

Please try using the DVD Rewriter as the Master. It is recommended that the slower drive (CD Rom) be set as slave.

Sometimes, different brands/models of drives just do not work well with each other. So in the end, you may have to discard one...the CD Rom, I guess, since the DVD Rewriter is also a CD Rom drive.

Once we have determined that the hardware is ok, then we can move on to troubleshoot on the OS and software part.

Is the above normal or standard practice ?

It's one of those practices which appear to have no proven grounds.

Probably one of those so called theories carried over from the 40 wire cable days....shorter path for the master (usually a HDD: C drive) makes it even faster. Hehe.

.

I tried the aboveThe result was the CD-ROM was o.k but DVD-RW refuse to open. So, I reset it & reinstalled the bus controller before all was o.k .
