Last weekend i decided to buy a tin of Quaker Oats for daily breakfast, as I received a "revelation" of the "evilness" of a daily roti canai can do to your waist (actually i knew for years but there are no other breakfast around here that are "interesting") :D
This morning, I took the tin to the office and had my first oats serving in years and remembered why i never finished my oats before i went to school. Being more matured, and splashed RM10.50, i have finished my first bowl of oats. :p
Since the tin that I bought, actually it was wifey, was 1kg and not wanting to dump the whole tin into the dumpster, is there any kindred spirit out there who can advise how to make a bowl of oat a little easier and tastier and yet make papa Quaker proud?
Bearing in mind, the original plan was to have the oats as daily breakfast, but now...maybe once a month.....err....once a week? Geee, ok ok, 1 (Mon), 3(Wed), 5 (Fri). Might still missed good ole canai. Let's start 2 & 4, if goes down well down to tummy, will then upgrade to 1, 3, 5. :D
*Sigh* Need help

hAHAHA! I had the same problem. My friend recommended oats to reduce my cho.
At first, it tasted like cardboard bits in water. After a while it just like drinking water.
My style 1/3 hot water. 4 big spoon. Stir. Add 2/3 cooler water. Bottoms up :D
You can add milo w/o sugar and some times i see the kids eat with banana and fruits.

I do this way....hope you can decipher my recipe....just like boiling porridge lah!
1. Put some Quaker oats in a small pot and add water - I think about 3/4 cups will do. Something like cooking porridge lah!
2. Place in gas stove. Cook until the oats turned soft and creamy. Careful of overflowing water when it is boiling...
3. Pour into a plate and add some milk. I don't know you...I add a bit of condensed milk. Stir it baby!
4. Heavenly...!!! And healthy..!!!
Enjoy!
Cheers!

This is the traditional way ... Alternate ways that I could suggest :-
1. add raisins or some canned fruits to your cooked oats.
2. serve in more diluted, make it as a drink... drink more frequent. You can add Milo or Coco drink for taste.
Last but not least.... have it with the end in mind - think of your health ... think of praises by your friends, relatives, and most importantly wifey .. and you will eat it. If still difficult to swallow... try to keep yourself busy while eating oats... such as reading newspaper, reading books or surfing internet. :)

Boil like porridge. Lots of water. Add salt and minced meat. No need to add milk as this is a savoury dish.
My mum used to make this for breakfast.
Nowadays, I am on the run but need it to reduce cholesterol. I buy the instant ones and add hot water to make it like a porridge. Add iodised salt. Good for the tea-time when you sometimes have hunger pangs.

Oats...Hmm...heard from my dad's doctor about how to make oats more...well....bearable...is add fruits in...raisins, bananas, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries (pretty much all the berries), or if not, can always cook it with chicken (like porridge), or add honey/maple syrup in like my dad.
Oats (Quaker especially) is proven to reduce cholesterol by a max of 25%. Or so any cardiologists would tell you as well. So eat oats in the morning only and not at night, as the effects will differ by the time of the day...

hi KelvC
there are traditional quaker (need to cook) and instant quaker. i hope u did not by the traditional one and bring it to office...
i used to be like you, roti canai breakfast almost daily but now oat and milk is my daily breakfast and already started 3-4 months...i usually take with milk, banana (ripe), or add raisin, strawberries...
no point adding artificial like salt, ajinomoto since u are turning into health conscious mode.
with daily oat breakfast, balance vege/meat lunch and dinner, a lot of fruits and regular exercise...i lost around 8KG and now my BMI is in the best reading...

Traditional quick cooking oats taste great cooked in water with a pinch of salt and dark brown sugar to taste (you can microwave it)...you can add in milk if you like. Instant ones usually taste yucky!

Sasha's quaker oats styles....
1. low fat milk and water in a bowl, sprinkle in the oats.. zap in microwave on medium or just becareful it doesn't boil over. When u see it almost boiling, stop it. Add honey, and voila! the fastest way. U get your calcium, protein, carbs and loads of fibre in one meal. Add raisins or bananas b4 eating if u like. Bananas good for your heart. :D
2. Part water and part low fat milk in bowl like usual, with the oats. Zap.. till almost boiling. Remove from microwave and stir.. it wil thicken. Add milo powder to it. U get choc flav oats.
3. Want it even healthier? Use soya milk instead of regular milk.
Reason why i prefer to use low fat milk? We all need the calcium and protein.
Why HOney? Better than sugar, tastes better than normal sugar, or else use brown sugar.
Tadaaa... my suggestions for the day. :)

Instead of low fat milk, why not try soya milk (unsweetened)
Careful about using microwave.
Never add cool stuff to microwave stuffs. Also, no stainless steel cup/bowl.

Also, if you use a cup to cook Oats in microwave... be careful of the possible air pocket in the cup, it will bubble up and POP.. some hot stuff might fly into your eyes.
When I was a student, I bought a big box(~50 sack) of instant Quaker oats in assorted flavors( Original, Banana, Cheery...). I use microwave to prepare a quick snack whenever I need one. After adding some water I will stir it to remove some bubble before put it into microwave.
As for quick oat meal, I add just enough water and cook it with microwave. Then add in cold milk and honey to make it cooler and start eating.
that's was my hectic student time.

Would like to drop in a report from my previous post, I have found a way to make the instant Q.Oats more palatable. First, I got myself a nice milk for added flavoring (in this case I got the one with 12 “bijian/wheats”). The milk and Oats (thoroughly stirred) is later thrown into the microwave for 2 minutes. I later then added some of the nuts/raisins thingy, which wifey bought for me, and stir to mix the nuts and raisins evenly. Let me tell you this, it was MUCH better.
I have later experimented with Milo into the milk and Oats which later goes into the microwave. This is interesting too, the Milo powder melts into the milk which added smoothness into the Oats.
Next item to experiment, add nestum cereal then later with banana :D
To those long Oats sufferers, let me say this, there is light at the end of the tunnel! ;)

i am eating instant quaker oats in the office too... cos i dun have time to eat breakfast at home before going out.
but i am eating mine plain cos i remember the reason why i am eating them in the first place. intestinal health and weight management. i find that once i am used to eating them plain, they are alright... so i dun end up adding more calories into the supposedly heathly oat meal.

I'm also eating Quaker oats in the office during lunch time, it's bcoz for my diet purposes. But I will feel hungry around evening time, so I will either make Milo or Quaker to fill up my stomach.. :p

Dear oats consumers,
I eat this porridge with the meat floss (it can be fish, chicken, pork, beef). Optional is add in the finely chopped spring onions. Yummy!
However although it is considered "heathy" food, it is high in G.I. Fattening in long term too....ha ha ha

Condensed milk will definitely make it tastier, but since you are already trying to reduce your roti canai intake for health purposes, you might not wanna substitute that with having quaker oats and condensed milk coz it would clearly defeat the purpose. Nways, my suggestion may not be as tasty as quaker + condensed milk, but it does add a little bit of "zing" to it and does make it creamier.
Go to your local health store, get a tin of POWDERED organic soya bean and a bottle of natural sweetener called STEVIA. I think the brandname is GreenLite.
Every morning, stir 3 heaped tablespoons of the soya bean powder into cold/hot water (depending on instructions on tin to avoid curdling). Then add the Stevia sweetener to sweeten the soya bean mixture according to your taste. Then take as many tablespoonfull of quaker oats as you wish, and add to the soya bean mix. Add more sweetener/water if need be. Bring mixture to boil on the stove or place in microwave to heat it up for a few seconds.
Voila! You're done! It'll be a healthier alternative for you...it tastes pleasant and definitely isnt laden with trans-fat as would condensed milk. Cheers :)

3. Banana
4. Raisins
5. Jam (my fav) - just add 1 spoonful but do not mix it.. a pinch of jam a spoonful of oats into your mouth.. perfect! :D
6. brown sugar

I like to add my instant Quaker oats into my Old Town White Coffee (Hazel Flavour) or Milo. It tastes better that way.
It's true that Oats lower cholesterol. I had high cholesterol and after taking oats for 3 months and a grapefruit every morning plus no red meat, squid and prawns, egg yolks ~ I managed to lower my cholesterol impressively. Even my doctor was terribly impressed! :p

People,...... pls remember that certain heart medications do NOT go along with grapefruit well at all. Pls check with your doctor on it :)
In the meantime, a nice bowl of quaker oats will continue to be harmless :)
