View Full Version : Conman or not?.
Guys. I return from overseas yesterday. I park my car in the airport parking. Before I could reverse my car, an elderly man, age around 45 to 55 came up to me. He said he is from Mentakab pahang. He said he park his car in the airport for 6days. Now he don't have enough money to pay the parking. He explain to the parking attendant but the attendant can not do anything.
He ask me to borrow some money to him. He show me his touch n go. He said got money to pay tol but not enough to pay the parking. He said he is a building contractor in Pahang.
So I ask how much he need. He said he have enough to pay half only and need around RM180 to settle it. He also gave me his Montblanc watch as collecteral. He said he got no choice. Sounds very true and his face very "kesian".
So I gave him RM200. He take off his watch and gave to me. Than he gave me his mobile number. He said his name is Ah Lin. When he return to KL, he will call me and return the money to me.
After he left, I check the watch. I suspect it is fake one from my experience.
So, I need to know from you guys whether any of you have met such person call Ah Lin in the airport parking to borrow money.
Is he a Conman?. But I do it our of sympathy. I don't expect to get back my money.
Thanks.

Never heard of such case. Perhaps you should've followed him to the car park payment counter and pay the money yourself, or at least watch him pay.
Plus, why don't you go to any watch shop and check if the watch is real or not. Aren't you at least curious?

Garo, you can say goodbye to your RM200..surely someone in Kuantan could put in some money to his account and nobody comes unprepared to pay the parking bill in the first place.

Brother, when I talk to him, I just wind down half of my window. And I observe my surrounding before winding down my window. On of the reason is this elderly man looks very humble. I worry if this guy is fake, I might end up in hostile situation if I follow him and his gang is waiting somewhere.
I know the watch is fake because the chain quality is bad. Than the chain do not have part number nor does it have any Montblanc word on it.
This is just pre-caution for other forumer who will park their car in airport parking.

just send the watch to watch shop to verify whether its fake or not. The chain might be a replacement chain and not the original one leh?
if it's fake ar... say bye bye to your RM200 lor.
Anyway, I have heard lots of similar cases like this, all asking for money claiming they are short of cash to go back, stranded lar, wallet got stolen lar... all sort of excuses.

Buddies, Since y'all are talking about the KLIA airport, me wanna share this story with all.
Just be careful when you are paying your parking ticket at the vending machines or at the cashier...
My neighbour kena learn the lesson the hard way... lost his laptop right under his nose... when he wanted to pay, some dude turned up and distracted him long enough for the other fella to swipe that laptop that was in the 'free' trolley... when he realised the laptop was gone, the fella oso cabutted oredi. Went to the security department to view the tapes and saw the whole M.O. ...
Suggest if using the trolleys, to put the strap thru or around the handles and then clip it, just in case [precaution]... if some twit grabs/snatch the laptop or bag, he'd be in a helluva suprise... :p

You'd be suprised. I got thrown out of club once because a particular tribe wanted to pick a fight with my colleagues. Next thing i knew I was out on the streets.
There is also a particular tribe that serves their NS, take some of their spent shells from the firing range. Why you ask? Well the miniscule amount of gunpowder left in the spent catridges makes a quite a spark in discos when thrown on the floor.
When i was there a couple of months back there was also the case of a particular tribe member who was trying to earn his rite of passage/manhood. How you may ask? Well he assaulted a bus driver who was trying to get his non paying girlfriend to pay up. Had to make his father go all the way to the bus depot and get on his knees to beg for forgiveness.
You'd be suprised my friend......
PS Sorry Chang i just couldnt resist, banana or warn me if you see fit for deviating this thread.

This is deviating from the thread but the 6th C is supposedly class.
There are two schools of thought
1- Class being you know classy, flashy clothes, expensive watches refined behaviour, the whole package
2- Class being attitude ie selfless, unpretentious, a one worlder.

the rule of thumb is never ever give anyone a single dime, especially for those who come up to you and beg for money.
On the other hand, I prefer giving my money to an established charity or in lieu of money I give basic necessities.
Hard earn money shouldn't be given away cheaply especially there is no accountability to anyone, why should someone on the street beg for money when they are healthy, with 2 arms and 2 legs?
Again in Garo's situation, I wouldn't give a dime as well KL is filled with this con-man/woman lately using the same excuse over and over again be vigilant and weary of this ploys.
Don't be tempted by Greed, Sympathy, and even Religion just go along with your own business while your on the street, focused on your task and ignore the rest.
I have had Salesman/phone calls telling me that I have won millions, beggers telling me all sorts of Sob stories and now they have resorted to even using Monks to solicit money from the public!

I would... if this was KL 20 years back when people were honest and kind, but times have really changed and coming from a small town from Tawau and living in KL for about 5 +/- years have thought me alot about city life.

I've personally been on both side of the fence. Once I was stranded in a small town without my wallet and no money to even make a phone call home. (won't go into how I got into that unique situation, suffice to say it wasn't pleasent) I had to ask around for some spare change and as you'll expect, most people think you're a conman, just brush you off by quickly walking away before you can even say a word. I eventually had to walk into a nearby government clinic and ask some attendants there for some spare change to make a call. Although the kind lady there gave me some coins, I was given a suspicious stare all the same.
Frankly, I don't blame them cos I'm sure we have all been accosted by some conman or two in our lives and we have learned to be suspicious of stangers approaching us on the streets. But sometimes when we find ourselves in such situations, we realise how cold the world can be.
But thanks to ppl like Garo, conman not withstanding, there is still hope in this world.

Strangely in those remote villages n places...the 'naive' n those without the opportunity of having good formal education...are normally more than willing to help out others in desperate situations.

i had pretty china dolls coming up to me at both the bangkok airport (was at don muang) and KLIA with their sob stories that they lost their tickets and don't have enough money to get back to guangzhou. their stories are all so similar and at leats once, the pretty china doll was accompanied by an elderly lady. i think this is an international syndicate

thx for pointing that out to me just realize it meant the same thing, i learnt something new again today :D
need to update my dictionary
Many years ago, my fren faced the same MO at Subang airport. Man claimed his wallet was with his wife whose flight just took off, and he has no money for toll to JB. Can't remember how much my fren gave him. Such cases make us hesitant to help people who may be genuine or for people to offer help if we really need. Sad world.

some atm in US just need your tumb print and password to withdraw money. Hope we can have that here soon. Singapore is picking up on the biometric atm.
So... unless they willing to cut off their finger..

Personally, I think it is a terrible idea to impose thumb print on all ATM withdrawals.
Can u magine all the 'guys' without a thumb ?
* that means that they have been abducted, kidnapped and robbed ?
Next - don't suggest any eye identifications. I do not like the thought of zapping my eye. Gross

Someone already got their finger chop off
just for their car.
This is a bad idea for the ATM using Finger Print ID.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case when a lot of people
were to be without a thumb or finger if they were to get rob.
Eye recognition this sounds like the movie Minority Report by Tom Cruise.
Next will be speech recognition on the list in the future.

That thumb ID is added feature to ATM. you can use card if you like it. Each ID have a few finger registed, so you got 10 "cards" to spare.
I expect newer thumb ID technology will intergrate tempurature and heart rate sensing all in one module. You you need a "attach" live finger to activate.
it is not the technology that make you lost your finger, your money and your life. It is our society. With or without the tumb ID, the crime is still there.
The credit card crime rate is high in US, you really have to check every transaction on the bill. TumbID give you extra protection. I like such system.
I also use biometic ID to travel between Singapore and Malaysia. For a few years, my passport remain clean, only use the pages for VISA. So I save on renewing the passport.

Don't have to use laser to scan your eyes like those sci movie, just look at a carema will do... Oh! don't need to say Cheessee :D
