I find it strange that an AMD chip with 64x2 is not necessarily twice as fast an an Intel Duo 2 which is (if I am not mistaken) only 32x2

So,the question is should i buy the laptop with AMD turion processor or Intel Duo 2?

The AMD Turion is still a long way behind the Intel's.
The Intel Core2 Duos are more energy efficient and is faster. That translates to faster operations and longer battery life.
Of coz, you'll have to pay more for them.
For comparison, look at www.tomshardware.com under charts.

Just get the Intel Core 2 Duo
Below is the computer that i have bought and it goes like a bullet.
http://www.computeralliance.com.au/parts.aspx?qryPart=8220
but you can get another model which is just as good &
around your price range.

I would not get an AMD at this stage after i went to the computer show in the
states USA i mean, as Intel is so much faster after they do the comparison
live in front of my eyes.

For mobile procs, Intel is still leading. Their C2D, CD procs are fast & energy efficient.
In the latter section, AMD still has a lot of work to do.
Buy one that can get your work done....no if n buts. Spend more on memory instead of the latest tech stuff. Six month down the line it may be relegated to entry level system. I'm no sucker for new high tech stuff that comes at a high price . Life just too short for that chase.

I get a new laptop every 2 yrs so it comes in handy for me.
I claim a new laptop as a business expense for tax deduction.

Well said CCY. Ditto for me and that goes for handphones & PDAs

kwchang, the 64 represents 64bit capable processor. Intel's Core2Duo are also 64bit capable just that they do not advertise it since it uses AMD's technology or compatible with it.

IMHO, AMD Turions are value for money processors and well suited for notebooks at the lower price level - below RM3K. Here, they are basically competing against Intel's non Centrino Celeron, and maybe the older (and slower, power hungry) Core Duos. The AMD combo, with its slightly superior integrated graphics chipset, can easily outperform Intel's offerings for the money, especially since you can have more memory for the same overall budget.
But once you hit the higher priced notebooks at RM3K plus, a new Core 2 Duo will run away with the prizes, provided you get one with a none Intel graphics chipset.

What do you mean???
My laptop comes with a 256mb video card.

Yours is a perfect example of a non Intel graphics chipset. You have an NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS External DDRII 256MB, that's why it goes like a bullet. :D
But if you had gotten your Core 2 Duo Asus notebook with any of the Intel GMA graphics chipsets instead, watch the fizzle fizzle out. Although Intel's integrated graphics are generally okay with standard desktops and 2D stuff, it lags far behind ATI/AMD and Nvidia on the 3D graphics front. Not that integrated graphics are anything to shout about, of course.

FineTuned,
Below is the specs of my laptop
is it good or bad???
1GB NAND Memory for Quick Boot!,
Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz CPU, 2GB DDR2 ,
200GB HDD, DVD Burner, 15.4" 1680x1050 WSXGA+ WideScreen Display,
NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600M GT 256MB Dedicated Video,
Gigabit LAN, 802.11abgn WiFi, Bluetooth, Windows Vista Ultimate.
What do you mean by fizzle out???

Yours is one hell of a speedster. Dump Vista and put in Windows XP and it'll take off like a rocket. :D
Fizzle out means your speedster could slow down to a crawl if you tried any graphics intensive stuff like 3D Games etc.. without that Nvidia Geforce GPU.
The point I was trying to make is, you don't buy a notebook or a pc based on the CPU (in this case, the Core 2 Duo or AMD Turion) alone. A fast CPU coupled with a slow GPU will not do justice to the CPU.
What one needs is a balanced package. If one is only going to surf the web, do some word processing and spreadsheets,or watch a DVD, then an AMD/ATI combo could be a better buy than a Intel Core 2 Duo/GMA below the RM3.0K level. Keep the change for more memory and hard disk space.

So bloody true...
I seriously wonder what is it about Vista... it is a memory hogger and systems resource hogger as well...
Got myself a high end Dell-XPS unit, with 2 Mb Ram and the works... on Vista - it was THE 3 month of computer hell !!!!!! Startup was like forever... the graphics was another issue... Me got so bloody fedup with the Vista that me contacted Dell and kaw-kaw kena from me... that they couriered a FREE CD with the genuine XP Media Operating system,....
Now - startup is like super-fast... :)

hey, don't diss that 2MB of RAM.
some of us gotta make do with slightly more than 500KB of conventional memory.

online12793, how fast does your Vista start with that 2+1Gb, T7500 C2D? Can it complete the boot up within 30 secs? That's how fast my old AMD Duron 650 mHz, running on 384mb ram, boots up into WinXP Pro.
I reckon it will take another year before entry level hardware catches up with Vista's requirements. Then, I may consider ditching WinXP. ;)

Coming back to the intel-amd question, i suggest(that is if u're lucky enough to come across one) an intel core solo =D My laptop is using tat right now n i can say it's definitely more cooler than the core 2 duo my housemates has (under normal working conditions). Single core, less power (energy) needed, less heat, (presumebly)less problems =D
Coooool.....eh....
At 27watts compare to 31watts seems not much difference in peak power consumption. However I believe there may be better power manage than the core 2 . Whatever it is, it also depends on the motherboard's integrated feature to throttle the variable speed as required on demand.
