Not too long ago someone pointed out to me that Butter is better than margarine. Something to do with margarine is processed palm oil and contains harmful fats...Butter is made from milk and it's "natural"...I have since switched from using margarine to butter.

BUT I have also read somewhere that margarine contains carotene. This is suppose to lower cholesterol.

That discussion was way back in 2006. Now that there is more facts and lately the trans fat is bad for the heart and so on...

Which is better?

I found this link http://www.healthcastle.com/butter-or-margarine.shtml

Conclusion: Choose non-hydrogenated soft margarine.

Unfortunately the brands recommended in the website is not found on our local shelves.

I will always say choose the natural over the synthetic. If you r health concious, i.e. you wanna lower colestrol just avoid it and exercise.

conclusion was:BOTH saturated fats and trans fats can raise total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Therefore, you should try to minimize the intake of BOTH saturated fats and trans fats.
and not "choose non-hydrogenated soft margerine" like u mentioned.

I will opt for butter anytime it goes well with anything. If you think it would give you chloesterol then stop eating shop food especially junk food.

Yup, me too. Butter in moderation is a healthier choice.

The other healthy choice is Olive oil based spread. Yummy too.

IMHO...stop spending your life worrying about stupid things like whether butter or margarine is better for you. Eat what you enjoy eating.

The enjoyment factor will by a bazillion times out weigh any possible stupid negative that some goose in a laboratory made up to ensure he could get another grant.

Honestly, it is just so stupid that people even contemplate this stuff.

This week hamburgers are bad for you and will cause cancer and next week they are good for you.

Who cares..............life is short, enjoy it.

Your gunna die no matter what............

For the record, I eat butter because i love the taste.

As in all things what is important is the DOSE
Eat in moderation and you will be OK unless of course if you have a health problem and under the doctor's advice, then you should watch your diet.

However, if you are reasonably healthy, so what's wrong with a little butter? so long as you do not put a one-cm thick slab on your toast (I have seen it being served in the original Kluang Railway station coffee shop) but just make a thin spread, that shouldn't kill you.

For your information, my mother is on SCS butter all her life and she just passed 80 last year. However, she is skinny and frail - so perhaps she has a high metabolic rate that burns away all the excesses and the little butter that she takes is probably doing her more good than harm ;)

I am ashame to admit, but that is exactly how I do it......But it has to be good quality salted butter. "President" butter is one of my fav. But I normally slather an overdose of butter on bread or dinner rolls that I have baked myself....Oh you know, freshly baked bread or rolls that just came out of the oven...still steaming hot.. then you slather cold butter over it...bottom part of butter melting while the top is still cold...oh yum...with a good cup of coffee :p
But with the price of butter gone up so much now, this is a rare occasion.

Actually we're quite lucky to have great quality Aussie, NZ and English butter at the supermart..BUT its now getting very expensive for no logical reason.
Did you know that there's a brand called Bega and the processed cheese is made in UAE?.. and MALAYSIA can't produce great quality butter till now. What local ones are no match for imported dairy. Guess what..it MUST have palm oil..no wonder cannot export..maybe to Africa.

True, Butter is better than Margarine. Once a doctor told me the history of it. Long time ago in England, butter and bread was the food/breakfast for the rich, the poor cannot afford butter. So govt find ways to produce cheap highly processed oil (which is called margarine now) to supply to the poor as a replacement. From health point of view, yes, Margarine is considered very unhealthy :(

I get information about butter and margerine before. That information said butter is better than margerine because margerine is 1 step nearly to become a plastic!!! It is true?
