You already hear of prices soaring. Prices of essentials have already been increased if you check your favourite outlet.
Retailers have hoarded all these stuff to make a kill and who is going to suffer? Especially those who are celebrating this occassion? no all of us.
Carrefour has no stock of chicken this morning.

The government can only talk and give warnings but the end of the day the ppl will still have to pay through their noses for the buka puasa delicacies and the for shopping bill. Year after year its the same story the authorites will close their eyes as time goes bye. We are at the mercy of the sellers thats all!

Btw the prices of dates have doubled the price now.

When demand increases, market prices go up.

You want to keep prices down? There are two ways...price controls (price ceiling) which ultimately creates shortages in the market and is unfair to sellers...or reduce demand...which makes the festive season less festive dont you think?

I figure, if I want to enjoy the festive season, I should expect to pay higher prices....

ya true what you saying is what we have learnt in econmics..but in malaysia it is question of profiteering and making a kill. There wont be another opportunity like this.ya?

For the majority of sellers this is the chance to expand their bank account at the expense of the hungry customers.

Personally i dun mind paying extra in exchange of good quality services/products.. I am not in favour of keynesian style economics or govt intervention at all...There should be minimal price controls. Sometimes businesses need to earn a profit too to survive. When the govt start monitoring price of milo ais, i think that's too much. On another note i do think that transportation cost like taxi fares need a hike. It is too low for the taxi drivers to survive, hence you have all the rogue taxis problem, overcharging etc

Today's Star has an article on Page B10 Foreign News on price of wheat has hit a world record USD9 a bushel due to poor harvest in Australia and Canada (I wrote about this last month in a separate thread, remember?)

This translate to about RM300 increase per tonne (which is 1,000kg) of high protein flour or RM0.30 per kilo. Do you think the flour millers can take this sitting down?

So, they will have to pass on the cost increase to their customers. So expect noodles and bread to increase soon!

FYI the last price increase of white bread was in 1996 from RM1.60 to the present RM1.90 per standard 400g loaf as price of white bread is under government price control. So bakeries are now not baking any more white bread, they resort to poor quality buns and rolls since these are not price-controlled. In the end, consumers suffer.

I understand the fight between flour millers and the ministry and the major bakeries with the ministry is so hot and pricky even the whole Putrajaya can feel it. But that was really the Sumatra tremors yesterday, but the price increase fight is going on till middle of the night, nevertheless.

Expect more to be announced in a day or two......

Expect more to be announced in a day or two......As I am teaching the economics of supply and demand and the market, and price controls, I am having a field day...my students are thinking and discussing and inquiring about economics like never before :D

There is nothing like a vacation (free time for thinking) + festive season (increased demand) + government price controls (economic issues) to get the economic juices going :p

Not to mention a parallel argument about minimum wages (a good example of a price floor) going on thanks to the MTUC....

As well as a chance for them to discuss the role of government AND the political and social side of economics (the normative/policy stuff).....

Hehehehehhehe Im so happpeeeeeeeee :D Today one entire class actually stayed 25 minutes after school asking questions and discussing ideas about price controls :D :D

As I went to pasar tani nearby my house yesterday, price of ayam percik increased RM0.20 to RM2, jagung also increased RM0.20 to RM1.20 while nasi lemak remains at RM1 but the quantity shrunk very obvious.

The stall which normally sell in the morning is now operating at the Ramadan Bazaar, and the price now is RM2.50 for nasi dagang, a hike of RM0.50 compared to his normal selling price.

SO?? Take it or leave it.

AAB thinking of raising petrol price? Good...take away the full subsidy and set at RM2.50. That is good.

reusable containers, tiffin carriers, bags/boxes from home....please, bring them along with you when you go for the Ramadan Bazaar...

If they can do it at the TTDI Ramadan bazaar (cut plastic and styrofoam usage) (http://www.thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2007/9/14/central/18884572&sec=central) then we can do it in USJ and Subang Jaya

but, got to try it for yourself to know the feeling, heya...

anyone interested to join your muslim brothers and sisters and try fasting?

Tho, I will point out, it's not easy....

So Our AllUrban teaches Economics :D

I remember reading a section on the Economics of Black Market by Taggart or something like that. I wonder if this author will in future come up with a section titled, "The Economics of Corruption" :D and "The Economics of Raising Curry Puffs from RM0.30 to RM3.00" :D

What about the "Berbuka Puasa" buffets at all the 5-star hotels in KL? Full houses, packed tables (extra tables crammed in, too) and a cornucopia of food and drink......

And a whole lot of wheeling and dealing going on...you see these guys (and gals) with handphones and files talking hush-hush...you just know that deals are being cooked up.

Is this truly the spirit of Ramadan?
