CASSA CHIEF ASSAULTED BY RESTAURENT THUGS AT SUNWAY.

The Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (CASSA) today called for a consumer boycott of all eateries belonging to the Taj group of restaurants in Subang Jaya and Sunway after thugs claiming to be operators of the said restaurant assaulted CASSA Chief Dato Dr Jacob George as he was taking pictures of the said eatery after receiving complaints from consumers and foreign workers.

CASSA received complaints that at the said eateries:

1. Food was prepared under unhygienic conditions
2. Tables were put on roads in front putting consumers at risk of injuries
3. The five–foot walk ways were congested with tables placed causing inconvenience to members of the public
4. Foreign workers at the said eateries were illegal and several had not being paid their wages for several months. Questions were also raised whether these workers have health certificates and the said restaurant having a ‘Halal Certificate’ from the relevant authorities.

On receipt of the said complaints and after privately interviewing several of the “workers”, CASSA conducted a comprehensive survey of the said eateries in Subang Jaya and Sunway.

There were no incidences at the Subang Jaya outlet.

However’ while Dr George was attempting to take several photographs of the Sunway Taj Restaurant from the main road two individuals came out and one identified himself as “Michael” the Manager claiming he has instructions to prevent the taking of the said photographs at any costs.

Dr George was pushed to the ground and attempts made to take and smash his camera.

Shocked and shaken, and fearing for his safety, Dr George ran to the Bandar Sunway Police Station at PJS11/28A to request for police assistance.

The Police immediately sent two officers to protect Dr George to complete the photo taking and to prevent any further attack on him

Dr George lodged a Police report at the said Police Station the same night.

CASSA calls upon the IGP and the Ministry of Home Affairs and the relevant government licensing bodies to initiate a comprehensive investigation into this irresponsible act and for the police to initiate an investigation at this criminal intimidation and assault of a high profile public figure who was only doing his duty as a consumer advocate in the public interest.

Over the last couple of years, many of these similar type of restaurants have opened branches everywhere... they are the only ones who put the tables all the way out into the road, use unhygienic food preparation methods, blardy filthy toilets, and employ thugs to 'protect' their businesses. Malaysians will continue to throng these places till 2-3 am in the morning for their teh tarek, roti gareng and what have you, without giving 2 hoot that we are actually supporting unhygienic food outlets and the breaking of law. Tell me, who is to blame here?

And people like CASSA chap gets beaten up for trying to correct the situation but what about the town councils, the police and the Ministry of Health? Where are they? Busy managing their sports associations?

As consumers, we must all realize that it is important to take unilateral action, even if we act alone and feel that 1 customer won't kill the business but if all of us have the same attitude, like it or not, the eateries will then realize that they have to maintain hygienic eateries to survive.

So, I repeat the question here again - who is to blame for the current condition? Answer is clear - its us consumers. We just close one eye and hope the cops, the town council, the Ministry of Health will do the job. But think about it - the csutomers is king here, we can make the difference!

Thank you friends for the support and good wishes.

The handphones have not stopped ringing enquiring about DJG after the assault was reported in the Malay Mail today at page 10 with calls from several members of the cabinet, aduns & MPs, prominent lawyers, Christian and Buddhists priests, civil society members, grassroots leaders and from certain foreign embassies.

We are really touched at this. Thank you so much.

Dr George has gone for a medical check after complaining of pain on his back and on his left leg which may be due to the fall he took when he was pushed by one of the assailants as they attempted to grab the camera.

The film footage came out extremely well and has the identity of one of the assailant as well of proof of consumer claims!

The restaurent is part of the Taj Curry House which is in front of SJMC and another 50 meters from the Sunway Police Station at PJS 11/28A.

We hope DJG is ok - like you we are awaiting his return from the medical. His wife and children have been really upset. Your prayers appreciated too.

Appreciate if someone can paste up the Malay Mail report in the forum too -thanks.

Thanks. IA, DJG will be ok!

That's good to hear!!.. DJG is assured of my prayers and support in his endeavours for best public interest. We need more people dedicated individuals like DJG for a better Malaysia!.

Meanwhile, I've posted a boycott topic at Low Yat Net Community forum to highlight the issue. I believe there's a large group of young people (students and others) residing within Subang/Sunway area that may have frequented this restaurant.

Hi friends,

Thanks alot for the calls, prayers and support.

The back and right leg is quite sore and quite painful but no fracture though and thats good news.

As Nora indicated the photos turned out to be just great and copies have been made. Even the attackers are on film!

If someone from this forum could meet up with me in Subang Jaya somewhere tomorrow I could pass a couple and you could put it up this forum. My computer skills is zero friends!

Thats not all - those behind this attack on me will be held accountable!

I can still hear that chap's words to me before he pushed me trying to get at my camera:

'**** told me to stop you at any costs from taking any photographs....You have no right to take photographs without getting our permission - even from the road. Don't try to be funny, we know where you live and about your family........"

This kind of attack must never be repeated. We must make sure of this!

Theres a report in today's Malay Mail too. Good if you could put it up here too. Thanks for all the support. JG

we had this experience at one of our used to be favourite nasi kandar shop,

one day afternoon me and wifey are enjoying our favourite nasi kandar at one of the nasi kandar shop we usually frequent.
While we are happily munching away our nasi kandar, one of their lady staff started to sweep the floor at our table, with the ceiling fan at full blast, and ask us to lift up our leg so that she can sweep under our table!
I nicely tell her off that we sedang makan sini, boleh sapu tempat lain dulu? dan boleh kecilkan putaran kipas sebelum u start sapu? Habuk berterbangan lah.
OK, she went over to sweep other corner first, but didn't turn down the fan speed. Nevermind we thought, since she's a bit far from our table, so the dust shouldn't be flying into our plates. But guess what? Just after a few minute she came back to our table again, and start sweeping beside our table.
We are so disgust and upset with them, we just stand up leave the food there on the table, which we only took a few bites, pay and leave.
and the nasi kandar shop has been in our blacklist ever since... no matter how delicious is their food, we will never ever step foot into any unhygienic restaurant.

Btw, recently I just found out the same restaurant has close down, serve them right! ;)

Shaneburger, your offer is very noble. But based on CASSA318's posting, "Shocked and shaken, and fearing for his safety, Dr George ran to the Bandar Sunway Police Station at PJS11/28A to request for police assistance. The Police immediately sent two officers to protect Dr George to complete the photo taking and to prevent any further attack on him
", I should think it should be replaced with,

"Being brave and NOT fearing for his own safety, Dr. George marched down to the Bandar Sunway Police Station at PJS11/28A to request for backup. The Police immediately sent two officers to accompany Dr George to complete the photo taking and to prevent any further attack on him by thugs
"

If Dr. George was shaken and shocked and fearing for his safety, Dr. George wouldn't have gone back to re-take the photos. :D

just in case anyone was wondering where the heck is this Taj Curry House

I just walk past it during lunch time to go to Public Bank.
It's located just beside the Persiaran Lagoon, beside Sunway Pyramid, same row and just beside Public Bank.
The Sunway Police Station is just a few steps away.

It's surprising to see how daring are those thugs to assault someone right in front of the plain view of the police station!

Brother PCYeoh says he will put the photo up tomorrow. :)
On another point but one we think is related to the earlier assault - we have now seen an upsurge of telephone calls in both my mobile and the CASSA fax line at weird hours of the moning - between 2.15am to 4.30am.
When we reply there is no one at the other hand or just 'someone coughing and clearing the throat.' But sounds, eerie! Perhaps, its 'telephone harrassment' now? .....but no numbers .....private number of just the words 'call' comes?
Weird!

Weird!Hey Doc, I'm sure it is related. It is just the cowards' way of harassing you to back off. You should make a report, the telco can still trace a "private number" if a police report is made. A "private number" is not visible to the call receiver but the telcos know the identity, they have to charge somebody for the call, don't they?

Anyway, do still take care, don't forget that what you did as a duty has cracked some rice bowls too.

Then tehre was a report a few days ago of an artiste in Old Klang Road getting robbed abd sodomised! What is the police doing?

Let me see...the enforcement were around the last few days doing their job very well...then when I asked, they sayed DPM or was it PM was doing his rounds in Subang Jaya so they must make sure everything ok...what the ***** is this la.

Now we have thugs...thugs got so bad in an area in Selangor the other day that residents marched to the police station to demand something to be done..only then they moved...so how?

I have the same situation here in another part of Selangor. The police in my area seldom make their rounds. When we had a neighbour hood watch gathering and invited the police, the police gave a wonderful speech. Then, it was the residents turns. Many residents complained that they were robbed, they were slashed, etc. etc. They blamed the police for not making their rounds. Some even made daring accusations right in front of the police. After this gathering, I only see some police cars patrolling.

In short, they need some sort of push before they work!

I am sorry if I hurt anyone here but this is a fact.

It is sad, when I was in Australia in Perth for studies, someone broke into my bedroom whilst I was away for 1 hour! My housemates were in classes and I was in a different schedule. When we called the police, they came withinn 15 minutes. They took a statement, photos and even asked for a contact number so they can update. They actually called a week later to inform that they had no further leads and that they will advise me if they do and hence their last call.

That was 10 years ago. Cops there are tall, healthy without tummies and take their jobs with pride.

Alas, ours...let me see...I was at KLIA yesterday fetching my girlfriend. I saw traffic policemen, smoking and puffing away in public! What is that?

Now, only last Friday, on the way back from JB, we stopped at Ayer Keroh, I saw a group of policemen in 3 patrol cars all stopping for lunch????/ Errrrr...group lunch? Worse still, they held guns with the barrel pointing forward!!!! aiseh...is that the right way?

We have all these meet the police...what for? I know Tan Sri want to make things better but without our gomen support...apamacam?

We have problems with Indons, Bangladeshis, Myanmar, Viets, Pakistanis etc...not all but quite a frightening few...see in Selayang, they took over the market and we are not doing anything!!! Wow...what immigration is this and what are police for? They expect the town council to remove? The idea that the media highlighted and still without concrete answers, baffles me.

How lah like this...are we that safe?

I believe this is quite true of cops in many well developed countries but NOT Malaysia!.
I'll not attempt to pour slime about our cops as how bad they could be villified but, they ARE keeping the peace to a satisfactory level, disregard up's and downs we may have heard or observed or by their own set of crude and inhumane strategies or not. The trend of crimewaves can never be controlled but only by a great amount of preventive measures, both sides.

Gone are the days when an ordinary P.Constable in PDRM was a repected job, respected by their own community where they reside and parents would agree easily allowing their "anak dara" to marry anyone of them for a stable future. The top brass were educated people (moreover English educated and worked under the wings of colonial management) and can be said with lots of dignity, integrity, well learned and respected highly. Well, even school teachers shared similar praise.. THAT was say before the 1970's and I can't think the same of current batch of cops. Their current methods, practices and behavior (based on public opinion), their people communication skills have gone to the dogs and I'm thinking its beyond redemption. Ok..will end here. I'm just so sad of the turn of events leading to what we can likely hear or witness on the reputation of PDRM. 2020 is to my mind..FARrrrrr FETCHED!.

Nevertheless, I'm glad DJG received needed assistance and cooperation from PDRM. On this note.. thank you PDRM!.

C'mon KWChang!..allow me to say that many criminal events can be easily lead to anyone questioning or comparing the role, integrity and attitude of PDRM,..and in this case, DJG's attackers are not very from the police station and these flers have all the audacity, giving the impression they're bold, NO fear of police action and the law that'll prevent them from any act of aggression that could bring upon themselves trouble. Moreover THEY SEEM TO KNOW who DJG is. Are the rakyat loosing confidence in PDRM?..AFAIK, the rakyat at large will not praise they're in the best of quality service or with utmost efficiency.
So, we?..we are NOT at liberty to take the law into our own hands, arm ourselves or have adequate protection to support DJG even if its a collective community effort.
Anyway.. while waiting for actual pictures to be posted up..we keep the thread alive lah.. can or not?..

Well, off topic but IMHO it is one of the root cause for the boldness of the thugs. I think we are responsible people and not living in denial like some people outside. Therefore, I think that its good to raise awareness of issues that could possibly reduce such action.

well... at least the cops accompanied doc to finish off the photo sesh.

I think an invitation should also be sent out to representatives of restaurant associations, Indian Muslim associations to hear whatever message DJG may want all to hear...for the best interest of both the consumer AND vendor. From my POV, its working towards a better Malaysia where vendors have RESPONSIBILITY towards its customers and not resort to bullying and agression whoever flouts the law. Matters can always be resolved amicably. In the name of PEACE! :)

KOSMO! - a Bahasa Malaysia tabloid newspaper from the Utusan Chain today carried a story of the assault on page 14 complete with photo.
Comments from the Police as well - "investigations going on and no arrest made so far'.
If someone could scan and put up the image up here more can read. Terima Kasih.

no fairplay5 - our DJG is not trying to be a hero like you say.
As a leading Consumer Advocate, he is just doing his duty, as head of a consumer organization to protect consumer and public interest. He did not start today but 35 years ago, as a young 15 year old under the training of the Master himself - Mr S.M. Mohd Idris the President of Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) and SAM.Then at FOMCA/AMPSCORE and now leading CASSA.You can check on this at http://www.cassa.org.my or at http://www.drjacobgeorge.com/ - the weblog. DJG also blogs and has been a long time. What we need is more people like him around to make our society and nation better. :)

Oh well, I trust DJG should know best. Main thing is that the current consumer will not take lightly to obnoxious, acts of aggression and more so..CHEATING!. Thanks to the internet the public have more avenues to be aware of current happenings. (NO Thanks to controlled mainstream media OEM fitted with HEAVY FILTERS, the more its relied upon, we're damned!)

Just to clarify:

The PC that has been organized is to address the issues and allegations at length that prompted CASSA to undertake the probe.

This is a private meeting cum PC with an open invitation to the usj.com.my forumers who came to the support of CASSA and DJG.

We wanted to meet up with all of you over refreshments.

We really appreciated this noble thing all of you did to rally around DJG and us.

We were very motivated and strengthened by this action of all of you.

Thanks.

The PC will be a shocker as we will release the real reasons why we think DJG was attacked and threatened - with proof of course.

for your information Pak Kadok - we had given the sample photos to certain senior usj.com.my forumers during the 'teh tarik session' last friday. I believe Mr PC Yeoh was supposed to put it up - bt then had problems with his scanner according to DJG.
Tomorrow there is a PC - If - the photos are not up by then, we will hand over several to either Bslee or others at the PC to help us put it up. :)

I have gone through some of the photos and have discussed with DJG about content of the photo that many are not suitable to be uploaded here and he agreed. There is one foto that many of you are keen to look at and this is the one. I guess the two people are taking each other snapshot. And since this has become a police case, I don't think it is appropriate to publish all of them here. I will hand over the remaining foto to CASSA to take further action.

The PC went on well. The media exposure and Q & A were enlightening to all.

We had full turn out of the media crew. Our lawyers, secretariat team and well wishes were also there.

For those who turned up to support the CASSA TEAM and have lunch with us - thank you.

Your presence was very much appreciated by all of us.

We went public at the PC to thank all the Forumers for the prayers, well wishes and support they had given me and the CASSA TEAM.

Thank you!

The battle has just started! ;) :)

BREAKING NEWS! - 11 August 2007

NOW A THREAT OF SUIT FOR TRESSPASS AGAINST DJG?

The assault and criminal intimidation against DJG was not enough?

Now we hear that there is talk that they want to sue DJG for tresspass of their premises!.

By earlier threatening DJG and also his family they have already got personal and are now the subject of investigation under Sections 324 and 506 respectively!

CASSA puts this on record!

DJG is the President and legal adviser of a registered consumer body - the Consumers Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (CASSA).

He was undertaking his role in the public interests as President and as expected of a Consumer Advocate after receiving complaints from the public.

He is the leader of a team of volunteers addressing public interest issues.
None of us are on any pay role and all our activities and expenses come from our own pockets - period!

As far as 'tresspass goes' that is nonsense!

We acted on complaints.

Complaints and proof that we put on record before a large audience of mainstream media on Thursday!

So we say this -

Don't just talk - Please go ahead 'Sue Us!'
We will see you in Court!

So this issue is going to drag on, what a sorry state of affairs. Just hope Cassa will not give up what it has started.

Puan Nora has been very deligently keeping us informed of the latest developments in this forum...it would be good if many more residents of this township get to know this incident...none of my neighbours know about this.

Why should a restaurant be so freaking afraid of 'trespassing' by the representative of a consumer association unless there are really things to hide? Perhaps things like cockroaches, dirty pots and pans, food kept next to toilet, old curry mixed with today's curry etc?

What can USJ forumers do to help this case? Hey Doc, tell us, how can we help you? Tell us if you need the legal fees to defend the suit, show those buggers by suing the President of CASSA they are suing all USJ/Shah Alam/Subang consumers.... thats US!

CASSA318

Thank you Green Bug and all for the support and that has indeed made our day! Thanks you. Your words -

Tell us if you need the legal fees to defend the suit, show those buggers by suing the President of CASSA they are suing all USJ/Shah Alam/Subang consumers.... thats US!

These words are so motivating and assuring. :)

We are awaiting for two things:

1. the decision of the police vis a vis Section 324 and 506 - the assault and threat to DJG.
2. their threat of suing us for 'tresspass' which is a tort but we can assure all that this is ridiculous and a suit that we will fight all the way. We are awaiting them to serve us their papers.

Anyway, DJG is seeking an appointment with the IGP to hand over a completed dossier on this event so that the IGP is aware of this assault and threat to a consumer advocate. We take the assault and threat to DJG and his family seriously and this must be addressed!

We have also sought legal opinions as we await the service of their legal suit.

We will call for a 'teh tarik session' speedily so that well wishers, friends, supporters and all of you who have been a tremendous strength to us can join in a 'brain storming session' to address whatever our response since we believe YOU are our family too!

Thanks
