Hi folks,
Anyone wants to dump away their crashed or unusable 3.5" desktop hard disks? Doesn't matter what brand as long as desktop type.
I need to cannabalize some internal parts for my own personal purposes..not for any commercial intent.
If you have any that I can self collect within Subang/USJ, let me know by PM or sms to 016-3431850.

I wonder what do you do with "some internal parts" as I always thought you cannot open a hd and DIY repairs.

I have the urge to collect spares obtainable from the HDD's rare and nicely machined parts like the screws, the motor, the platters, some internal mechanical parts for my personal DIY'ing hobby. Its easily dismantled with proper tools. No rocket science here.
Surely..the repair of discarded hard disks never crossed my mind..which is actually futile.

Anyone with any?.. all thrown away ah? :p

Hopefully you're not trying to scavenge for data on the hard drives, eh. :p

Adoi!.. AFAIK, once hdd is dismantled..its already more or less destroyed and data unrecoverable.
Wah!.. you folks so suspicious ah?..My Good Lord!.. ;)
Neighmind lah! please don't give if one feels suspicious. Just hope whoever picks it up at the rubbish dump is not a rocket mechanic.
I don't want to be seen offending anyone with some ill intent.

I don't want to be seen offending anyone with some ill intent.Don't be so upset. I am just curious as to whether you know how to repair or recover a hd., in case I need your help. :D

If I was to throw or give people my hd I would properly de-magnetizes it first if I cannot hard format it.

Based on some past knowledge, its almost NOT possible for anyone to DIY repair a hard disk, unless the fault lies at the motherboard of the HDD and one hopes is not due to a mechanical failure. If its the latter, sorry..gone case!. But to swap the motherboard, it must be exact same model for it to work..no alternatives, if's or but's..
Im unsure if any form of de-magnatizing will have any effect even with a big fat magnet obtained from a loudspeaker. AFAIK, the only way to erase all data is to use some utility to write all zero's onto the hdd or format in full, even then the hdd must be fully functioning. Formatting will also check for bad sectors and isolate it from the good areas.

Anyway, one needs a clean room which is only available at the manufacturer's factory with exact replacement parts on hand plus the expertise. Failing all that, its next to impossible success!. Once opened, dust and micro particles from our free air will kill it no time.
I don't do repairs nor have the time to bother repairing. I've only the ability to diagnose if it its gone case or not. With some luck, depending on the integrity of the hdd itself, its possible to quickly recover the data..like people say..50-50 chance lah...maybe 10-90 chance can also recover..its luck!.

hey bslee, are you into robotics? I figure all those actuator-arm motors could be used for very creative contraptions. Of course, I agree that those micro screws may have some use one day

By the way, anyone knows how to dispose of printed circuit boards? I understand they pose a heavy-metal hazard to landfills.

Thank you very much.
Trust me, I won't bother diagnosing or whatever, it'll be dismantled almost immediately and NOTHING is retrievable..all lost to oblivion.. ;)

Folks, at the same time, if anyone may have a WIRELESS ROUTER (any other brand or type except LINKSYS) that's ROSAK, BEYOND REDEMPTION and want to THROW AWAY, please kindly give to me if possible. Yes, I need to cannabalize the antenna terminal to mod my router to having an interchangeable antenna stick. My Netgear is with a fixed antenna..and so my mod will benefit me..
ANYONE?
