Of course there isn't any free M office anywhere but there are similar free Open office that is just as good if not better. Have been using it for the whole office for a few years now without any problem. Imagine installing 50 Microsoft office suit in my pejabat.....$$$$$$$$ :eek:

What limited are you refering to ?
Basically it is a free ....literally free if you download it....useable full office suite. If you use Staroffice before you'll know what it is...

All open source "office" applications will open MS Office documents. Otherwise they would not be able to exist. The crux of the matter is to provide free and legal alternatives to Microsoft.

These open source applications will however not be able to act like 100% microsoft products, otherwise they would be violating copyrights. So be prepared for some slight differences. If you can overcome the lack of familiarity, you will be able to get out of the clutches of Microsoft.

I congratulate your sincerity to not get pirated versions of MSoft.

hi CCY thanks so much for the soft ware link u gave. it is really very useful almost exactly same as microsoft word,powerpoint, excel.. i have even tried to open microsoft word and powerpoint file using this programe and i can even open it...thksssssssssssss...

Really? I find that quite a number of free sites list numerous apps that does the same thing. So it does take quite some effort to find the one you like best. It can be quite daunting for those who are not that well versed.
Of coz, the worst case scenario for these freebies would be to format your machine when something goes wrong. :D
I have run into some limitations of free office softwares. They do not fully support Microsoft's version of macros and there's also compatibility issues with VBA. Thought I'd just point it out.

I think it's the other way round......Microsoft's stuff is not compatible with most Open Source material. I can read Microsoft's stuff with OOo, but Microsoft can't read mine. :D

And some of the Microsoft security features go bust with OOo....I find that I can sometimes read `hidden stuff' in word documents and excel spreadsheets even without the necessary permissions.

I don't think you get what I'm trying to get across.
Despite everything, a lot of users are still stuck with Microsoft Office. So if they were to send you files with either macros or VBAs involved, they might be compatibility problems.
I'm only highlighting that.

I have not used MS Office for over 10 years now. I have no problem reading .docs, .xls, and .ppts sent by my corporate/overseas suppliers, complete with macro viruses (nicely stopped in their tracks by my OOo) and all. The original formating goes haywire in my OOo frequently, but the basic data is fine and perfectly readable.

The problem with using MS Office stuff is that not many people know how to use them securely, and they end up unknowingly giving away secrets of their trade. I have on occasion received xlses which contained classified matter (not for my eyes) which remained locked using MS Office, but OOo displays it. So which is more compatible?

The insistence on using MS Office, just because many people are already using it, is exactly the trap that MS laid down, and we shouldn't fall for it. Please note that even MS Office is not fully compatible amongst different versions of itself.

So, mlkok, I'm highlighting the fact that it is MS Office users who will continue to have compatibility problems with the rest of the world. And the proof is that MS has agreed to change from its own proprietary format to Open Source document formats in future..........
