Flash Flood Hit KL Again (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/6/11/nation/17990137&sec=nation)

Just wonder if there will need more smart tunnel to be built in KL? Guess 1 smart tunnel is not smart enough to mitigate the heavy downpour.... imagine, it was just a short rain yesterday ... What will happen to KL if it rains continuously for 2 or 3 days just like few years back? Habis .... :o

Worst if the tunnel has defeat the purpose in managing the stormwater... how does Samy can convince people to pay for the mystery toll rate?

Abstracted From THE STAR dated 11th June 2007
“I’ll announce the toll rate in one or two days,” he told reporters after opening the Hindu Dharma Mamandram national delegates’ meeting in Batu Caves yesterday.

“I can’t guarantee there’ll be a reasonable toll because it costs a lot of money to build the tunnel,” Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu said.

Noted from the Chinese Dailies the entrance to the Smart Tunnel from Jalan Tun Razak was flooded. Seriouly one have to consider whether to use the tunnel when there is a heavy downpour.

Did the authority carry out any mocked out test in a flooded condition before granting CF?

Did the authority carry out any mocked out test in a flooded condition before granting CF?I doubt so. It'll be interesting to see how effective this Smart Tunnel is. So far so bad. :(

Ahaha....I can be witness to the floods....I was scratching my head....i tot the drain was the lowest level....haha....but the flood was at the entrance of the tunnel.

i once saw the construction of SMART in Discovery. I am really impressed by the construction and technology used. However, i missed the part where they showed the simulation in case theres a flash flood. Does anyone knows how it actually works? or came across a video clip of the simulation from Discovery?

This SMART tunnel suppose to close up when there is a flash flood... So, imagine, what if there is traffic jam outside the tunnel... and long queue inside the tunnel... How will this tunnel close for traffic when flood is rising? On second thought, better don't use the tunnel for own safety.

Aiyahh, you don't expect the tunnel to fill up with water while traffic is still in the tunnel! If they had designed the tunnel for this purpose, obviously they will have contingency plans such as stopping traffic from entering the tunnel, then ensuring all the traffic has left the tunnel before the flood gates are opened. Remember the tunnel is meant as a bypass - hence the water held at the north retention pond will be held back by flood gates and only released when they get the all-clear signal that the tunnel has been evacuated.

LRT trains derailing, monorail wheels falling off...and perhaps the next big thing - flood gates accidentally open when they shouldn't! :p

(make no mistake, the tunnel is built to solve the flood woes in the city caused by the klang and gombak rivers. authorities are now claiming otherwise...)

Err buddy Teeque...thanks for posting the link to Discovery's piece on the construction of the complete SMART tunnels...

Discovery says...the tunnels are costing 250 millions(assuming USD)...which would equate in RM sense...about 900 millions...???(wrong quotation or reporting perhaps)

An opposition party claims(since Feb 2007) that...the Malaysian government...is spending 1.3 billions in ringgits of our $$$...to build the SMART tunnels...while the SMART concessionaire(so named SMART Sdn Bhd) is spending 600 millions in riggits of their $$$.

However...the opposition party goes on to reveal that...ONLY the SMART company SMART Sdn Bhd...is entitiled to the toll collections beginning from this Friday...15th June 2007 until the year 2030(Orchi would likely be dead by then).

Read the accusations here... (http://en.keadilanrakyat.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=647&Itemid=1) n see if you wanna believe it...or NOT? It is entirely upto you...lah!

So...who or what is right...n who or what is wrong...? You intelligent(smart or not smart readers)...digest it on your own...lah!

Err buddies...heard over the radio in the past couple of days that...after a couple hours of heavy downpour in the late afternoon in the KL City n PJ areas...many low lying major roads ...expressways...around the Cities...were affected by flash floods again...

The Star... (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/6/14/nation/18021750&sec=nation) even has a report which says...parts of the SMART tunnel TOLLED roads...were covered in pool of water in the recent severe flash flooding incident...in the KL City.

Syabas again...!!! the SMART tunnel officials...could NOT be reached for comments...(perhaps they fear it maybe possible that their comments would be misquoted...or something like that?)

No need to wonder further. As long as our local councils allow commercial areas to dirty public areas and channel all their wastes directly into public drains, this will substantially help clog drains to cause floods and pollute our ponds, rivers and seas! see thread discussion on how MPSJ is encouraging shops to pollute & clog our drains at http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=18142.

Look at Holland (Netherlands) the country below sea level. Never had flood woes like us. May be we must learn fr the Hollanders or may be easier to just get a few tips from our Singaporean friends on how to maintain street & public area cleanliness! :)

I used this last night from KL back to Subang. It started near Berjaya Times Square in front of ParkRoyal and exits at 2 areas...I chose the KLIA/Seremban exit as it conects to Kesas. It costs RM2 and you pay when you exit.

There are only 2 lanes inside and can be claustrophobic as it a good 10 mins inside or so . Speed limit is 60km/hr

Otherwise, I got back from KL in 30 mins...smooth! :)
