Hi there

I'm interested to buy a Nokia 6300 but need to know if it has a function that I really, really need. I am able to charge by current phone using a usb cable. The cable takes power from my computer's usb port and leads it to where the normal charger cable would plug in.

I checked the Nokia website and it does not specifically mentions whether this is possible with the 6300.

Just wondering if anyone out there knows?

he means most new nokia phones are able to charge via usb.. as they come with a small head adapter... but if you need to charge via the old charger you can too....

Think you can find these compatible cables at Low Yat Plaza..full of these thingys.
However.. Please don't be so liberal in using laptop USB for cup warmers and charging phones.. its risky the port may kaput resulting it being crippled and beyond economical repair. If not mistaken, USB is limited to 100mA current capacity per port and certain devices draw more current than it can handle. I leave this note to your prudence.

thanks for the clarifications :D on my behalf

coz i didnt have a look at the 6300 phone yet, i'm not sure whether it's using the smaller charger head (some newer nokia model does)...but not to worry, nokia usually will provide a bigger to smaller head converter adaptor along with their package...meaning any older nokia charger that u have is still usable provided u need to use the converter...so ginaphan, ur nokia usb charger will still come in handy...all u need is to plug in the converter...

For the review... (http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-6300-en.shtml) u can read it here.... :)

Ginaphan, so long ur phone can use USB cable to transfer files, pix or music ... it automatically charging ur phone at the same time. The only problem is it will affect ur battery performance due to the voltage outage. Thats what i was told when i buy this stupid Sony ericsson P990i !!!! I should haf listen to one of the forumer Docpalm (if not mistaken) and get the Dopod or O2

A modern phone would use Bluetooth for syncing and file transfer. Why carry another cable?

I'm very happy with my P990. It's a wonderful phone, only a bit short of memory, but the latest firmware upgrade fixed it. The learning curve was a bit steep, but once you get used to it, it's actually very intuitive. I can do more things at the same time, and faster, on the P990 than on any other phone I've owned. With a big memory card, it's actually quite a decent MP3 player as well....

I will never get a Windows Mobile phone again. They are complete crap, hangs all the time, and very unuserfriendly. You can feel all the time it's an American PC dinosaur trying to get into phone business...they just don't get it.... As for the Dopods also the hardware is clunkily built.

Sorry you can't charge the phone battery with the usb cable for this model..

BTW the usb port is a standard miniUSB connector instead of Pop-port (used by Nokia in almost all previous models). The advantages are more than obvious: any cable, even a digital camera one will be enough to establish a connection between Nokia 6300 and a computer - for exchanging files etc.

The miniUSB connector is protected by a solid cap that fits so perfectly and holds so firmly, that you may have difficulty locating it and opening it (it's at the bottom to the right of the battery charger connector. Opening the cap is a rather problematic process ( you need a screwdriver with small head - your finger nails won't do! ) and it could really create difficulties - you may feel so frustrated that you are tempted to break the cap and leave the usb connector exposed! I nearly did!

It is not suitable for people who spend most of their times outdoors in noisy areas. The phone ringing is not loud enough. You may configure the phone for active voice clarity. This makes (according to the blurb)the phone conversations more audible in noisy environments. It is okay for office use.

Besides the above caveats, it is still an exceptionally good phone. It has a brilliant screen - great to view if you're a themes freak! Price is also reasonable and it is very light. Hope I didn't put you off from considering a buy option...

Cheers!

I bought the phone yesterday, and Fonzie, you're right about the USB port - took me awhile to figure out how to open the cover.

I haven't figured out if it can charge with the usb port. I plugged the usb cable in but I think it's looking for a software that came in the box. Since I have not installed the software yet, I cannot say if it will charge. I'm not into the fancier features of the phone (i don't listen to music on headphones, don't mms, don't have much use of many other things except perhaps emergency email when necessary). Thot I could do without the software since synch-ing is not that important to me as my pda handles most of my organisation stuff. but it looks I still need to install the software.

My current usb charger cable does not work as the 'head' on the phone end is too big. (meant for older model of phones). Will try to source for the right charging cable (if there is such a thing).

This is turning out to be an adventure of some kind for me. (I know: sounds like I need to get a life! perhaps when the kids have grown up).

.. Please don't be so liberal in using laptop USB for cup warmers and charging phones.. .

True true... the USB ports have been known to get fried permanently. Especially if you main cucuk and cabut... even USB HDD cables have known to "display" surge warnings when you poke one too many devices in the port.... :p Anyway, safest way to remove a device from a USB is to first disable/disconnect from the taskbar...

Better safe than sorry...

Sorry you can't charge the phone battery with the usb cable for this model..

Dude... got gatal and did a search... and found out this info... 6300 is listed by Nokia as compatible model to be charged via USB. Pretty sure can find generic USB chargers at LowYatt or similiar places...

USB Charger Cable DKE-2 For Nokia 6300 N73 N95 N80 N70

ps. Check Summit USJ Ground Floor or 2nd Floor first before driving all the way to KL... it's not LowYatt but then again... you never know!

I bought an original (not AP) but the box does not contain the adapter ;-(

I'll try to make the time to explore the stores. But first, let me install the software first ..... another thing to add to my To Do list.

Hi libra - I bought the mini USB to USB cable from Giant USJ a few months back for below RM10.00. No problem using it until today.

(But first, you need to download the PC suite software from Nokia webpage)

It is right at the entrance, at the rack selling the PC accessories :)

It is in Giant USJ itself. The cable is put in 'see through plactic bags' & are hung on the display rack. Make sure you get the correct one.

The mini USB to USB cable can be used to hook up Nokia 6300 to a PC via the USB socket. (Take note that the connection output from the phone is smaller than the normal USB connector. That's why you will need the adaptor cable)

I installed the Nokia PC Suite software and plugged my phone through the USB.

Unfortunately, it does not charge. :-(

It does allow be to backup, tranfer files, synch, etc but what I wanted most is to charge my phone.

I believe I need another cable - from USB on the PC to the PC charger port. I checked at a few phone shops but they said they don't carry it. They don't even sound interested to sell me something as they kinda gave me the 'go away' look instead of offering to order it for me.

Hi ginaphan .. just out of curiosity, why are you not charging using the supplied charging adaptor directly ? Is it because of different AC 110 - 240 voltage

Willi

The reason I need this USB charging function is because I travel a lot and each time, my notebook comes with me. It just simplifies everything when I don't have to pack the charger.

After weeks of visiting telephone shops, and asking and asking around, I finally found a shop in PJ Digital Mall that sells the Nokia Charger Adapter CA-44 that Sly mentioned. It's a 'big head' to 'small head' kind of adaptor. It costs me RM40. Problem now solved.

Extra bonus for using the adaptor solution - I can also use my old car charger now. :-)

The funny thing is that most shops have never heard of charging the phone with USB. They give me this funny look like such things never existed. I was about to ask my brother in the US to order the cable for me already!

Anyway, guys - thanks for all the help!

hi ginaphan - be careful. Heard before that charging thru the car power socket is rather risky because of its irregular current supply, which may damage your phone. Any specialist here can verify this point

Not sure anymore about anything

I just started the USB charging and twice it said that the "charger was not supported" after about 1 minute. but the third time I re-plugged it in, it is still OK........It's been charging for about 15 minutes now.

Looks like I need to test this for a longer time to really, really know for sure. I think the unstable power from the usb is the cause. (Sigh)

Thot I had better update you guys incase some of you want more to do the same thing.

I won't be using this regularly - only for travel. Hope it will be OK.
