View Full Version : War of the Billboards at the Summit Junction

I drive by the Summit Junction everyday and have been seeing the War of the Billboards for quite sometime now. I think it must be the only Billboard War in the whole of Malaysia.

For those of you who do not know what I mean, it’s the war between the static Giant Supermarket billboard and the Electronic Mydin Supermarket Billboard.

Seems that every time Giant setup special offers on their static billboard, Mydin will counter with a < “WHY PAY MORE?” (with an arrow pointing to the Giant billboard) on their electronic Billboard and offers the same item at a reduced price.

I wish that Giant would also get an Electronic display and really let the WAR of the Billboards begin.

Maybe if you are not too busy with the traffic jam at the Summit Junction, have a good look.

Err...sorry buddy...looking at billboards is not Orchi's cuppa tea.

Coz Orchi would be too busy looking at cool chicks in sleek cardi...:p

I find the billboard war most entertaining ... hehe! Tho for the life of me, I can't figure out why Giant is not doing anything to counter it by, easily, upgrading theirs to an electronic version too ...

But anyway, retail ethics have taken a dive at Giant ... their market produce is not as fresh as it was pre-Mydin days (not that it was that fantastic, to begin with) ... and their special offers are advertised in name only ... 'cos when you ask for it, they will tell you tall tales ... ranging from stock not arrived, stock finished, mis-communication with marketing/import company etc ... so much so that I have given up looking for the section/store manager to say my piece!

So, while I idle my car engine, I might as well enjoy the billboard entertainment!

Both are crap and treat every customer like a thief...so why bother?

...apart from the pollution of billboards really have gone overboard...

was shopping at giant last sunday and my, oh my, their stocks, or rather lack of them, are appalling! :rolleyes:

wanted to buy a bottle of 510gm chunky peanut butter but lady's choice was sold out of stock and skippy has only the creamy ones!

the stuff said that new stocks are coming later... heard this same line much much earlier when mydin started operations! wifey also mentioned that certain foodstuffs were not fresh.

looks like it's c4 from now on.

i thought i was the only one that found the war interesting. There were ways that giant fought back using it's static billboard. What i found funny was they'd advertise their own Brand of product so that Mydin couldn't do the same because it was simply Giants products. i'm just waiting to see more haha..

i think this is a healthy competion that would benefit the consumers at large..let them slug it out.

Lets hope these billboards don't crash down and cause public damage..thats my only concern.

They should compete on customer service instead of billboards.

Billboards are uglifying our country.

I think both Giant and Mydin are just too busy with their Billboard War and they are forgetting what their main objective is. They should actually have a war on who have fresher goods, better service, etc.. A few cents differences in prices is not benefiting anyone.

Sorry its sidetracking but relevant to the billboard adverts.

Talking about fresher foods..especially vegetables and fish, both these s'marts are LOUSY!..ESPECIALLY GIANT (I think I'll brand Carrefour as BAD also) .. in range, selection and price. USJ/Subang people are taken for a ride..LONG TERM! I believe they can do better, but its convinced me to me they aren't bothered. People still buy by the trolleys.

I now market at PJ old town wet market for fish, vege and fresh meat. I even get FRESH (unlike the semi frozen packs) wanton mee at 30 sen each,... never mind the toll..but its savings galore + good Banana leaf food there too!.

Do agree i dont go to s'markets for fresh foods or for their service. Almost all the workers are aliens and cant speak our language and afterall you are suppose to help yourself, self service otherwise shop elsewhere..like in the wet markets.

Just to let you know, most vegetable stalls at PJ Old town wet market ARE manned by foreigners, Bangladeshi's or Indians..but they do speak sufficient BM for any successful transaction. Man!..times have changed.. when I was a kid, used to follow mum to the Central Market KL during weekends. Semua ADA!.. even imported cheeses..but the place was FILTHY... typical!.even the smelliest cheese is perfume!.

mpsj is the approving authority for the billboards. generally, electronic screens are not allowed on fixed billboards and thats the reason why giant could not 'fight back'. so, it begs the question, why the special 'waiver' for mydin?? :rolleyes:
