Najib's comment (http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2007/4/3/nation/17326432&sec=nation)

Do we agree with his comments? A few years back, I used to audit a few government bodies; and in one instant I did the audit for an East Coast local authority (I wouln't name it but here's a hint: it has ISO9000 certification ;) ). In their stock-take audit time schedule; if I take out the time for taklimat, tea break, cigratte break, lepak break, etc etc their actual time for doing their work is only 3 hours.

In case anybody jump at me for bad-mouthing a government body, please note that it happened a few years back and may not reflect their current work culture.

I am wondering: Do civil servants need to actually work longer hours to increase productivity or work more efficiently to increase productivity? I believe that by adding 3 hours of office time that correspond to only (say) 30 mins of productivity is a waste of time.

I would rather they put their full effort during their normal working hours...that should make everyone happy.

There is no necessity to work longer hours/overtime or is that just another ploy for them to be paid for the overtime?

BUT then how can you expect our Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Seri Timbalan Perdana Menteri to know that? His only claim to fame is that he coined the phrase "GLOCAL" but unfortunately that term was used even back in the mid-90s in some HBR articles....
