Err buddies...following up to the thread topic (http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showpost.php?p=218039&postcount=1) which Orchi started...Orchi has received some positive feedbacks from fellow forumers of this webforum...to initiate a donation drive as soon as possible...to collect funds for purchase n supply of sundry items that are constantly needed by The Home for disabled children in Taman Megah SS24 Petaling Jaya...

But before Orchi begins...Orchi wishes to get as much feedbacks as possible in the forum to see whether we should work further on this initiative...either on a add-hoc basis...or monthly basis...quarterly basis or half yearly basis...?

Your feedbacks are most welcomed...TQ.

Oh btw...we have done a similar donation drive before...with the immense help of our dear Patrick Tan...who volunteered to keep track of the bank account for the donation drive to offer emergency assistance to the accident victim Miss. Alicia Ngiam... (http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showthread.php?t=9386&page=1&pp=15&highlight=ngiam)previously.

Orchi believes we could do likewise for the Home of disabled children in Taman Megah PJ...

I've got good health for the most part, altho I'm far from fit. But those children are disabled, and they might never regain good health ever again thruout their lives, and some probably, are disowned by their parents or have no one to call their own.. Orchi you're right, even a small deed goes a long way.... So yup, I believe I can help out too, in whichever way I can.

While I respect and salute your efforts to organize a donation drive for the particular Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-Kanak Cacat, perhaps it might be better for individuals to do something on their own.

For example, as soon as I am well enough, I am going to visit my friend who's a senior management guy in A. Clouet, marketer of Ayam Brand sardines and baked beans, and asked to buy all the dented stuff every month or so and deliver them to this place. I might even visit another friend to sponsor a daily bread delivery plan. 150 loaves of the Sure Value 630g per month (5 loaves per day) = RM285 and the bread (large economy loaves) would be delivered fresh every morning.

Wait till I get well, soon!

Hi Sentinel, do get well soon.

That's a good idea for those who want to do something on their own. For the rest who do not have time to make personal visits but want to contribute, I believe Orchi or Patrick can help to procure and deliver the goodies to the home.

Just a suggestion..

Collect the money and supply them monthly (for a year) of food and medicines what ever we collected. Tell the grocery to deliver to them on a monthly basis. As for medicine, get the local subang clinic to subsidize... ie. Dr Chen :D

If Patrick is the "collector" :D I pledge RM100 :) he will know how to collect from me.

With RM1,500 may I suggest we get about 1,500 cans of Sardines and 1,500 cans of Baked Beans, enough supply for 6 months already. I know someone who is willing to sell these at 50 sen a can because we are doing charity work.

May I suggest we all drop in to this place on Sunday, 15th April 2007 @ 8.30am and bring the other stuff we all wanted to give like cooking oil, pampers, detergent, bathing soap, and even sarongs and pyjamas....

If there are enough of you popping on that day, I will try and serve breakfast of Fruit Cakes, Swiss Rolls and Chocolate Chip Cookies for 300 people on that day itself, what say you guys?

Ok, ok...with bruder Orchi's constant reminder, I finally found my savings ac. So for those who want to bank in directly, may use this ac:

xxxxxxxxx

I couldnt update the account because the Bank's system was down. I will hence take it that anything banked in from April 2007 will be for this worthy cause. I will top up whatever total amount banked in to the hundred. If there is no objection, I would like to close this drive on the 10 April, so that I can update and tabulate the total amount latest by the 12 or 13 April, and hand the amount over to bruder Orchi latest 14 April so that he can coordinate the activities with bruder Sentinel on 15 April 2007.

Attached herewith is the final page from my account to show the last balance.

Orchi.. steam running out from our forummers or what... :( Mebbe you could also pass the hat out at the TT session this coming Friday.

Me will be in Malacca for Good Friday so cannot come la... :( But can I see you on Thursday. I also wanna donate a bottle of 1999 Taylors Carbenet Sauvignon from my collection. You can auction that too... it is worth at least RM200!

PLUS-I will give the highest donor here, a bottle of my prized South African Fleur du Cap Carbenet Sauvignon. So far, Peter and Ewen is in the running... :D Hope woof! woof! gets a sip too....

I wanna beat you up... :D The bottle is suppose to be auctioned at the TT session la... Now you gonna have to start the bidding at the TT session @ RM250... *LOL*

I have already reserved a bottle of Fleur du Cap Carbenet Sauvignon for the highest donor here... so don't confuse the thread/forummers. :p

Some info for those bidding for this bottle on Fridays' TT session. A winner with 8 medals to prove...

1999 St Andrews - Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine Colour
An attractive, bright hue of medium to dark ruby red.

Wine Bouquet
Attractive, lifted varietal aromas of black cherry, cassis, mint and faint eucalypt all intermingle to give complexity. The nose is ripe and enticing with oak elements of chocolate and cocoa filling out the bouquet.

Wine Palate
A rich wine with a dense, concentrated ripe fruit flavours of plum and cherry. Fine tannins, which are strong and long on the palate marry well with some quality French oak giving hints of cedar and tobacco to finish.

Suggested Food Matching
Rich game or beef dishes. Try venison or beef Wellington. Ideally suited to a cheese platter of mature vintage or pungent blue vein.

Critics Notes
“Pure black cherry. Chocolate, cocoa, soft acids. It seems very drinkable on its own and very impressive. It handles itself very well with food. Same ultra dark cherry fruits, same milk and baking chocolate finish. The tannins do soften but they do not fall apart. The acid stays. This is a winner.” Gerhard Ziemer (USA), Sydney International Wine Competition 2002, Top 100 Wines.

“Ripe, fruit nose. Very dense palate. That lovely ripeness was very full of flavour and had excellent tannins. That lovely ripe fruit came through with the food. It had great length, weight and wonderful tannin structure. An excellent combination.” Brent Marris (NZ), Sydney International Wine Competition 2002, Top 100 Wines.

Awards to Date

 2002 Adelaide Wine Show~TROPHY~Best Consumer Cabernet

 2002 Sydney International Wine Competition~BLUE GOLD MEDAL

Err buddies...in case some of you may have missed it...

The late Mr. Manikumar Kanan...himself was a Polio-handicapped person...he would have needed n relied on crutches in order to even stand up n walk...

"The late Manikumar, himself a disabled, was the founder, director, manager, fundraiser and driver of Pusat Penjagaan Kanak-kanak Cacat Taman Megah in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. He tragically died in an accident in April this year while on his way to sell tickets for a fund raising campaign for the Home."

Details on the Fleur Du Cap that is going to the winner...

Cabernet Sauvignon 2000

Terroir
Climate, soil, altitude and slope orientation are selected to capture as much varietal character as possible. The climate is mild with south and east facing slopes offering protection against late afternoon sun. Cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean ensure rich, slow growing crops. Soils are predominantly medium-textured and well drained with good water holding capacity.

The vineyards (Viticulturist: Bennie Liebenberg)
The grapes were selected from vineyards in the Stellenbosch area. The 15 year-old vines produced a yield of 6-8 tons/ha. The 5-wire hedge system was used for trellising and pest and disease control was implemented according to South African IPW standards.

The winemaking
The grapes were handpicked between 23,5º and 24º Balling at the end of February. In the cellar the juice fermented on the skins for 7 days at 28ºC. After malolactic fermentation the wine was matured in wood for 18 months – 35% in new French oak casks, 5% in new American oak casks, 5% in second-fill casks and 55% in third-fill casks.

Winemaker’s comments (Winemaker: Coenie Snyman)
“The wine is dark ruby garnet in colour with an abundance of ripe fruit and herbaceous oak spices. Medium to full on the palate it shows red berry fruit and delicate vanilla flavours backed by a soft and elegant tannin structure”, says winemaker Coenie Snyman.

Food pairings
Ideal with game meat and birds. A perfect accompaniment to hearty stews, strong-flavoured herbs and cheeses.

Analysis
Residual sugar 1,78 g/l
Extract 30,5 g/l
Alcohol 13,82 vol %
Total acidity 5,85 g/l

Yes...you may bank in your contribution to this Maybank account nos:

Err...Orchi visited the SS24 Taman Megah Home today during lunch hour today...n managed to take some pictures of the centre and its residents...which would be posted in this thread...later.

Orchi also spoke briefly to the current President Mrs. Kanan while she was holding n taking care of a baby in her arms...n also briefed her assistant about what we are doing here for the children of the Home...

Later Orchi met with USJ27Resident to hand him the letter n a profile of the centre...appealing for corporate donations which is signed by Mrs. Kanan...herself.

Sorry to break about the sad news that a young resident of the Home...the little 3 year old Gan Yong Han has succumbed to her illness(which caused her head to be swollen) 1 week ago on the 28th March 2007...the sad news pierced thru Orchi's heart...

With much regrets that Orchi didn't get the chance to bid her farewell...

For those who wishes to make direct monetary donations and contributions to the Home...kindly do so as soon as possible...

Orchi, the kid with the head swollen, actually i met him before during my company went there. I notice the smile in his face when he see everyone want to play with him... even some of my colleague cried upon seeing his condition...

there is even some children had to be 'tied' up as he can get aggressive... even one kid had to be chained up with padlock..upon seeing it, i got really angry and sounded the helper there..how can chained up a boy using a metal chain and a metal padlock..

the news that orchi brought up also had make me sad... :( :(

My bank account statement as at 31 Dec 2006 read RM134.42. Total balance on 12 April read 3710.42. Hence total donations received was RM3576.00 (3710.42 - 134.42). I have added in my contribution of 124 to round up the total to RM3700 as promised to Orchi. Hence the account now read as follows:

Total Donations from Bank Account......................RM 3700.00
Total cash donations received via Orchi................RM 1371.00
To be received from wine auction from Sentinel......RM 775.00

TOTAL DONATIONS RECEIVED:............RM 5846.00

Would be glad to take any questions, queries etc.

Err buddies...Orchi has the following in mind...n would like to invite further feedbacks from you the contributors...to see if Orchi's suggestions would be appropriate or not...

1. On the last week of each month beginning with this month of April...Orchi would pay a visit to the Home...to ascertain which are the necessities(with longer shelf life preferably) that they could be lacking for that month...(this is to avoid providing items that they may sufficiently have already thus creating over stocking problems as the Home may lack proper storage space also)

2. Once the list has been compiled...a copy of which would be given to the caretaker to later...keep track of what Orchi could possibly source for...n what they are supposed to receive from us specifically for that month...pending follow ups etc.

3. The same list would be distributed to the suitable grocery provisions wholesaler...n suppliers of the other items in the list...who could supply according from what they carry in stocks...n be able to DELIVER the necessary items directly to the Home respectively...without incurring any higher or unreasonable delivery costs...(as this is for charity...Orchi would do best to convince them NOT to charge extra)

4. Once the costs of purchases(pre-negotiated to the cheapest possible prices) can be identified n finalized...cash bills would be issued by the relevant suppliers...n the Home would be notified of the intended deliveries.

5. Orchi would then obtain from Patrick the exact amounts needed to make payments to those cash bills from all the suppliers respectively...n Orchi would follow up with each n every suppliers...to get them to deliver the supplies to the Home...asap.

6. They are appealing for public contributions of foodstuffs...medicines...personal hygiene...apparels n household items...that the centre would need on daily weekly n monthly basis...such as...

Onions, Garlic, Potatoes, Tomato/Chili/Oyster/Soya sauce, Cooking oil, Dhal, Curry powder, Herbs for cooking, Dried Chili, Ikan Bilis, Udang kering, Sugar, Salt, Pepper, Sardine, Cereals, Marmite, Milk Powder, Milo, Tea/Coffee, Condensed milk, Glucose, Rice, Instant noodles, Bee hoons, etc etc etc.

Washing Soup Powder, Dish washing detergent, Floor cleaner/detergent, disinfectant, Clorox, Medicated soap, Shampoo, Talcum powder, Tooth paste 250g, Baby Oil, Lotion, Insecticide sprays, mosquito coils, Rubbish bags, Dish wash sponge, Mop/Broom stick, Dust Bin, Hand rubber gloves, etc etc etc.

Air Badak, Panadol Activfast 500, Listerine, Vicks, Cough syrups, Epillim Tablets, Epillim Syrup, Paracetamol, Fucidin H, Cerobic Cream, Tinea skin solution, Carzepin 200mg, Chlorpromazine 100mg.

Sanitary pads, Diapers Size Adult - Small (18" - 29"), Underwears(for children both sexes Size 1 to 12).

http://www.usj.com.my/bulletin/upload/showpost.php?p=218034&postcount=80

7. The MONTHLY bills of purchases n payments made for the necessary items...NOT limited to the above...would then be published in this forum for transparency sakes...UNTIL such time...when the POOL of the money collected from this donation drive...has been appropriately expensed...n accounted for...

Orchi welcomes in here or by PM...any feedbacks that you may have to possibly improve...upon the above suggestions...

Hey Orchi, I remember we use to sell EVERYDAY Milk Powder in 25kg bags to the estates in Renggam, Layang-Layang and Simpang Renggam areas during my days with Nestle. They were very economical as they were directly imported without going thru any repacking. Why not contact Nestle Malaysia directly and maybe even ask them to supplu FOC some bags per month? Err buddies...Orchi found out this morning that a 15 months old male toddler who is blind...was very recently found abandoned by his parents at the front gate of the Taman Megah Home...

When the news of the incident broke...relatives got the toddler's parents to approach the Home...Orchi was told that the parents who are in their early twenties...were arrested by the Police.

Toddler's name is Patrick...he is presently being taken under the care of the Home...while the welfare of Patrick are still being sorted out by the relevant parties...

This was not the first time...toddlers n childrens were found abandoned by their close relatives at the front gate of the Taman Megah Home.

Orchi... Just saw your post on Air Jemuju. Go to any Indian sundry shop and ask for "ommumthani" (ommum water). Yes, it's clear and very effective for tummyaches. And it also tastes bubbly (kononnya like champers la..) I would liken it to kerosene (don't ask how I know what kerosene tastes like). Bleh.

By the end of this month...Orchi would pay the Home a routine visit again.

This time...Orchi would enquire to see if they would have higher priority need for the existing fund that we have obtained recently to repay any mortgage payment to the bank...or they would prefer that rather the fund be utilized to overcome whatever shortages of the food...personal hygiene n household supplies...like the present arrangement.

why need hair gel to be neat n tidy?? just get them each a comb....

I totally disagree with your point-of-view there Sin Leong. The way you wrote and sounded is like those orphans and handicapped children do not deserve the hair gel, as Orchipalar put it to look neat and tidy at school, and since they depend on donation, we should just throw the combs at them....

I came from an ultra-poor family background - there were 8 of us. Still, my Dad made it a point we boys comb our hair with Tancho to attend school. It was necessary then and I think it still necessary now to give these kids some dignity.

I popped by the centre yesterday afternoon just to chat up the children there and smuggled in some Oreo Chocolate Cookies... ha ha ha they now call me Uncle Chocolate, now thats funny! :D

Hey Orchi, I have made some changes to the bread deliveries to the Children's Home at Taman Megah. We will still deliver the 600gm White Sandwich Loaf on Mondays and Wednesdays but we stopped the White Sandwich Loaf 600gm for Fridays. Instead, we are delivering 130 buns every Friday. We will alternate with 130 Kaya Buns, Red Bean Buns, Coconut Buns, Sardine Buns and then rotate again so the children won't get jelak with the White Bread. We will be sending in 3 cartons of OOZY Peanut Butter as well to go with the White Sandwich Loaf. Hope you don't mind the changes made without consulting you nor Mr. Baskin, thought the children would be happier this way. :D

5. Ladies finger
6. Long beans
7. Betola
8. Terung Bulat n Panjang
9. Lobak Putih n Merah
10. Cauliflower
11. Chillies Red n Green

12. Hair Shampoo Rejoice - recommended by doctor cos some of childrens developed dandruff condition

Dear Orchi,

I've been a silent member all this while but an ardent reader of the forum. This is my first post. Been reading your posts either in this thread oand others, and I couldn't help but to notice what a kind soul u have. Would like to help you with the charity drive since I have plenty of time.. He..he I'm actually a full-time posgraduate student and been given a 3 years study leave by my employer. Well actually I'm supposed to be studying 9-5 but i guess a lil bit of charity work is also good "recreation" activity for my brain. Err dear Harmony...Aiyaaa...nice to know somebody is reading what Orchi writes...typo included...n folks get to laugh it out loud...:D :p

Daily the Home cooks about 10kgs of foodstuffs comprising of fresh greens n beans...fish n meat...which they would buy themselves whenever there's a shortage.

So this weekend Saturday...what Orchi would like to do...is to confirm with the Home that Orchi would be sending those required items...on Sunday morning to the Home...which should last them for 1 week or so hopefully.

Buddy Toink77...welcome to the forum...thank you for your kind n encouraging words...n to anyone whom may be keen...you are most welcome to join Orchi...if you are available EARLY on this coming Sunday morning...say at SS15 market by 7:30am.

There we can get almost everything that the Home would need for this round of shopping list of items...to be sent to the Home in SS24 thereafter.

Orchi would send you a PM containing Orchi's cell phone nos. in order for us to keep in touch.

$$$ wise...Orchi would pay the cost of the purchase...n reimburse the same from our dear Patrick(our guardian of the fund for this initiative)...with the receipts during the coming following Friday TT session on the 6th July.

yup. was there from 9.30am - 11.30am. 12pm is the Home's lunch time. met with Baskin n got more details of the Home from him. basically went there to socialize with the kids. i believe by socializing with them, the kids will be less bored n less prone to other behaviourial tendencies.

coincidentally, there was a lady who held her 4Xth bday at the home as well.

most of the kids got balloons n presents instead. it was also attended by her entire family. they also mingled around with the kids.

it takes more than jz a heart to visit them.

Various purchases from SS15 wet market - RM 219.25

Hi, if you don't mind me saying, according to my mom the Home Minister, if you would like to stretch your ringgit, the best place to shop for fresh supplies is pasar malam especially at ss13 on Sunday afternoon (2pm onwards) and on Tuesday evening (4pm onwards). Prices are quite steep at ss15 wet market especially vegetables.

orchipalar
10-09-2007, 02:22 PM
Err buddy...yes your Mom at your home ministry is definitely right about prices of greens at Pasar Malams...would be relatively cheaper.

But the trouble is...Orchi could only spare Sunday morning...or at best Saturday morning in order to do the marketing n delivery the fresh supplies to the Home.

Hopes this shortcoming of Orchi's...is understood.

Fully understood buddy, sorry for being a kepoh.

Glad you appreciate what Orchi is doing is already quite a lot of sacrifice of time, effort and expenses. Besides having to do the "marketing", he often has to drive around and send the stuff to the home. Let's not forget he stays in USJ and no where near Taman Megah. Further, he often has to foot the cost upfront first before making a claim from me and accounting for every sen spent, though I do allow him some cash in advance. Which means he has to find time to spend with me to account and claim for the expenses.

So let's all say a big Thank You to bruder Orchi who is doing such a great job. Thanks Orchi!!

Hi Greenbug, have you seen my PM yet. It's about the buns (of the edible kind :) )Dear Trifecta : Yes, I did receive your PM. The buns are now distributed to the homes on alternate days. On other days, white sandwich loaves and wholemeal loaves are delivered. All these are currently sponsored by me personally.

Since the last time when I offered to ask for sponsorship and sell these like 'time-sharing' basis, there was no taker so I am now footing the whole bill myself (plus the one at Pure Lotus Hospice in Penang). This is all still within my own personal budget of RM1,000 monthly so there isn't any problem at all.

As I have told you thru the PM (and to GTL as well), I cannot collect any monies for these activities from this web-forum, just my personal principle. The best is for you to make donation directly to the one authorized to do so i.e. Patrick and better still go and see the children yourself and bring some tin biscuits (they like the wafer-type in bulk economy tin because most the kids cannot bite or chew properly).

My apologies but I cannot meet with your request, too much trouble my friend.

Err buddies...this problem is not new to the Taman Megah Home...it is one of the many problems faced by the Home in the last 15 years or so...

Housing n caring for more than 128 physically challenged occupants mostly childrens...are never any easy tasks...

But when the main centre n its related homes...are spread along the same row of residential houses...some of the nearby residents would be annoyed by noise n so on...from the high nos. of occupants...

On top of that...there are many visitors n staffs...coming in n out of the Home constantly on daily basis...n also there would be kind visitors n neighbours stopping-by to drop off their contributions...so on n so forth...

Besides that...one of the complaints from their neighbours involves hygiene...mostly arising from the daily routine activities of cooking n washing...at the Home main centre...

“Although the day-care centre operates from 9am to 5pm, there is still noise coming from those living in-house. Cooking is done on the premises and the hygiene of the backyard at the main centre is poor because there is so much rubbish, and residents have taken photographs to prove it,”

http://thestar.com.my/metro/story.asp?file=/2007/9/21/central/18924500&sec=central

Well like Orchi...for those that have since visited the Home...they would realize that...outside of the Home n within...are being kept as orderly n clean...as possible...considering the proportions of the situations...n circumstances that the Home is facing with...

Oh btw...should Orchi be not mistaken...Orchi did see a large dumpster next to the Home...to contain the daily garbage n waste from the Home..

Ahem...but the problem is...the dumpster is ALSO being used by the surrounding neighbours as well...to discard their(complainants?) refuse...

Whatever, but wall mounted fans are relatively expensive and not that durable!True, Patrick. You have been there the last time were there and you could see that there isn't much space to put the floor-standing fans. I suppose the management of the center have analyzed all these. The floor standing fans also pose potential problems and can endanger the kids staying there as you know, some of them are mentally-challenged as well.

When they do get possession of the unit next door, they are going to need some funds for some minor renovations too. Hope Orchi can organize another fund drive.

We (me & my colleagues) now deliver some trans-fat free margarine and kaya (Kaya King from Silver Bird!!!) there twice a month for the kids and other inmates. That save them some money buying them.

Went to the center [with my little daughter and bro Orchi-san] to see for myself the condition of the centre...

My daughter [8 yrs.] is now asking many questions as to why the children are in the conditions as they are... and was visibly moved by their conditions. My intentions were to make her realise how fortunate some of us are and how sometimes life/fate can make things so different for others...

I still cannot accept the facts that
i. some of them were ACTUALLY abandoned by their own families... :(
ii. instead of compassion, some of the neighbors can even accuse the centre of being filthy and overcrowded... fact is, I had walked bare-footed at the centre and dare say that I found the OUTSIDE floors cleaner than some of my friends houses! [later was told that the reason to their actions is because of their self/ personal interests in preserving the value of their properties...]

Please... do find it in your hearts too, to share some of your good fortunes and blessings for the centre - if you can...

My respect and prayers also goes out to those volunteers that help run the place... just don't know where these people find the strength to do it everyday!

Here's the bank account details where the previous collection of fund for the Home was deposited...

(censored by Patrick )

After you have made the additional contribution into the account...kindly post the deposited amount in here...in order for buddy Patrick to update the account.

Err buddies...regret that Orchi has not been able to update this thread...as often as Orchi would have wished for...

But since February 2008...a couple of forumers have been kind n generous to have taken the initiatives at their own personal expenses to attend to the necessities of the Home...during Orchi's long absence...due to busier work schedules elsewhere...

Orchi owes to the kind forumers whom had wished to remain anonymous...with a thousand thanks...

Just now...Orchi received a call from the Home...seeking for further assistance to supply fresh vegetables n meat supplies that the Home would need on this coming weekend...for which Orchi would be around to handle it.
