View Full Version : Toyota Vios vs Honda City

Hi, friends, i am having a tough time to decide between buying a Toyota Vios and Honda City. Any ideas? My test drive seisson put me back to where I began:

1) I dislike the display console of the Vios which is at the middle. A feeling of driver not in control. I instinctively dislike the petrol gauge LED.

2) Honda City only came with silver and dark grey (almost black). Both colors are at the bottom of my color choice. What a lack of color scheme for such a brilliant car design.

Any other comments such as road-handling, air-cond, engine noise etc that can help me make decision?

Thanks.

Atom, am having the same dilemma. Want a City with dark fabric with the foldable back seats but neither the Vtec nor the IDSI version has this exact combo.

Other wish list:
1. Ipod ready head unit

Conclusion, wait a little longer....something might turn out with this years expected new car offerings.

thanks totoro, am aware of that too. Based on the latest report it is slightly bigger than the current Vios but i don't think its size is on par with the current City.

i hope the Belta would include:
1. rear disc brakes with ABS & EBD & BA
2. Ipod ready
3. additional safety harness for baby seat (Latch system)
4. dual airbags

Anyway, will see it in flesh before commenting further.

Boy i love the Mazda3...Zoom zoom zoom

If I am buying a new car, my main concern will be the safety, mechanical, size and maintenance aspects. The cosmetics will be my last concern but that does not mean it is unimportant. KelvC listed some necessary features in modern day cars and I will give priority to those features over cosmetics anytime. The Vios has a reputation for reliability and low maintenance verses Honda's vogue and performance image

I use a Vios in Thailand and I am happy with it except for some "odds and ends" that tend to "unstick" themselves because it is assembled in Thailand. For the same reason, most Singaporeans prefer Honda as the quality of fitting and assembly is better. I am not sure where the Malaysian Vios come from but if it is from Thailand, I will consider it a minus factor. It will not necessary persuade me from buying it but will definitely make me take a good look at Honda.

I was in such situation 2 mths ago ... Swift, Vios and City is the order. I got the City instead. Overall, its the space/size of the interior that decides. Took the car to Kuala Terengganu and it only cost me RM70!! Thats great and clocked 550KM for that. Patrick was rite, the service is EXCELLENT, even better than the Toyota center in sect 14 (or 13?) PJ. My personal opinion, go with City and you will not regret. BTW, mine is IDSI not VTec ....

btw, how much is the current market price, OTR price ar?
and any difference of the current edition compared to the fatty edition few years back?

2 years old for both models are selling for RM60-70k. overpriced 2nd hand prices if you ask me.

Swift CKD (coming real soon in April) is said to sell soon for RM64,XXX. Or at least that was the price tag put on the Swift by a dealer in IOI Puchong, so I heard... Well, nothing is confirmed until it's official, so I will wait and see.

I was advised by a non-Honda, non-Toyota salesman to generally avoid CVVT engines (found in the City and Jazz, I was told) because replacements can be very expensive as compared to conventional transmissions. However, no one can really comment on the durability. Hence if it's a brand new car, then this factor may not play an important role in the selection process.

Vios
good:nice exterior looks,good engine,good handling
bad : sucky interior, small, speedo in the middle,1.5E is not worth it

City
Good: Spacious,Nice interior ,nice speedo ,manual shifts on the steering,VTEC very powerful, idsi very good FC

Bad:Ugly exterior(Rear) unless modified with bodykit, ride is quite high,

kevin23, based on your assessment, sounds like the City is a better bet. Like i said highlighted, i would like to have the idsi version with darker interior (kids) with the foldable chairs (or even the Vtec for the matter). Oh, let's not forget the Ipod ready headset too.

Another think i like about the City is the active and passive inbuilt safety feature on the City:

1. ABS & EBD & BA
2. Front & Rear disc brakes
3. Dual airbags.

Oh, if the honeycomb front grill comes in as standard config would be nice :)

Now, could someone tell me what certified safety standard is City confirmed to? i.e. internal / external crash standard, GOA, etc?

My City, after running for almost 80,000km, engine sounds as good as new.
CVT, wonderful transmission for 1.5L small car like City. The manual transmission gives you all the power you want. Speed of 160 km/h anytime. You fall in love with this car especially driving in congested KL. Fuel economy wise, no worry about the fuel hike.

Use synthetic oil, change every 10,000 km, assure you of unnecessary mechanical problem. Transmission fluid every 20,000.00 km.

I still very happy with this car. My next car probably Civic, when I can afford the instalment.

Happy driving.

GreyShadow, this price is just 2 days old from Honda dealers opposite Ikea. OTR price for i-DSI is RM79,780 and for VTEC is RM84,780. But the catch is only three colors available: Satellite Silver Metallic, Alabaster Silver Metallic (another silver) and Nighthawk Black Pearl (almost black). Rainbow has 7 colors and Honda choose black and silver! What are they thinking? Now, I am more inclined to Vios due to lack of color choice of City.

Thanks. Kiwi. The new Vios (thanks chin_wan for the video) is really a looker from outside. Why the salespeople at Toyota kept mum about the new model during my visit? I supposed they want to clear the current stock real fast to get the new model in....

But, again, the speedometer display is still at the center.. what a letdown.. but again, nothing in this world is perfect, right? Just have to settle for 95%..

Even the current City, to me it is almost the type of car I want to own until the salesperson told me there is only silver and black.. sigh..

To me Vios is the better choice considering what Toyota car are made of. Having own one Toyota myself, I find it to be better handling and maintainance compared to other cars. Maybe I am bias but that is the way it is.

I was once toyota supporter, and almost bought a VIOS myself after viewing and test driving. until i sat in my friend's city (who I has always been laughing the outlook of the car but never sat in it), I was sold by its much better interior design and build quality.

Bought an VTEC version 2 yrs ago and thinking that my next one should still be a city.. who else can give me 530km per 36 liters? not many.

Anyone can gives figures on petrol consumption of VIOS for us to make comparison??? Thanks in advance.

I used to think Vios with VVTI engine has to be the most fuel-saving car in its range... seems nobody mentions about that but many have coronated that feature to City... What actually is the Vios average km/L ?

chuinkee
30-03-2007, 09:32 AM
I agree that VTEC is more powerful.

*section below is based on CITY model BEFORE facelift*
However if you read the graph carefully, at 0-3000rpm iDSI has better torque then VTEC. which means better pick-up. at 3000 rpm the car is cruising at around 105KM/hr already. how often do you drive faster than that?

Somemore with untraseat only available in iDSI model now, I will suggest to go for it rather than go for VTEC anytime.

So you might ask, why did I go for VTEC then? well, because I came across that article AFTER i bought it...

Hi Atom,

I'm in the same dillema as you at the moment..however I've been asking around lot as well as reading alot from another forums on Honda City & Toyota Vios...There was this guys who posted a very good question to help us decide which is the best car that can suites you...*I can't remember which site but it answers all my questions*.. :)

My initial choice was Vios but after careful consideration and test drive..CITY has got much to offer in terms of space, FC, interiors & technology...

I've just called up the sales guy and there might be a promotion coming up next month..so will wait and see....

Thanks jwyc28. The links are very informative. Looks like there are more supporter for the City from the other forums as well. The positive opinions seemed heavy towards the City. Ya, at least there is another over there lamented about the central siting of Vios speedometer panel. I can see that most Vios owners take this feature as something not a big deal but for me, I instinctively find this feature a big minus point. Er.. City promotion next month means.. 2 more days..? I will pay them a visit again then. Hopefully they will give away RM2000 plus free V-Kool.

The CVT Transmissions for the Honda City requires the original type of transmission fluid. Don't go for any of the other 'normal' gear fluid. This is no joke as many of the problems some owners of the City had are because of this. Other than this, i'll take the City (iDSI and VTEC) anytime. I own an iDSI by the way.

It is the sign of the time when we are all talking about buying city or vios when in the 80s, our fathers was talking about buying civic or corolla? Either we as a nation has regresses since then or we are becoming impoverish? Is it any wonder that the Kancils and the MyVis are ruling the road nowadays when previously it is the corollas, civic and the nissans? Most of the cars on the road now are below the 1000cc whereas in the 80s it is either the 1.3 or the 1.5 variant. So it is sad when a nation become as such since the arrival of you know which marquee.

We got our second hand 1.6 2005 model last year April at RM61K. Worth buying !

Folks,

The Honda sales had contacted me 2 days ago, here are their latest promotion (not a bad deal):-

1) 2.38% interest rate up to 7 years +
2) RM 1000 cash rebate
3) Free petrol voucher = RM 300 (For Honda City cars)

http://www.honda.com.my/

I challenged the sales guy about why Toyota Vios is giving so good packages (RM 3888 rebate) with 2.5% interest rate. As I expected, there will be a replacement for Vios sometime end of this year (Toyota Belta) and they have alot of stock need to be cleared...

As for City cars, Honda don;t really keep much stock and made to order and based on demand. On the plus side are their technology - the CVT engine..

I think it's a good buy if anyone want to trade in their old car.
