Spore Foreign Minister George Yeo announced in the Spore Parliament yesterday that the National University of Spore (NUS) would be conferring an honorary doctorate on the Sultan of Johor when he visits the republic next month.

The Spore govt has also proposed the setting up of a Spore consulate in JB, and this has been welcomed in principle by Msian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar, according to the Spore Straits Times (http://straittimes.asia1.com.sg) today.

George Yeo said that Spore-Msia bilateral ties are "good and getting better".

Much as what Hishamuddin said in the interview with the Spore Straits Times, as reported yesterday.

 wow....I wondered what the Sultan would rumbled about this time after his infamous speech at the SJER launch previously

The Spore govt is pragmatic, if nothing else.

And always, always focused on the long-term.

Of course, they would have "informally" cleared this with the Msian govt 1st!

And Spore is one of the favourite shopping destinations for the Johor Royal Family! :D

Which is why no one is much bothered when the Johor MB shoots off his mouth! ;)

ofcos, it is a well-orchestrated PR exercise by the SG govt, and a delicate manouvre for a piece of the Iskandar cake...

Note how adroitly the Spore govt has played this.

They have got Pak Lah and Umno Youth (Hishamuddin) basically "on side".

With the awarding of an NUS honorary doctorate to the Sultan of Johor, they have the Johor Palace "on side" too.

With two strokes, they have "marginalised" the Johor MB!

Brilliant! :D

Yup, Dr J, u are right. The game is very much afoot (to quote Sherlock Holmes)!

But I would suggest that Johor's domestic politics (almost entirely driven by Johor Umno) will be put on 2nd priority by a PM who is desperate to make the IDR a success. And anyone who stands in the way of this will be "sidelined", "marginalised" or "removed from the game".

In a way, I pity the Johor MB. He is caught between a rock (the federal govt) and a hard place (the Johor Palace).

And protocol demands that he (the MB) will have to accompany the Sultan of Johor when HRH visits Spore next month and gets his honorary doctorate from NUS. What to do, mah, but grit your teeth and smile for the cameras!

The Johor MB was the first ever Dean of the Faculty of Economics & Adminstration, University Malaya, in 1979 wihout a Ph.D or even an associate professorship... by-passing a long line of more qualified academicians to the prestigious position. He should count his lucky stars to have come this far!

These folks who were around at the time but did not get appointed were :

Dr. Chee Peng Lim
Dr. Harcharan Singh Khera
Dr. Sieh Lee Mei Ling
Dr. Gregory Thong Tin Sin
Dr. Jomo Sundram
Dr. Dunston Ayadurai

You go figure.....

I am curious - has NUS awarded honorary doctorates in the past to any member of the Malaysian royalty?

To the best of my knowledge, I don't think so. Not even to HRH Sultan Azlan Shah who is a qualified lawyer and a former judge.

So, why now to HRH the Sultan of Johor?

Johor was once part of the Johor sultanate, I think the Lees there should, instead, make the Sultan the King, much like the Queen of England to the Aussie. Why not?

In Malaysia, senior position in a public uni. is viewed as a political appointment. It is the party boss's way of rewarding their "cronies" the good job. It has nothing to do with a person's brain or even credentials. See who get to become the MU V.C.?
