View Full Version : Apparent incompatibility between Norton Internet Security 2006 & Internet Explorer 7

I have been having problems with Norton Internet Security 2006 on my home PC ever since I upgraded from IE6 to IE7.

With IE7, while I am surfing the Web, I get the messages "Norton Internet Security has encountered a problem and needs to close" or "Norton AntiVirus Scanner Module has encountered a problem and needs to close".

The Norton icon then disappears from the bottom taskbar, which means that the Internet Security is not running. I have to re-start my PC to bring Norton Internet Security back online.

This happens several times a day.

I contacted the Microsoft Tech Support hot line in Spore and all the tech guy could suggest is (a) de-instal Norton Internet Security and re-instal it or (b) de-instal Norton Internet Security 2006 and instal the 2007 version, and see if the problem happens again. He said that there could be some "incompatibility" between Norton IS 2006 and IE7.

I couldn't contact anyone on the Symantec Tech Support hot line in Spore, after being put on hold for more than 15 minutes!

You bet I am mad with the lousy tech support from both Microsoft and Symantec!

Anybody out there encountered this problem and managed to fix it?

Hi, Mr Sahadevan. Thanks for the advice.

Unfortunately, I couldn't download the upgrade to get from Norton Internet Security 2006 to the 2007 version. Kept getting an alert:

"There was a problem checking your computer. Please make sure you have cookies and javascript enabled, then return to the previous page and try again."

Any suggestions?

In the meantime, I am still getting Norton Internet Security 2006 shutting down. The latest error message is:

"Symantec User Session has encountered a problem and needs to close".

The error report contains the following info:

App Name: ccapp.exe
AppVer: 104.0.13.2 ModName: cc140.dll
ModVer: 104.0.13.2 Offset: 0001f101

Does this make any sense to you?

Cheers.

How about totally unistall out your Norton and reinstall from scratch again... it could probably during your upgrade of IE6 to IE7, some shared file was overwritten.

That's what the Microsoft tech support guy suggested. But it's a pain in the neck. Might as well stump out the cash for Norton IS 2007 (S$109) and instal it. If that doesn't work, upgrade from Windows XP to Vista!

This is where I appreciate the elegant simplicity and robustness of the Mac OS!

Check whether cookies and Javascript are enabled on your browser? and try again. Also have a go at the Norton's Autofix Tool or manually look to diagnose the problem here
