Can anybody recommend a reliable person to tar the front of my house with black tar ?
It is the area just in front of the gate.
Most contractor I contacted only put in cement and did a bad job. :(

There is no contractor, my friend. They come around in a small lorry on some Sundays and they ring your bell if they think you need to tar your front drive way... :p

I think to get someone to Tar a small portion is rather difficult.
Tar need to be in hot condition ala burning hot and it might only be cost effective to tar a larger portion of road.
Contractors may not have such dedication, thus, a cement mixture is rather feasible.

Well, the tar must be "hot".
Usually, those who come with a lorry and "SELL" you those tar are of lower quality. Why ? cause the tar are left overs from some project site. haha
the correct way should be to also have a "steam-roller" machine to heat up the tar. do you see any? if not, then the finished product will not be that good.
any contractors here ?
*P/S - looks like munity posted 6 minutes earlier than me :) I could have posted about the same time but I was disconnected and waited for the wireless connection to be re-connected

Ha ha ha, most important is we share the same view.
And your steam-roller is most correct also, its just that I lazy to go into that area. No, I'm not a contractor :D

Basic fact is that the tar must be hot - otherwise, it would not bind the stones in the asphalt mixture that is laid. Good luck if you patronise those small lorries that come house-to house in the evening. The initial job looks great but you can be assured that the asphalt will deteriorate with usage and time as the stones get eroded away due to the lack of binding from the tar.
If anyone is thinking of re-doing their driveway, do think about using interlocking bricks. When we got our drive-way renovated, we used the existing interlocking paving bricks from the original driveway for the part outside the front gate. This was a decision we never regretted because while our neighbour's tarred drive way deteriorated, our interlocking brickwork is still intact and sturdy. It is even better than poured concrete.

An interesting article to read on how people can "cheat" by claiming that they are tarring the road.

I agree. My neighbour called on one of these lorry to tar the front of their house. In just 2 weeks, the "tar" starts to loosen up and reveal the white sand / stones underneath. Worse of all, even simple act of kicking the tar would dislodge it and reveal the white sand underneath. Very bad quality. I wouldn't recommend getting tar done from these lorries.

In that case, how are people going to get qualified people to tar their place ?

There are contractors who have the right contacts. For example, our friendly DIY member, Allan (ank345) can help you if you need the contact. If you prefer, ask your own house-renovator.

How much has your neighbour offered to pay for such a service...? What time was it done...? How was the weather when the job was being done...? Did your neighbour witnessed how the job was being done...? Was the asphalt hot...or was it cold as the turkey...?

n when not properly done...even the tiled or bricked driveway would pop up in no time also...needing expensive repair works later on...
Apart from ensuring a proper asphalt resurfacing job done...it's important to see if your driveway is prone to water clogging due to poor drainage...or not...as stagnant water would ruin the tarred surface pretty soon...n in which case...the level of the driveway surface should be tarred slightly higher...so water can be drained off easily even in heavy rain...
Orchi has done the same with asphalt on the driveway ONLY once in the last 4 years or so from the similar service provider...aka the small lorry asphalt contractor...n the asphalt on it...is still sticking like...err...'elephant glue' so to speak...even until today.
Err...people should realize...that getting their driveways resurfaced with asphalt...isn't as easy as it looks...n it does take some knowledgeable service providers...aka...the certain small lorry guys who would do the job well...under suitable circumstances...like doing it on a sunny morning/afternoon hours...swept clean n dry driveway...n when the asphalt is steaming HOT...n make sure that the guys do a good compacting job on the newly surfaced asphalt...
Oh btw...do hose down the new 'steaming hot' asphalt surface with plenty of tap water...to cool the surface down asap in order to 'harden' it so to speak.
