In a word, why?

GM has enough problems on it's plate fending off Toyota in the US domestic market. Plus it's finances are not in good shape and it's share price in the US has taken a beating.

Why would it bother looking at acquiring a stake in a pipsqueak like Proton?

Whoever's spearheading this initiative at GM, if it's true, must have been indulging in one too many Happy Hours.

Nobody knows what has been transpired in the acquisition? Maybe it is another good offer with profit guarantee given by our SMART Government just like they have given to those toll operators? No? ;)

GM is aiming for Proton's Tanjung Malim plant, which has state-of-the-art technology. This is a good chance for GM to use this modern facility to penetrate ASEAN. Anyway, I still hope VW partners Proton.

GM is a big companies, even Chevrolet which is selling ok in Malaysia is under GM, Saab etc etc.

Good also if GM take over and produce attractive and reliable car.

As for VW, I am not sure how many VW have been sold in Malaysia, no doubt they make good cars but looks like not so many have been sold in Malaysia.

GM has also had its bond rating down to "junk status" by Standard & Poor. They've also been laying off workers in the droves for the past couple years.

Desperate times call for desperate measures, I suppose.

In my personal opinion, only PSA Peugeot Citroen is worth considering. That's because it is the only company amongst the three without a financial problem. The other two, if the gov. ever, choose, means that the blind man will be guided by another blind man. What's the point?

By the way, the Chevy here is actually a batched Daewoo. That's how they can sell here in Malaysia compared to fully imported Volks from Europe(price cheaper ma). We don't have to compare the quality do we?

Don't you guy heard what Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear Bbc say about GM, "American know nothing about car,they can't built a proper car and the suspension they use are from stone age!" :D

In a word, why? .

Because they probably heard that Proton would sell their assets and asses for another 1 EURO... :p

(... let GM take over Proton... then allow GM to fire, lay off all the Proton workers and suppliers... aiksss!! now its a Mat Salleh's company thats firing (excess?) staff and (lousy?) suppliers??? Blame not the Govt for this company's action... :p

GM = cr*p

Proton = bigger cr*p

GM + Proton = SH|T

I wouldn't say GM is lousy like Proton, just that their having problems with rising costs. Toyota seem to produce cars of similar/higher quality but with lower costs.
