I not gonna be a boss anytime soon and most probably never will.

As long as I'm still getting my pay, I guess the boss is running a decent business afterall.

I have read some articles where they say that employees leave the company because of their (bad) bosses. And also that employees tend to follow their good bosses around if possible.

Me? I have been lucky to have had good bosses so far ... touch wood ...

For bosses, please send this memo to your employees

Please be advised that there are NEW rules and regulations
implemented to raise the efficiency of
our organisation in 2007.

a. TRANSPORTATION :
It is advised that you come to work driving a car according to your
salary. If we see you driving a
Honda, we assume you are doing well financially and therefore you do not
need a raise.If you drive a
10 or more years old car or taking public
transportation, we assume that you
must have lots of savings &
money therefore you do not need a raise. If you drive a proton, you
are right where you need to be
and therefore you do not need a raise too...

b. ANNUAL LEAVE :
Each employee will receive 104 Annual Leave days a year . They are
called Saturdays & Sundays.

c. LUNCH BREAK :
1) Skinny people get 30 minutes for lunch as they need to eat more so
that they can look healthy.
2) Normal size people get 15 minutes for lunch to get a balanced
meal to maintain their average
figure.
3) Fat people get 5 minutes for lunch, because that's all the time
needed to drink a Slim Fast and
take a diet pill.

d. SICK DAYS :
Is MC Cert. proof of sickness?. No. If you are able to go to the
doctor, you are able to come to
work.

e. TOILET USE :
Entirely too much time is being spent in the toilets. There is now
astrict 3-minute time limit in
the cubicles. At the end of three minutes, an alarm will sound, the
toilet paper roll will retract,
the door will open and a picture will be taken. After your second
offence, your picture will be
posted on the company bulletin board under the "Chronic
Offenders"category.

f. SURGERY :
As long as you are an employee here, you need all your organs. You
should not consider removing
anything. We hired you intact. To have something removed constitutes a
breach of employment.

g. INTERNET USAGE :
All personal internet usage will be recorded and charges will be
deducted from your bonus (if any)
and if we decide not to give you any, charges will be deducted from
your salary. (note: RM2.00 per
minute)
Just for therecord, 73% of the staff will not be entitle for any
salary for the next 3 months as
their internet charges has exceeded their 3 months salary.
Thankyou for your loyalty to our company. We are here to provide a
positive employment experience.
Therefore, all questions, comments, concerns,complaints,
frustrations, irritations, aggravations,
insinuations,allegations, accusations, contemplation, consternation
and input should be directed
else where.

The Director.

I have read some articles where they say that employees leave the company because of their (bad) bosses. And also that employees tend to follow their good bosses around if possible.
I think the staff pinching in the investment banking is rather painful.

and hhtee, nice memo you have there.

I have seen instances where an entire department (around 20+ people) resigned en-mass just to join their boss in another company. Partly due to loyalty to the boss, partly due to money.

On staff pinching, it is common place these days. Companies want to grow and be bigger, and there is a limited market for some specialized areas. So if you cannot train, I guess you got to pinch. If you think the case is bad in investment banking, just look at call centers. People (junior level) there will move just for a RM50 increment!!

i'm still studying, have a couple more years before entering the workforce, but i've had several part-time jobs. and i cannot agree more that good bosses will make me stay at the job.

currently i have a part-time job which i go back to off and on during days i don't have classes or during semester breaks. the job can be repetitive and boring, but i like my job because the pay is good and the boss treats me well. she isn't too calculating and she's quite flexible, although we don't particularly get along very well (ie. don't click). i'd probably stay there until it's time for a full-time job.

I think only the one assessing the boss can only come out a standard to determine good and bad boss.

If you are well paid, well respected, well treated... I am sure u will say that this boss is good. On the other hand, your boss may mistreat someone, always scolding that person or not friendly to him/her, your boss will appear to be a bad boss to him/her.

Guess... we can sum up.. a good boss is someone who can be respected, helpful, not stingy when come to sharing his knowledge with u... and last but not least - well reward u for what you hv contributed. :)

I will tell you what most employees think of a good boss.

1. As long as the boss give big fat bonus every year
2. As long as the boss give good fat pay increases every year

Then you are a good boss.

1. you can give them compasionate leave to do their private affairs. they think they are entitled to it base on their time spend with you.
2. You allow them to come in late and go back early, they think they are entitle to it because they have work very hard.
3. give them free lunch and they think they deserve it because they wrote a good report.
4. pat them on the back and they say they earned it
the list goes on and on.................

If I were you. dont be a boss.................maybe 30 years ago it is ok to be a boss but not now.

having said that I think most bosses have change their attitude to match with the changing times. :)

In conclusion.
1.pay your employees well continuously and you are a good boss forever.
2. pay them well for a few years and when the company is not doing well and their pay is affected then you are a not so good and not so bad boss.
3. dont pay them well and you are forever a bad boss.

:) :) :) peace be on earth. its only my opinion.

3. dont pay them well and you are forever a bad boss.
 Hmmm...You opinion is valid to certain extend.

1. Don't forget different people (ie. staff) will have different wants, a well salary to you may not be a well salary to me and vice versa.

2. Again, though a boss may pay everyone well....it may still create a jealousy situation whereby maybe u r getting more than I am, and I am jealous - then I won't say the boss mistreated me!

3. It is definitely difficult to determine 'well salary'. To a boss, increment of 10% may be a lot or consider good but to a staff, it may be peanuts. So, u think u oredi a good boss, ur staff will still say u r a stingy boss.

I think your thinking may apply 20 or 30 years ago but currently the staff are looking more into benefits in kind. Priviledges such as :-

1. Annual trip & dinner
2. Salary increment
3. 5 Days work & flexible working hours
4. Good leadership & guidance
5. Conducive working environment
6. Long annual leave entitlement
and maybe more....

So, in conclusion - still very difficult to determine a boss as good and bad. Only u (the assessor) can judge. A boss maybe good to me, appears to be bad to u and vice versa. :p

Hi observer. I somehow do not quite agree with your observation. I had a colleague who resigned from the company even though she was given 5+ months bonus, 20% increment and a promotion. Reason? She was just fed up with the stress and the whole working environment. Why? Because her boss was just pushing her to do more.

My personal opinion of a good boss is someone that cares about their employees as a human being, is willing to encourage his/her employees to grow further, and also be able to financially reward when the time comes. Put all three equations together, chances are you will find that person a good boss. Again, my opinions only ar ...

you are right peterymlee.

there is always exception to the rule.

We can only generalised using majority as a basis.

believe me , I do know how employees thinks, from the 80's 90's and now 00's

the world has evolved, so did the population human beings. :) :)

people of today think differently from people of yesteryears.

nowadays money is the prime motivator. loyalty, dedication, responsibility, hardworkingness are the things of the past. (probably with .001% exception :)

nice to know you peterymlee. cheers

just me

ps: birdy , you are also right. I was only making a generalised statement.
I just retired from being a boss for almost 30 years.
