Wigan manager Paul Jewell, commenting on Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, after his club lost 1-3 to Man U: "....but Rooney was amazing as well...the lad does not know the meaning of the phrase 'lost cause'....the difference between being good, very good and world class is desire. He has that in abundance (report in the Spore New Paper, Dec 27).
Who are the "Wayne Rooneys" in Msia? Those who have an overwhelming desire to be world class?
1. Nicol David (yes! yes!)
2. AirAsia (as long as Tony Fernandes is in the driving seat!)
3. Petronas (a qualified "maybe"?)
Who in Msia have shown no overwhelming desire to be world class? Too numerous to list in detail, but let me put down my own particular bete noires:
1. The Msian bureaucracy a.k.a the "civil" service
2. Almost every Cabinet minister
3. Almost all Msian GLCs
4. Almost all local banks
5. KLIA
6. The public transport system in the Klang Valley and JB
Feel free to add to the list!

My thoughts exactly....Wayne Rooney is not exactly my first choice for role models.

Doesn't matter if its WR or any other. SirGalahad has an excellent point and fact of the matter!

Regardless of his faults, Wayne Rooney has the desire to be worldclass. He is not prepared to be just good or second-best.
Can we say the same about most things Malaysian?

Waynes Rooney may perform below par now and then but I think the point SirGalahad was making was his "desire to be world class" even when he was already beaten... that is the yardstick of his role model and Sir G is very apt in his choice there.
I would like to nominate the Malaysian Tenpin Bowling Congress (MTBC), especially the young team and the officials there over the years, for always believing they are world class materials and then make it really happen every now and then.....
I would rather nominate those who aspire and try to be world class standard because in the Bolehland, that would be easier and fewer to list that the complete "Blue Pages" of the Malaysian Govt Service Phone Directory!

Look at Japan.. they picked up everything started from scratch after WW2 and showed the world they're a force to be reckoned with after say 25 years.
Look at us 50 years hereon. NO COMPARISON!.. As long as we have these d*ckheads on top of the administration chain..we'll all survive but NOT progress to world class. They're NOT up to the challenge!.
Actually our rakyat has to share the blame too..current attitudes and mindset are not entirely promising or supportive.
Leave the fate of this country to the current regime and their "known" agenda?..permit me to say its a long term suicide!.

bslee, I do not think it is a fair comparison to look at the Japanese.
I believe that the Japanese people have this character trait which brings about dedication, focus and the incomparable passion for details. They also have the in-born trait of being extremely tidy and law-abiding.
Malaysians have a tidak-apa attitude, so how to be anywhere near the Japanese?

Look at some of the Scadinavian countries... look at Sweden, Norway and the small countries around there including land-scarce Switzerland, world's largest precision watch-maker, chocolate, even Swiss knife....
Nokia, Saab, Volvo, Abba, Ericsson and what have you.
Whatever they set out to do, they do it the best they could! Unparalleled!

Mr Chang, I know that this is a touchy subject for you, but I have to ask - how about the Singaporeans? Discounting their generally unlovable kiasu and kiasi characteristics, most Singaporeans seem to have that drive to excel. It's something that LKY inculcated from day 1 by constantly preaching the message that no one owes Spore a living and that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
Spore has a mindset to become a worldclass "global" city that is a hub for talent from all over the world. Can we say the same about KL?

I just hope for the Cleanest Public Toilet or The Longest Surviving RM400,000 Hitech Toilet and that would be a pretty good start.

And before we finish talking about the idiot making everything nonsense into Malaysia Book of Record, here comes Malaysia's Biggest Pictorial Book and longest non-stop relay drive on a circuit.

The Singapore example shows that these things are fully inculcatable. However, a message is never enough. It needs to be aligned with the correct incentives. If incentives and message are misaligned it will never work. That's why these top-down, ivory-tower, messages from PM, DPM and other ministers will never work, because they're not supported by the incentives.
