I was in Ipoh yesterday. There was nothing new to see, despite not having been back there for more than 6 years, maybe more. What's happening to Ipoh? Things look so run down, dilapidated buildings almost at every corner; saw a few abandoned projects, too. Things are certainly not well there. There's not much progress in as many years, if at all. I'm so sad, being an Ipohlang. :-- (

What...? I hope you do not want it to be turn into another concrete jungle like other cities. It is expanding sideways nonetheless and of course still maintaining the old world charm for the next generation to see.
Should you not be contented that they do not rip up everything ? At the very least they maintain the familiarity where you were brought up. Perhaps falling into non bn party has it good as well.

I used to complain why the town was not moving forward like penang and KL, but now I prefer to see my hometown keep it as it is basis, thus to keep our childhood memory refresh every time I go back there.

Yup, the old buildings admittedly bring back waves & waves of nostalgia but I was hopefully the least the owners could do was to repaint them. Not to have them replaced but a fresh coat of paint would do wonders.I was passing by Fair Park, where I used to live and cringed at the sight of the houses (by the main road). They are in such deplorable conditions. However, the police station near the Loh Wong Ngar Choy Kai Restaurant looks pretty good.

Admittedly, I didn't hv a clue about what Ipoh was like in recent years until a couple of weeks ago on a charity ride/trip/visit to an orphanage there. Can't say there is a lot to look at there. I suppose the only thing that keeps people going back there is the cheap food, the 'old' feel, the laidback ways.. what else?

Next time you're there, try Restoran Cowan Street. The beansprouts chicken & keowtiau are good to the last bite! Don't go to Loh Wong's. This is the best there is. It's so good, you don't wanna swallow, trust me. Too bad, when i was there yesterday, they were closed.

I went to Ipoh with my whole family and stay at relative's house during early december, peaceful eh, food also not bad well i duno wat is the stall's name my relative bring my whole family one ~

What i like about Ipon is the Limestone Hills/mountains, hills everywhere, i think at about evening you can see that the limestone colour is very beautiful (saw it while eating at a stall, yikes fleeting photographic moment) the soft evening sun reflected on it, but it's just a while~ and i tot thought the chicken rice is special too, as they pour the gravy all over the rice :p yummy

They have Jusco too you know, i think the clothes there are nicer and more practical~ managed to buy a nice practical polo tee, well i din see that design in jusco kl
The have tesco like kl too ~

it's true that Ipoh is quite but this is a good thing you know, it;s relaxing ^^

You're making me nostalgic, GHJ. Heheehe. Next time you're there, do give Restoran Cowan Street a try. It's located near Excelsior Hotel. It's the best ngarchoykai I have eaten anywhere in Msia. Serious. Go for it. :) As a side note, the owner of this restoran has a brother who operates the same business in another part of town. It used to be in Silibin but that's like 30 years ago. The thing is this chap's ngarchoykai's nowhere near his brother's. Supposed when it comes to making $$$, even closest relatives also 'no talk". Tell receipe, sure less business, eh?

Ipoh Old Town Cafe located at the town big padang.Big padang? Are you referring to Ipoh Padang where the Ipoh Royal Club is located? There are two HSBC branches nearby and right across is the St.Michael's Institution. Is that the one? Hmm..if so, then this cafe must be new, I think.

Actually the Old Town Kopitiam in KL and PJ are pretty much the same lah i find. I dont know how you find it lah coz you are originally from ipoh. There is one Old Town Kopitiam in Cheras area with big double storey building, nicely renovated located in next to UMW Toyota service centre in Cheras. It is actually near Cheras Makro, if im not mistaken, it is opposite Tmn Midah, along the main road leading to Cheras Leisure Mall from KL. It is a very nice hangout place to white coffee with friends. Brought my parents there last week and they love it.

Have you tried their Nanyang Coffee? It is fantastic and lovely, do try it if you do go to any of the outlets.

My wife's uncle who lives in Ipoh tells me that the Kopitiam chain that you find all over the country (especially the ones in the Klang Valley) originates from Ipoh. It is actually one of the few old-style coffee shops in Ipoh's old town (hence its name). You can find one facing the padang in the banking area of old-town Ipoh. This is the modern yuppie joint, much like the ones you find in KL & PJ. The original shop is an old coffee shop. By the way, there is another yuppie coffee outlet just next door to the Ipoh padang's Kopitiam which carries the theme of HongKong's Turf Club (jockey club or horse-race club) - this one is equally full of patrons, probably because of the overflow from the Kopitiam next door - don't be mistaken and walk in to the wrong one, look for the signage.

My wife's uncle tells me that there is one unbeatable coffee shop located at a cross-road junction in old-town Ipoh. This shop maintains its old style and refused to upgrade to new business ideas. A neighbour shop developed the Kopitiam brand and it has now become highly successful as the Kopitiam chain you know so well today - however, it is not from the'best' old coffee shop since the owner was not so enterprising to modernise its business.

I had the chance to try the 'best' Ipoh white coffee when we visited our uncle recently. The shop was packed and it was necessary to share tables with strangers. However, I did not find anything exciting about the so-called best coffee in town.

hi kwchang....the 'best' ipoh white coffee tht your wife's uncle mentioned is kedai kopi sun yuen long, rite? as i undertand from my parents and senior's tht the original ipoh white coffee is sun yuen long and the chain outlets tht u see round almost eveywhere is operated by nam king coffee shop which is located directly opposite sun yuen long. Some claims tht nam king is the 2nd best white coffee. Based on my own preference...sun yuen long is still the best ....and original ipoh white coffee....just like me originally born and breed in Ipoh ...... :)

Keneshiro and i are sharing the same computer therefore the IP address is the same.

My own preference is also sun yuen long, but i normally tapau and go coz the shop is always packed......

But back in KL, no choice lah have to go Old Town Kopitiam to ease my white coffee urge. I used to like Coffee Beans a lot and had spent a fortune for coffee and internet (lifestyle). Now i find Old Town is so much economical and the coffee is as good as the overseas brand. The environment of the shops are also nice and i definitely get to save so much more money! 1 cup of iced blended mocha is equal to 5 glass of iced white coffee!! The other day back in Ipoh, i saw banner of Old Town Kopitiam at the roadside promoting their shop in Ipoh Padang with broadband services.... I wonder whether do they charge for the internet services? Or they are providing it for free like Starbucks? If it is free, meaning to say i spend RM5.60 for 2 glasses of white coffee iced and use the internet for hours! What a good deal!

Was at Old Town Kopitiam for lunch. The white coffee, ok la, not bad. But the service sucked. The waiters couldn't speak English to save their lives and it was hard to catch their attention, too. 2nd order of white coffee took like 15 minutes to arrive and there were only about 5 tables occupied (it was past 2pm). They certainly need to send their waiters for training. They don't look local, btw.

Will I go back again? Well, not that soon, if at all.

The first two times I went to Ipoh, I wished that more of the roads were narrower and two ways, so I could be transported back to what the city might have been like 50 or 100 years ago.

Sigh...progress, you know...the first thing is to make the streets move faster by making them one way...then take away the traffic signals and roundabouts...but at the same time, you take away the charm of the streets because no one really sees the shops anymore......except when they are stuck in the jam and can actually look around.

Who knows, maybe the train to Ipoh will make a difference...maybe people will enjoy walking and the ambiance will come back...but sadly, not so likely...because the train station is far from the town centre....

but maybe a tram would make the streets slower and have more ambiance.

Im going to Ipoh next week...history coming alive, but only in my eyes and heart

Cheers, moaz

So, don't worry about it too much. But if you really want 2 visit a place that is more or less the same in the last 100 years, visit Kuala Kangsar. Hehe. Hardly any changes. And the chendol is just as 'shoick' as before. :D
