Anyone know where can I buy the pearl ball used in the bubble tea? Errr... when you drink the bubble tea, there is this black pearl like sago.. I tried to use sago to cook...the tenderness is different... sago is softer... or is there any secret in preparing the sago?

I hv no idea if those 'pearls' are available here but i know for sure u can get them from any supermarket in Taiwan. Maybe Romi-o will be kind enough to mail some to you? They are like large light brown sago, but you need to cook them in water for a while, then prepare some hot diluted sugar syrup in another pot, remove/transfer the half-cooked 'pearls' into the sugar syrup and allow to fully cook. That gives the 'pearls' its sweetness without clouding or thickening the sugar syrup. When it is ready, the color is absolutely beautiful and dark, slightly sweet with light caramel flavor and chewy. Keeps longer that way too.

Darn! I miss those real Taiwan pearl milk teas.

Bought and cooked and ate those pearls some years ago. Got them from Chang Tung, a specialty baking shop at SS24/13 (same row as La Manila in Taman Megah). Don't know if it is still there. You could try other baking shops. There is one I think in USJ8, near the Toto shop.

The cooked pearls don't last long, must be consumed within 6 hours for optimum pleasure. But yummy to eat all the pearls you want until you're sick. :D

I did saw a signboard near the Sunway Mentari area, atop the Dominoes (iirc) but if you're really keen on it, maybe u can have a look around there?

That is why, it is best to cook the pearls with sugar syrup. Makes it last longer. To store it in the fridge.. ensure the temperature is not too low or they will become hard.

I dont understand why powder is being used to make pearl milk tea here. In Taiwan, they use real fresh tea made each day, and they stick with a particular brand of non-dairy creamer (powder-form), and added sugar. It's as simple as that.
