Some calendars start off the week with Sunday. Thus giving people the idea that Sunday is the beginning of the week. Personally I think Monday should be the beginning of the week. If Sunday is the beginning, then whatever happened to weekends?

Aye, Sunday is the beginning of the week, as you must remember that the Roman calendar is invented by them and Sun is a holy day for them (Just the same as Fridays are holy for muslims).

Generally, people will consider Sunday as the beginning of the week.... that's the reason why hotels' weekend rate is meant for Friday night and Saturday night. Sunday night was not consider as weekend rate. ;)

Nevertheless, those considering Monday as the beginning of the week also not wrong...

Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia has a very detailed explanation on why some consider Sunday is consider as first day of the week as well as why others consider Monday as the beginning of the week. :)

When I was still in school, I was taught that Sunday's the start of the week.
But not too long ago, I heard some international organization (can't remember) proposed to fix Monday as the start.

Academicly, pls don't confuse your child. SUNDAY is the FIRST day of the week and that's what stated in the Year 1 English and Math textbooks. If you are sitting for a Malaysian govt exam, please remember this too!

But on my h/p, I program it as such that the week starts on Monday.
More convenient that way.

Sunday is traditionally the first day of the Judaeo-Christian seven-day week, between Saturday and Monday, and the second day of the weekend in some cultures. It is considered a holiday in lands of Christian tradition, and is the day when most Christians attend Church. (Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunday - Note that the wikipedia is not always a good source of info but most of the time, they are pretty accurate.)

So it all depends on what your background is. In other words, the dispute between you and your hubby has no clear winner.

The Roman Cahtolic Bulletin starts the week on Sunday and ends it on Saturday. That's why u need to read the section that says what's on next Sun.

What is most important to a Christian? The Catholic Bulletin or the Book of Moses? The latter clearly states that Sunday is the day God 'rested' after having created the world; hence it's the end of week.

Totally agree with you on this. It's crystal clear in the book of Genesis.

It's crystal clear in the book of Genesis.
To the Hebrews then (I'm not sure if it's still true today for the Jews), a day began in the evening and ended the following evening. Genesis refers to the Jewish Sabbath which began on Friday evening and ended on Saturday evening.

The root word for Sabbath (noun) is the verb 'sabat' (Hebrew) which means to 'stop/cease'. Thus, Sabbath has connotations of both completion and rest. Christian tradition changed the rest day to Sunday but Sunday remains the first day of the week. So the first day of the week starts with "rest" in all its meanings, an interesting concept when you think about it.

I don't know who change what and when, but in Genesis it is stated:

"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done."

AFAIC, anyone can call any day Sunday also. Not like interpretations can change anything but the state of mind of the person concerned. :D

What I meant was that to the olden Hebrews (and I think also to modern Jews), the 7th day was the Sabbath (the day of rest) which was from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. That, not Sunday, was what was referred to in Genesis.

By that reckoning, the first day of the week would have been from sundown on Saturday to sundown on Sunday. Christian (not Jewish) tradition changed that first day to a morning-to-night "day", hence Sunday was seen as the day of rest. Why it was changed is another subject altogether.
