HI,
I was wondering if anyone in this knowledgeable and well read forum knows what is the import tax/ excise duty for furniture items made of wood into the country?
Also, is there any exemption for Malaysians returning to the country with container loads of furnitures acquired from overseas?
Thanks.

As far as I can remember, there are no taxes for Malaysian expats bringing home household effects. I shipped back my furnitures and stuff ( mostly new ) from China and Singapore when I worked in those places some years ago.
I assume you are using those international movers. All you need to do is to fill up some forms and they will take care of the rest...door to door.
The best place to check taxes and regulations are these international movers in the country you are currently in. Most have operations/offices in Malaysia.
There is a limit, I believe, one can bring back...like you may be troubled if you try to ship back 10 rosewood dinning tables or 10 brand new TV sets.

Penangkia is correct ... expats returning home allowed to import furniture for own home but if you planned to do business - its a different story. Check with freight forwarders and they can tell you what FOB is all about. Asean origin furniture attracts a 25% tax on timber products...

Hi sinleong,

I have just imported a shipment of Rosewood furniture. All the details of import taxes are in the file which is currently at the office.

If i'm not mistaken it's 20% duty + 10% sales tax. But i can confirm the correct figure by tomorrow.

Hi sinleong,

I've checked thru the documents given by the Clearing Agent. What i find here is a bit of surprise, on some of the goods the tax is 20% Customs Duty and 10% Sales Tax.

But some other goods have no customs duty but 10% sales tax.

I don't know how do they handle this. Let me mention some examples herebelow:

1. Nest Set (Nesting Tables) Tariff code: 4420.10 900 20% Cust. duty + 10% S.Tax
2. Chester (Drawers) Tariff code: 4420.10 900 20% Cust. duty + 10% S.Tax

3. Console with Frame - Tariff code: 9403.60 900 NIL Cust. duty 10% S.Tax
4. Coffee Table - Tariff code: 9403.60 900 NIL Cust. duty 10% S.tax
5. Dining Table w/8 chairs - Tariff code: 9403.60 900 NIL Cust duty 10% S.Tax

So, there's a difference with the taxes applied on the items. Now i'm not very sure why is that. I have arranged a meeting with the agent after the holidays to explain this to me.

You can always Leave me a message if you require any further help on importing or clearing agent n bla bla. Should do my best to help.

*Cheers*
