KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi told Muslims in the country to use the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration to foster ties with other races.
Loving one another and respecting neighbours and friends irrespective of their religion is in line with Islamic teachings, the Prime Minister said.
In his Hari Raya Aidilfitri message which was telecast live over television Monday night, he said Muslims could share their Hari Raya joy with non-Muslims and show them that Islam encouraged its followers to be forgiving and to cultivate friendship.
“In this way, our country can continue to be a peaceful and wealthy nation, and one that brings us happiness,” he said.
Abdullah also urged Muslims to correct the skewed views that the West has about Islam promoting terrorism because the problem was caused by Muslims themselves.
Western society, he said, had not seen proof to support the contention that Islam wanted its followers to be successful and progressive because other than the loose solidarity among Muslims, not one Islamic nation could be deemed developed.
“So, what’s happening now doesn’t really give a good picture. Actually what’s happening, what’s giving people a bad impression of our country, is not just the work of others but our own doing as well,” he said.
Abdullah said although Islam taught its followers to be good and progressive in all fields, Muslims themselves have not been striving towards this end.
“So I hope that this Hari Raya we will make a joint resolution, that we want our nation to be peaceful and safe, we want the Muslim world to be peaceful and safe, and Muslims to be a united and progressive people.”
The prime minister also wanted Muslims in Malaysia to work with Muslims from other countries to eradicate the poverty that existed in most of the Islamic nations.
In this respect, he reminded Muslims in the country to be thankful for the peace and wealth that they enjoy in contrast to the sufferings of Muslims in some countries that are plagued by war and sectarian violence.
He also thanked the security forces, especially those who have to work during the festive period, for sacrificing their own interest for the country’s security.
“I beg forgiveness for the mistakes committed not only by myself but also my family, and I wish Muslims Selamat Hari Raya,” he said.
