?it's a topview shot of camels but the sun is at an angle so you see the shadows as though it was walking on the sand?

Each camel appears to be carried by a long-necked lizard or turtle or something?

I know ....I know....! The 'black' camels are actually shadows!. The long necked lizard/turtle is actually the camel!

Am I right?

:) Yup.. correct.. the camels are the little white thingy in the picture & the black one are just the shadows!!

"Camels cast long shadows under the late-day sun as they search for grass in Oman. Photograph by George Steinmetz. "

When firefly was first looking at it, firefly was wondering why them camels were so thin...like fake. Untill flynn mention long-necked lizard.. then  firefly had a second look!!!!!

Eh, not long-necked lizards lah. At first, I thought that was what they were but I couldn't think of any long-necked lizards which looked like that. And it's a National Geographic shot, so there's no trick photography involved. My second look told me that what kress said was right: "it's a topview shot of camels but the sun is at an angle" which accounts for the shadows of the camels on the sand.
