I am a novice too, but for price comparison, check out lowyat.net, then go to Sunway Pyramid IT centre to procure - more choices there. Price will be different according to brand, memory and speed. Hope this helps.

I just bought an extra SD 1 GB (Kingston hi-speed) card at the recent Pikom fair for only RM80+. How come you are quoted so much more for it. The normal speed is only RM70+.

It depends on the brand, speed and what you need it for.

For example,

Kingston SD 1GB/ 2GB - RM 85/170
Kingston Elite Pro 1Gb / 2GB - RM 100 /200
Kingston Ultimate - 1Gb / 2GB - RM 135/265
Transcend Ultimate - 1GB / 2Gb / 4 Gb - RM 90/ 190 /310

Speed ranges from 66x for the normal to 150x for the ultimate. You will need the speed if you are using it for a digital camera as you wouldn't want to shoot and then wait. For a pda storage, speed does not matters that much. And you can never have sufficient memory - 2 GB would be the way to go and 4 GB would be marvellous.

You need to be aware that there are imitations in the market and a price way below the market average should give you warning signals. Check out the lowyat website for price comparisons and the store name. There are some doing bulk sale and delivers to your home as well but one really can't comment on their authenticity.

I believe the same SD card is quoted much higher in camera shops compared to computer shops. Hence if you had been checking the prices in camera shops, that may be the reason why it was quoted more.

I believe the camera shops are not up to date with the volatile prices of memory chips.

Not sure whether you are referring to the mini or the micro sd!

Kingston mini 512 MB retails for around RM60 and the micro around RM75.

IIRC, the current max capacity for the micro is 512 MB whereas the mini goes up to 2 GB (provided your phone can support it) and retails for around RM90 (1 GB) / RM200 (2 GB).

The micro is smaller than the mini but with an adaptor, you can use both as a normal sd.

In Subang, you should be able to get it either from Pyramid or Subang Parade - but you might need to negotiate to get those prices. Go to computer outlets, not camera shops.

Those prices are valid in in Low Yat, I normally get it from Cycom. Around PJ, you can try Computer Wars (www.computerwars.com.my).

Bring along your camera when buying the memory chip. Some older cameras will not read the newer chips. One bad exapmle is the Olympus. Some very old ones will not use the xD with the "H" on it. My previous 8080 will not use CF cards above the 80X. I also have a portable card reader/backup which will not read my 1Gb KingMax SD card. But all my panasonics have no problem using it. So not all cards are created equal.
