Following the fiery incident in Melaka where 3 siblings and their aunt died, I read that they managed to reach the back door but it was locked, and in such a panic, who would remember to bring the keys - http://www.thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2006/8/17/nation/15158565&sec=nation&focus=1

Now, what can we do to ensure that we can escape from a fire as, no thanks to the rampant crime in USJ, our houses are locked up pretty tight? Do we sleep with all our keys hanging around our necks or what? Any suggestions?

The most important thing is, every house MUST have a fire extinguisher and put it at a place everyone knows or can see (I.e. kitchen). At RM100 you can get a set and to get one in USJ there is a shop behind the Metro bus depot.

With USJ/SJ bad traffic jam, dont expect the fire engine to arrive that fast....

There is no harm hanging keys near the door as long as it is not reachable by hand from outside and some locks uses number combination... Use a combination for all locks... i.e. Car no :D

I agree keys should be hung close to the doors in my case i insert them in the wooden door locks before i go to bed..in this case all the occupants know where the keys are..dont worry abt the robbers if they are bent in breaking in they will find a way.

can also use a master key that can open up every door and grill, just carry the master key everywhere. locksmith can configure your lock to support a master key if your set does not come with one
