The Johor Menteri Besar has great expectations of the proposed South Johor Corridor (SJC). Well and good.
But did he have to resort to using emotive language like the SJC will transform Johor such that it will "no longer just be a hinterland for Singapore"?
I would point out that Singaporeans, and tourists from other countries holidaying in Singapore, form a very substantial percentage of Malaysia's annual tourist arrivals (in fact, it could be in excess of 50%).
There's a lot to be gained from a win-win approach to tourism such that both Singapore and Malaysia (not just Johor) benefit.
But if the Singapore-Malaysia agenda is perceived through the prism of a zero-sum game, where one benefits at the expense of the other, such as the view expressed by the Johor Menteri Besar, then the outstanding bilateral issues between the two countries will outstanding for a long, long time.
And that would be a great pity. :(
