Hi there,
Can someone please advise me which state is Australia has the lowest cost of living. I'm asking on behalf of a friend who is planning to send her son for university studies in Australia. I understand that cost of living in Sydney is very high, is it?
Thank you.

Yang berjalan-jalan..... those are not states..... they are called towns like you mentioned whereas he is interested in the 'cheapest' state .
I studied in queensland years ago ... it was cheaper of course compared to NSW and Victoria .... but I would venture to say Western Australia (eg Curtin University) will be cheapest . :)
But it all depends on what he wants to study

Have heard from friends and relatives in W.A. that prices of real estate has gone "off the roof" lately. Seems property speculators and investors has moved from the Eastern states and has set up shop over in W.A. thus pushing prices up. Lately property in places like Templeton, Cannington, Bibra lake and even Kardinya has like shot up between 75% to 150%. Now factor that with the currency exchange rates increase - you get the pretty picture. If you had invested in land or property as recent as 3-5 years ago... well, you're literally sitting on a gold mine now. :)

Perth WA is good value for money...for studies and quality of life. Much quieter than the Sydney or Melbourne. But generally OK with lots of space, no traffic jams and beautiful environment. A few reasonable Unis to choose from.
Cost is still relatively low compared to the eastern states. Have a large Asian ( Malaysian/Singaporean) community, plenty of Asian foods and even a small Chinatown.
Property prices have risen since the 90s...but still relatively affordable for Malaysians. In the 90s you could get a > 6000sq ft. s/s bungalow for A$80K to 120K in a decent suburb, depending on location of course. Double the prices now, still OK compared to what one has to pay for a "terrace house" in TTDI or Bandar Utama, for eg... still good value for money. If you have a bungalow in TTDI, you could probably exchange for 2 s/s bungalows in a middle class suburb in Perth or an up market beautiful one in one of the more affulent suburbs.
If I am going to study in Aus. I will choose Perth. I have been going downunder to all major cities there for years now, and Perth is still my favourite. Maybe, a little like Penang. Will be there again for the whole month of August. I will bring back some real estate brochures for anyone interested.
