Last Saturday, I went to a shoe shop at The Mines Shopping centre to buy a pair of shoes. There were sales offer on some selected items. I saw a pair of shoes priced at RM199.90 and was entitled to a 10% off = RM179.91.
So after I picked my shoes, I paid RM200.00 for the shoes at the counter and waited for change. The cashier without saying anything gave me my change RM20.00 but where is my 9 cents??!!
I politely asked her about my 9cents, "Excuse me, where is my change of 9cents?" She pretended to be surprise asking me in Malay "Oh, itu 9 sen U mau kah?" I answered, "Eh, 9sen itu duit kan? Kalau u takde 1sen, u cakap, I bagi," and I put 1cent on the counter waiting for my 10 cents. Wah, she was so angry but could not say anything cos it's a customer's right to have sufficient change, right? What do you guys think?

One of the reason that they dont give you back as some people dont mind it and also its good for them to cover the shortage of cash in their register.
I even had seen before in hypermarkets that they had display a notice that there are shortage of one cents. Even at Mcd's or other fast food joint, some cashier wont give you back the one cents. And they pretend that they don't know. I always ask back for it. They answered back, sorry dont have one cent. My answer back to them is can I don't pay the 5% tax ?
Some places give you extra. That's customer service. Even some places, apologizes for not having the one cents to return to you.
..She pretended to be surprise asking me in Malay "Oh, itu 9 sen U mau kah?" I answered...
You have done the right thing. I would not like to be taken for granted like that in that tone of voice. Even for 1/2 a cent. If she apologizes for not having the 9 cents, then no problem.

Agree that some people dont mind about the few cents. Sometimes I tend to be generous for not chasing back the few cents. Actually I wont answer the cashier in such a rude way if she didnt ask me such a stupid question. Usually I wont carry 1 cents with me after I receive from cashiers, but after this I will - just incase, I should standby mar...

i've noticed that many establishments have started this practice of rounding the bill to the nearest 5 sen (to their advantage of course) and not giving you any 1 sen coins. Since when did this become acceptable?
All those one cents can add up to hundreds of dollars..(if I take them to a bank?) Well, I've got to say that if they don't want cents, I'm not sure I want to be giving to those establishments. I'd like to think that every little bit counts.

Yea, imagine I'm not the only customer giving 'free' NINE cents worr.... esp there's sales offer. If 100 customers being so generous / not calculative, then she'll get RM9 on that day, sedikit-2 lama-2 jadi bukit... Wow, RM9 can get 2 free meals man!

I agree that in some places they will give 10cents but in this society of cunning esp in buy/sell, I can tell you 9 out of 10 wont give 10cents, haha!
I've seen in most Post office, the counter cashier will put a small box for their customer to 'donate/throw' unwanted 1 cent coins so that in case the next customer happen to short of 1 cent, he/she can pick 1 or 2 from the box to pay.
Actually I like to collect 1cent & 5cent coins (esp old one) so I wont bring them out after I got from change. I remember I peek in to that box once just to look whether there is old 1cent coin (the one with parliament building). It was a coincident that I didnt withdraw my 1cent from pocket so I used it to exchange that old coin, quite honest?

I always bring 1 cents in my pocket, when I go shopping.
I keep the one cents in the car just in case.
Never throw your one cents away.

I've developed the habit of depositing all the 1 sen I collect into a piggy bank at home..till one fine day..deposit into savings account...Its still money!. :D
Frequently, I tend to find these coins on the road, kaki 5, just about anywhere..and pocket it..into the piggy it goes.. :D ..Again, it's still money!..

I give all my one cents to the postal staff, I am never going to be rich with all the one cents.
 That cashier is so rude and sarcastic. She should not said something like "9sen also mau ka?" Somemore she gets angry of her own faulties.. U have the right as a consumer to get back ur money even though it is a small amount...
As a consumer we should exercise our right, cannot let them take us for granted.. though the matter appears insignificant..

Wifey keeps those 1 sens and 5 sens to pay toll...haha. But yes, I carry some 1 sens just in case the establishment says, 'Sorry, we are out of 1 sen coins'. Its not the money but the principle, that customers shld hv exact change back. Otherwise, if everyone waives this principle, establishments will take it that customers here dun bother abt the 1 sen or few sens difference. Thus, a case like mashimaro's will befall all other customers.

Now every cents counts huh. 1 of the supermarket that I went to .. which I can't recall it now, they actually have a few cents in front of their cashier counter .. jz in case you don't have 1 cents to give them. We can actually use those 1 cents on the tray. Which is a good service I believe.
Oh yeah, its in JB new Jusco complex. :) Other places ... they've already tax us for service charge. So don't have to leave any coins or cents back to them. Understand sometimes they need tips but then again, if I was thinkin' if they want to have tips then don't charge us on service charge.
Nowadays whenever I go to places which I know they'll charge me even in cents .. I'll bring along 9cents. One 5cents & four 1cents. :) Everywhere we go also kena tax. I think this is enough.

Those establishments should just put a sign board...all bills will be rounded to the nearest 10 cents. Then no more problems of unsatisfied customers... But as for Firefly, he keeps all of them 1 cents. It's the wifey who robs him of it. :o

Such silly people. Lose customer satisfaction over 1 sen!
Jusco supermarket places 1 sen in a bowl at the checkout counter for customers that do not have enough.
Many years ago, when there was a shortage, some shops give sweets as part of their change. So easy, so cheap, save quarrels, increase customer staisfaction. And what does it costs them - a lot less than advertising their shop!

Hehe..in this case it should be for the cashiers that do not have enough.

Fuss is b'cos we work our ass out for all this ... even the cents. That's why some ppl collect back all the cents. You'll be surprise one day if you don't have even that 1cents .. to pay bills .. those fella will be chasing badly after you for it. But then if there is additional changes which you can just for go from them .. then of cos most of them would be very happy bout it.

Just last week, the cashier at a reputable Cinema at 1 Utama gave me RM10 short !!!!. Luckily before leaving, I did a quick mental calculation and realised I was short of RM10!!! I pointed out to him. But he said sorry. For the benefit of the doubt, I forgave him. :)

sorry to digress here.
my aunt was given short of Medicine (tablets / pills) in a government hospital. when she experienced this during the first time, she thought that the nurse couldn't read the doctor's hand writing.
when my aunt visited the gov hospital for the second time, the nurse again didn't give adequate tablets as stated in the doctor's presciption! my aunt was mad! she complained and got her pills!
I wonder what the nurse does with the extra pills ?
just like what the cashier does with the extra money.
I guess maybe they are underpaid ?

Though 1 cent is not worth anything, but without it, kelam-kabut, haha.
What if the pasar people (wet market or night market) sell their goods with most accurate amount? As far as I know, they are really good in doing business and most of them are not calculative about 10 or 20cents (if request that amt to be waived), maybe just to make you happy with the discounts?
If all seller in pasar doing business using accurate amount, I believe that will slow them down esp in giving change to customers, dont you think so? Besides, they cannot be slow, everyone seemed to be rushing esp during weekend - not to lose a single customer.

Ahhh...we pack the 1 sens into a packs of 10 sen using clearwrap or plastic wrapping. Well, if you pass by that same toll everyday at almost the same time and with the same ppl manning the shift, they will begin to recognise u and the 1 sen packs and accept them without question.

Besides being irritated by cashiers keeping your 1 cent, there is this habit by some waiters returning to you lots of coins or small notes so that you will leave them behind for them as tips. This happen to me a lot here in Singapore in some hotels ....
For example, if your bill is S$79, and you put a S$100 bill to pay, you will most likely get back a $10 note and 11 of the silly S$1 coins, hoping you will leave them all behind as tips. If he/she has given you 2 S$10 notes and a S$1 coin, she would most likely get only a S$1 tip. Irritating, isn't it?
Yup. It is certainly true. I've often wondered about that as well. They shouldn't make us feel obliged to tip like telling us "I hope you leave your change".. altho as a general practice, at restaurants and such, most of us would tip. I'm definitely an ok tipper, not much, but I would tip when the cashier is friendly and polite..which has been almost every time. :p It is just a way to appreciate them with a thanks-for-making-my-day gesture, but sometimes I'd be tempted to skip the tip. :p (if I'm broke.) Some people like the bellman, concierge, maid etc..depends on tips to make a better living.
Anyway, there are some that we are not supposed to tip. I believe they are the airline flight attendants, salespeople, employees at fast food joints, cinema ushers, hairdressers? etc..
Anyhow, I do not like places that "suggest" we must tip by deliberately giving us coins as change.

You can request those $1 coins (or smaller denominations) meant for tips to be changed to notes. If the waiters claimed they do not hv the change, ask to see the managers. More often than not, they will accomodate your request.

It is the consumers right to ask for the 9 sen and expect it even. It's not the miserly sum actually but if 9 sen is such a small amount then why does the shop then charge their customer's the 1 sen and not just charge it at a round figure? Also if they want to charge such weird sums like 1 sen or 2 sens then they should ensure they have sufficient change to return to their customers. Usually I don't take the 1 - 2 sens change but that's my choice. I would hate for others to make any choices on my behalf.

Well said. Another place is the Italian joint in front of Sheraton Subang. As it is, they take you for granted since one goes there quite often. They didn't even mention anything about not having 1 cent. They should just have the 1 cent or otherwise have rounded amounts!
