1) What brand?
2) Under warranty?
Go directly to the service centre..it is way cheaper n reliable than to get charged for :
Delivery : XXX
Service Charges : XXX
Storage Charges : XXX
= RM A LOT
recommended to get back to the manufacturer. If u go to any shops, they still send it back to manufacturer then maybe charge u extra for handling.

the brand is toshiba satellite 2410.
The waranty expired already. I think the laptop is about 3-4 years old.
do you think i should still send it back to the manufacturer?
I believe the shops will still send it back to the manufacturer for repair, especially a major problem like yours.
u can call Teledynamics to get a quote. :) then compare with the shops.
Their HQ / Service Centre is located at Glenmarie, Shah Alam. Check this out:

For laptops, it is advisable to send it back to manufacturer.

just called...
they will be charging me "around" rm1500.
I got a quote from the previously mention kepong store who said will charge me "around" RM1000.
Hmmm... and i guess their "around" would mean +/- rm500?
perhapes i shall ask around the computer shops in sunway pyramid?

kepong store could use cheaper materials? 2nd hand lcds? or they havent added the transportation..storage..n sometimes they compensate by taking some parts out of ur laptop..(i heard this from a fren who works in low yat)..
to be on the safe side..LCDs are best handled by manufacturers..btw, after u install ur LCD, u'll get warranty on the screen again..
Yup, once u get a firm quotation from the authorised distributor/service center, they won't charge u anything extra(except if something else is found to be malfunctioning) and comes with a solid after service warranty.
If u went to a dishonest pc repair shop, they may charge other miscellaneous charges, replace additional parts, used defective or 2nd hand parts etc, etc and end up costing much more. Send it only if u have absolute trust in them.
btw, there's a 2nd hand laptop sales & service & LCD repair shop in Puchong that I've seen advertising somewhere but for the life of me can't remember where I've seen it though.

The shop said it is a 2nd hand lcd screen but i do get a 30 day waranty.
The guy at the service centre said it was "around" rm1500. I'm very suspicious of the word "around" because the guy said i need to bring it in to be checked and so on. I've heard cases where they brought it in to be checked and was automatically charged RM190 even if you decide it's not worth to repair

"around" 1500? might as well get a new one right? a new basic model costs around rm 2500... and you get better stuff.. bigger hdd, faster processor, etc..
since you said that the notebook was 3 - 4 years old anyway....

yup... that's why i'm in a dilemma whether to get a new one of repair this. Feels like a waste since everything is working perfectly except for the screen

mine was spoiled too quite some time ago. also got quoted around RM1000. if you don't need the laptop to be portable, better get an external monitor or LCD and use it at home (still can be portable though if you don't mind carrying the weight :p ).

i need it to be portable. the laptop itself is also quite heavy already
Sometimes, u got to weight the costs and decide when to let go of the old one. Even if u fix the old laptop for 1.5K, how much longer will it last b4 something else give way and u hv to spend another 500 to 1k to repair it?
If u buy a new one for 2.5k then u will hv peace of mind for the next few years. Not to mentioned faster processor, bigger HDD, more RAM, built in DVD/CDRW at no extra cost, etc, etc. IIRC, 3-4yrs back a DVD drive alone for the Tecras costs a whopping 1K or whereabouts... But then, being a long time Toshiba user, those 2.5K laptops might not appeal to u at all.
Decisions.. decisions... :D

true. my colleague's laptop's lcd went kaput and the quote to fix it is also around RM1500. RM1500, to say not much, it's a lot of money. To say a lot of money, but looks not much.
In the end, the company decided to not fix it, and get a new one instead. It's already an old machine (about 2-3 years), so spending that much money is not worth it. So now, it's a desktop instead. Simply plug in a CRT monitor lor.
