No More Scratch And Win But Discount Cards

PENANG, Feb 17 (Bernama)-- Undeterred, a company here came up with a new tactic to get customers to purchase its products.

Before it was "Scratch and Win", but since its licence was revoked a few months ago, the company, operating under a new name, had introduced a new tactic by offering discount cards.

It did not take long before its modus operandi was discovered by the authorities and yesterday, a team from the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry's enforcement division in Penang busted its operation at a car park at Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Its director Fahmi Kasim said 150 discount cards which had been opened, 144 unused discount cards, a Toyota Unser and a Nissan Vanette were seized during the raid conducted at about 4 pm.

Ten youths, aged between 17 and 24, believed employed by the company to solicit for customers, were detained for questioning, he added.

He said the company which dealt in direct selling business and with several branches, had operated under a new name since two months ago.

Besides offering water filters at a discount price, the company also offered lucky draws with attractive prizes, including a Proton Perdana V6, he added.

"To be eligible for the lucky draw, the customer will have to purchase four items costing more than RM7,000 at a discount price of RM3,988," he added.

To convince the public, he said the company advertised the names of winners for the lucky draws in newspapers.

There is this group of about 8 youngsters (boys and girls) operating around the junction of HSBC and StanChart in Taipan recently.

I hope more people become aware of their scam.
