Went to 1Utama there .. went to new wing area. Saw tis new restaurant open, finally a nice environment japanese buffet in 1U. Price is reasonable but believe it was cheaper than wat i saw earlier cos there is a note stating there is a revise on pricing plus another revise pricing for valentine's day.

Normal price now is RM43++ but on Valentine's day will be RM55++. So peeps, is this price reasonably cheap or average or jz darn expensive. I think if we eat there than in Genki or Sushi King .. those place we will be spending more than wat we're spending here plus we can hv unlimited sushi n sashimi .. :D

Anyone has already tried this place , care to pass your comment in herE? How's the sushi? Fresh anot? I saw a lot of ppl there .. buffet lining very nice! :)

I was there on the third day of CNY and I gotta say that the sashimi there wasn't too fresh.. but since i was there only once, can't say if i was just plain unlucky or their QC there is bad. Kampachi still best for sashimi.

As for variety, there are more compared to Kampachi and some of their fried stuff is quite nice.

Was there 3 weeks ago. Food is ok if compare by japanese buffet standard. Same as Saisaki, there r also some non-japanese food such as local fried noodles, asam prawn, kimchi, etc. However as per normal Malaysia kiasu spirit, the unagi and tempura prawn will always be empty, being grabbed by ever-hungry Malaysian.

If you want really fresh and nice japanese food, Sugimoto, Kampachi or Nippon Tei still fare better.

Actually I was there the first week it opened. The owner is the same guy as saisaki's. I was there again sometime before chinese new year.

In both occasions, the sashimi are not very fresh. Furthermore, as i can remember..there are less choice of sashimi fish as compared to saisaki's.

On my first trip there, I remember there is this ginseng soup with one small chicken on each bowl. Then on my second visit, the menu change to porridge with chicken or dove (the porridge is sux). dunno now..do you guys know?

Aiks, if not fresh then better not go or else get tummy ache.

I had Jap buffet last weekend at Jogoya in Starhill. Very nice and sashimi is fresh - they even have scallop sashimi. Lots of selections until you get lost in the place. Free flow juices, coffee and Movenpick ice cream (like the ones you get at Marche). Bit pricier than Shogun as the price range is RM68 to RM78++ depending on what time u go.

22-02-2006, 08:53 AM
Joyoga is it like air asia arh? hehe .. diff times u booked da tickets it will be either cheaper or more expensive!

Dunno if any of u seen a pic of a japanese guy in japan that has maggots in his brains there cos of eating too much of sushi & sashimi? so if sushi / sashimi not so fresh better stay away from it orh ..

haha .. really that good arh? but some say that the sashimi there not so fresh wor .. what u had there youngteenguy?
will be goin there coming friday.....some celebration. i hope your guys comment really works. I dun want to end up disappointed with the food, especially the sashimi and sushi.

Saisaki food quality is dropping compare in late 90's. I was a regular patron (i work near there) but recent years, i saw the standard is dropping. Hard to get fresh food there.

Kampachi still the no.1. I m waiting for some restaurant to beat Kampachi but nontheless, can't find 1.

Hullo,

For fine Japanese dining, suggest Rakuzen. Got 2 branches, one in Chulan Square and one in Subang Jaya, don't know SS??. Just a bit further off from the traffic lite turning to SJMC, on the left hand side. If I'm not mistaken, there's a bank next door to it. Maybe hard to spot during nite time, blink and you miss it. Reservation required, place always pack full full.

Have tried Kampachi but believe PJ Hilton Genki and Pan Pacific Glenmarie (now different name) are comparable, if not better in terms of quality. The joint in Sunway Lagoon Resort Hotel was a great disappointment. Am just talking about the buffet, which I can only afford.....not the ala carte.

There's another joint in Sunway Pyramid, on top of Kim Gary, opposite Coca, same chain, but different name....Zen. Food there is approx. 20% cheaper compared to the joint opposite SJMC. They serve only ala carte though.

Like Su said, beef teriyaki is not bad.....just had it on Monday. Cod fish set is good (RM28 in Zen, RM38 in Rakuzen) and the noodles also yummy......especially the one with the scallop. Japanese curry rice (less than RM20) also ok. The set meals are good deals.....and the ala carte is more authentic Japanese taste.

Sushi and sashimi are good as well......but expect to pay a premium over Genki Sushi or Sushi King price!

Was at I Utama on Saturday evening. Came across this long line of people queing. Went to kaypo, and quess what, they were lining up for the Shogun buffet. Actually, I wanted to try the buffet and didn't know the restaurant's location and was looking for it and this was when I saw the queue. Had to give it a miss this time around. Didn't know it was this popular.

I was there at Shogun last week for lunch. The sashimi was not very fresh but acceptable, other food was so so only. The buffet didn't serve any "sang hou" but instead each customer was table-served a cheese baked "sang hou" which was not fresh... ;)

kokomo
20-03-2006, 11:48 PM
So Kakilang .. your overall review on this Shogun ain't worth the money there is it? B'cos most of the things there not fresh? Service? Good or not good?

If sashimi ain't fresh then nothing is good there oledi .. cos japanese food most particular is freshness of sashimi ..

I guess now hv to start lookin' for else place to go for sashimi ..

The rest of the food (Chinese & Korean food) is ok there except sashimi, and service is quite good. If u r looking for quality/fresh sashimi, I wud suggest u to try out those Japanese restaurants at the hotels such as Keyaki at Pan Pacific Glenmarie, Kampachi at Equatorial or Eyuzu at Eastin. All these serve Japanese buffet in the weekend. Of coz u gotta pay more compare to Shogun.

I hv yet to try out Eyuzu but heard good review from a friend. Maybe some forumers wud like to share their reviews here... ;)

SunwayKid
21-03-2006, 10:31 AM
Yeah....Keyaki at Pan Pac Glenmarie is good. It is one of the few places where one get to enjoy yellow tail. It is now under different management (the hotel) - not sure, whether the restaurant standard is still the same.

Another place where you can go is Genki in PJ Hilton. No yellow tails though but plenty of other sashimi, soft shell crabs and more authentic Japanese food.

Will be trying Jogoya when I get my pay cheque this month......... :)

I found these reviews in a food review forum, which caught my attention. Of course it will be more reliable, if one of us actually patronise the place.

" tried in on valentines's day. Full house but food was sufficient. quality and selection is best so far. better than even kampachi or hilton jap buffet. they've got this soup which everyone took but i only found out after having my fill. looked interesting. the bowl made of paper. other things is you can get whole fishes such as bawal, trout?, etc. free flor of juices, coconut whole, chinese tea, green tea, coffee, movenpick ice cream. For main course, they've got everything and more than you'll likely see elsewhere. So go try it at least once and see. definately value for money but the 100rm/per person means you can't go every week. "

"It's more like a Seafood Buffet. Oysters, Snails, Fish, Sushis, Sashimis... lotsa varieties and try it out if you haven't...it's definitely worth to try..:)"

Disclaimer - these reviews are NOT written by me.

It's on the 6th floor....Sushi station I mean. The 6th floor caters mainly to young crowd, so don't expect anything fancy. Food - so, so only.

You need to go up to the IT centre on the 3rd floor in Sq Wang and then take the stairs up or park at the rooftop and walk across. Alternatively, take the lifts up.

This place, as I posted earlier is called Zen, the younger brother of Rakuzen. It is managed by a supervisor named Benny (I think that's his name or something similar) and Rakuzen, by a Japanese, so you pay Japanese managed prices there.

If you go to Zen, tell the supervisor that you are a regular and asked him (he is the one not in uniform) for a privilege card which will give you a 10% discount entitlement. :)

Had their oyster, avocado and california sushi the last time I was there......yummy yummy.

never eat at Shogun, but the restaurant beside Shogun - Esquire Kitchen . I could see many ppl go during weekend or month end or beginning of the month until a lot of ppl will queue for a table.

majority between friend and couples, seldom see family.

Last month, I still remember i saw many couples and friend queue for a table the minutes i "check in " at Esquire Kitchen 6:45pm, even after quite some time with kids running to the next shop for play, I could continuously see other will queue for a table until 8:00pm. which I already "check out" from Esquire kitchen.

Still remember i always sit outside and i look at what they are eating, they look back, so the looking war non stop until we finish our meal

kokomo

I agree wif you winnie. Esquire Kitchen food does look good and better than Shogun. For the price that they pay for Shogun there I guess those family can hv a good meal in Esquire already.

Shogun there nowadays I think not many ppl patronize that place already. I guess they knew the sushi & sashimi wasn't so fresh.

Eh, that day I went to Shogun in One Utama.. I have no comment of the food, not really fresh but acceptable. And they gave us cream-baked oyster. They said its their special menu, and each customer get to eat ONE only. Not available at the buffet counter.

I don't know if its my shoes or what, I found their floor very slipery :D

After hearing this, I've made up my mind not to visit that place .... and yet I find so many ppl so curious and adventurous to try out this place ... I wonder actually how many ppl do go back there again to hv their meals

Pass by Joyoga before. Ambience is great! But I think for me, hv to wait for my bonus day only get to go there. :o

I went to JOGOYA earlier of this month.

My wife and I went there for the cheapest time..that's 2-4pm, I think RM 78.00 lar...quite a lot ler.

First of all, most of the staff are Myanmar but there are some locals(little).

The atmosphere are nice and good

The sashimi and sushi are definitely freshier than shogun's.

There are some dim sum, sushi, sashimi and what they call as east west dish(is it call fusion?) which is good.

My wife love the lobster soup(whole lobster). You should try.

There are clips on your table which you can drop it into any of the plate in front of the dish you wish to order.

There are lots of dish (steam fish, fried fish, fried prawn, steam prawn, chicken, beef, vegetable, fried lala and etc). Even the duck meat are much better than the normal duck meat in pudu(not to mention the duck in USJ 2).

There are thai coconut milk (which is better than local's, i can tell you this..the malay couple on the next table probably drink no less than 3-4 each). there are normal stuff like "kau" watermelon water and other fruits.

On the desert, the desert are yummy. custard with melt sugar. Delicious cookies and original swiss ice cream.

Please do not even try to order WASABI BEEF. I only eat one piece Sorry to say this but I got to hide most of the wasabi beef on eaten food..cause it's charge if I do not finish the food. Don't say I dun tell you. ok.

Other than this, what I can tell you is...My wife actually give up on Shogun and will choose JOGOYA now.

What I can say is JOGOYA is the high end of SHOGUN.

what can you expect? do not expect traditional stuff. Expect new stuff..fusion?

And pls go between 2-4pm as it is cheapest then.

Aiseh kokomo, where do you think I got the number from. :)

For a buffet, there is nothing much to complain but of course, one can't compare with Shangri-La standards. As for quality and authenticity of Japanese cuisine run by a Taiwanese chain, I need to follow the words of my late father (god bless his soul), who said, "Son, if you got nothing good to say, don't say anything". My lips are sealed.

Dine at the Jogoya with my wifey on Saturday evening.

The setting and the ambience are quite nice, compared to most of the jap buffet restaurant. Paid RM200++ (after 15% tax) for both of us, RM88++ per pax.

The food are quite nice, very very fresh, and lot's of variety to choose from also. I'll say their have the most food variety among all of the buffet restaurant we have visited. Our fav is the king crab paper steamboat, this is the first time we tasted the king crab... really yummy and we ordered a second helping :p
The raw food counter are also quite nice, we ate lot's of sashimi, I think about 3 small plates full of raw fish :p The wasabi they used also is the original wasabi grated directly from the fresh wasabi root, where you still can see the root fibre, unlike some of those cheap wasabi made from powder. Lot's of seafood variety, fresh oyster is one of the most popular item... We had the fried whole crab (much better than most of the crab selling out there) and a whole softshell crab. Too bad didn't see any lobster :p and also didn't see Unagi :(
Beverage & dessert got lots of variety also. Ice-blended cuppocino, fresh fruit juices, coffee, tea, & soft drink, our fav is the whole coconut.... we finished 6 coconuts :p
Dessert they have variety of cookies, egg tart also not bad, and the cheese cakes, and variety of mousse... arr.... am drooling right now.... :p Not to forget the nice Movenpick ice-cream from switzerland.

Service wise also not bad, the staffs are very polite & courteous... But I can see many foreign workers there also. Another good thing is their toilet, now that's what I called a 5-stars toilet, you'll have to visit it to know how good is it. :p

That night we ate until we can barely walk back to the carpark :p We haven't had a really nice buffet like this for ages already.... Most of the buffet out there served so so quality food only, but this one is really good quality and fresh and really worth the price. Too bad can't go back there too often... wallet cannot take it :p

Hiyiiiiii guys!!!!!!!! After the Shogun dinner, my stomach is as per normal! Kekeke.... Okok, below are my comments on the food and restaurant....

Ermm, i would say Shogun is a better place then Saisaki. The ambience is better and cleaner.... Food wise, i find it moderate lah, nothing really impressive..... Lots of mixed local and korean food as well.....Sashimi not very fresh but acceptable (no tummy upset, YET), Tampura better than saisaki and the food supply is more then enough to cater, so basically you dont really have to wait for them to replenish food.

I think given a chance, i dont mind going back there again. I also heard that saisaki is closed down for renovation. Will the food quality increase after the re opening? Gotta find out!

I personally still prefer Zen then Shogun. But again, it is up to the individual. Have not tried Joyoga, heard good and bad comments from clients and friends, guess tht just have to find it myself..... Diet plan failed lastnite, as if the word "On Diet" sounds alien to me!! Had a good time there though....

Plenty of food to be served there as well. As others has already commented in here. Do try it and let us know your comments in here ya.

whoaaa.. dont take it for granted.. i dont know about weekdays but i was in 1u on a Saturday.. was nicely sitting at Bakerzin.. waiting till it was like 7-8pm so we could go eat.. assuming there's alot of space so it wouldn't be hard to get a table for 3 of us..

When we got there, whoaaaa the amount of people waiting was just crazy.. and there were 32 tables in front of us.. ahha

So.. I highly advice you to make reservations ;p

Seriously that many ppl ar? Hmmm ... then lucky thing SunwayKid has got these contact no. with him. He is the walkin' phone book for food reservations. :D Anyway, SUnwayKid ... thanks for the contact no. Anyone else that wanna try it and make reservation, better take down these numbers.

So Penny, did u still manage to try Shogun anot? After waitin' for so long, did u gave up or you cont. to wait till you get a sit in there?

Aiyoh...Kokomo, not that lah. I am just kiasu - don't like to wait and see other people whack all the good stuff and just left the crumbs. When I go buffet, I want to attack the food straight away, without wasting any time, especially at buffet where time is a factor - and that is when those numbers comes in handy.

:)

Yea SunwayKid, for you to hv all these numbers are handy for us. Hehe .... :D Anyway, to hv reservation numbers are much easier & less hassle than to wait there.

Movie is a confirm thing must make reservation. No reservation can forget bout watching movie for that nite. Q is so long that practically you might hv to stand in-line right up to counter there for bout an hour or so. Ridiculous!

Back to Shogun, most time I pass by there, not many ppl that time or surely got place to sit. So I won't know that place is actually that packed.

So how was your food there? Good? So-so? Bad? (can't be bad since you enjoyed yourself there together wif your family) :) 1/2 hour is a pretty long wait. Lucky thing is in a complex got other things to see or still walk around.

LOL @ Kokomo posting like mad!

Shogun is nothing to shout about but definitely better than Saisaki (heard they are from the same group?). The food was ok but the sashimi wasn't all that fresh (I know coz I hurled after taking the salmon sashimi). Maybe it was just my luck that day.

But guys, give it a go coz I know many who love that place.

(Jogoya is the next place I'm gonna try)

I went once and sat in toilet the next day. I ate shashimi, but have always eaten shashimi at other places and nothine has ever happened.

My personal preference, no more 2nd time. I doesn't taste authentic. I t serves no unagi, no miso soup, no chahan, even the chawan mushi sucks. It doesn't even have white jap rice. Before I knew it's opened by a taiwanese, I oredi suspected it not opened by a jap. The crabs are not live, I saw them taking out from the fridge, dead and wrapped in film, and practically tasteless (in terms of crab taste).

The only thing I'd say nice abt this place, the desserts and icecream, drinks, and bamboo charcoal jelly. That's all. Food, nah, go for Ryu Men Tei, eat ur fill with half the price only.

Earlier on went to Subang Parade .. pass by this new japanese sushi called Sakae Sushi. Price not bad .. and food very fresh & tasty.

I luv their soft shell crap for only RM6.90 (got 2 crabs in 1 plate) plus their unagi roll .. wahhh ... the unagi wrapped the rice wif salmon skin which is so crispy n their fresh cucumber. :) Had few plates of that .. did try their other things as well. Really good and can say now this is better than Sushi King & Gengki Sushi as well .. in terms of service and food.

1 thing is, their soya sauce dun put so much .. very da 'kiam' .. might jz spoil some of your taste butts. Happy tryin' folks!~

Sakaibear. If you're a meat person, there's this one place near to Atria PJ called chucaracia or sumthin.... dunno lah.... They bring the meats-on-skewers to your table and slice em fresh for you... Not sure about the price though. Kress, do you the name of the place ar? Right beside maybank behind atria.

I think we should ditch the idea of Shogun and head straight to Jogoya. Food is good (esp the salmon sashimi), great spread, and yes, lots of meat too (for the meat-lovers).

One thing I don't get - they have a section called Indian Cuisine (which I didn't bother with). But hey, I ain't complainin'.

You can practically have your tea, dinner and supper there coz it's open from 5pm to midnight. Go after 9.30pm and you get RM10 off.

The restaurant is non-smoking but there is a smoking room at the end of the restaurant (yes, I checked that out esp for Sakai *wink*)

And yes, Eve, Carnaval Churrascaria looks good. Someone told me the food's good but I can't remember which friend now. Just holler, I'm game!

kokomo

Great job sherry! Hehe .. a complete details on Jogoya esp. after 9.30pm and RM10 off.

By your description, who ain't game for it. I believe most of us are already salivating & waitin' for the right time to hit for it. Right? ;)

Aiseh, the smokers corner at the end of the restaurant .. this tells you that, you sit near there, there is a pipe for you, hold it while you smoke .. then puff it out into that pipe which links to outside. Environment friendly. :)

Don't have to remember which friend tells you what and where is good. Just remember us usj.com forumers will do. Haha ....
