No access to highway shocks residents

By Dharmender Singh

RESIDENTS in Seri Kembangan are shocked after learning that the Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Dedicated Highway will pass over Jalan Putra Permai, which connects the Seri Kembangan town and the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), but will not provide access to motorists there.

Pusat Bandar Putra Permai resident Brenda Fernandez said the highway would pass over Jalan Putra Permai near the halfway point of the road and there was ample land around it to create a simple interchange for the residents in the area to use.

She said without an access road from Jalan Putra Permai residents would have to travel southwards for over 15km to Putrajaya in order to enter the dedicated highway and head north again to Kuala Lumpur.

Part of a small hill being cut along Jalan Putra Permai, Seri Kembangan, for the construction of a flyover that will be part of the KL-Putrajaya Dedicated Highway.
She said the other access to the dedicated highway from the Bukit Jalil Highway would be the LDP but it would be of little use to residents during peak hours as it would be congested at those hours.

Another resident Zahar Zulkarnain said he could not understand why the authorities had approved the highway's design without taking into account how it could help reduce congestion and traffic flow problems in the areas it passed through.

He said an increasing number of Seri Kembangan and Putra Permai residents were starting to use Jalan Putra Permai to head to the LDP to go to work daily as the road through Seri Kembangan town was now too badly congested during peak hours.

“There is already a queue forming at the Seri Kembangan interchange of the LDP in the mornings now and this situation is only going to get worse as more and more people shift into the thousands of residential units that have or are being constructed in Putra Permai,” he said.

Serdang MP Datuk Yap Pian Hon said he too was surprised when he found out that residents in Seri Kembangan would not be able to enjoy the convenience of the RM1.2bil dedicated highway even though it would pass close to their homes.

“About 100,000 residential units will be built around the Putra Permai area by the time all the development there is completed and access to the dedicated highway will help to avoid serious traffic jams in the future,” he said.

He said Seri Kembangan town was already badly congested and once the Putra Permai area was fully developed the number of vehicles on the road would create traffic chaos there.

Yap said he had recently written to the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) to bring the problem to its attention and provide the figures on the number of houses and estimated traffic volume to show the seriously of the problem.

He said he had also pointed out to the authority that the concessionaire of the dedicated highway would stand to gain from the toll collection from motorists from Seri Kembangan.

But there are people who doesn't want any access to the highways. They prefer a link into USJ instead of KESAS.

One day, the residents will thank their lucky star that this Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Dedicated Highway passes over their heads and Jalan Putra Permai. At least they got to keep their peace of mind. If not they will go botak not being shaved by the police but by tearing their hair off over the thousands of vehicles passing through their neighbourhood.
