Last Sat I was attracted by this old newspapers truck announcing in cantonese “Old newspapers Yat Lam RM4.00” and also in Malay “Surat Khabar satu tingkat RM4.00”, which was above the usual price of RM3.50 one handspan. So I asked the collector to stop by and pick-up the old newspapers from my house (in USJ). Later I was surprised that the collector told me the rate of RM4.00 was measured by one arm length instead of one handspan because the price of newspapers was dropped recently.

I didn’t trust him but still sold him the papers since I had already removed it from the store room.

The measurement of one arm length = 3 handspans or more, is it true that the price of old newspapers has been dropped so much? I sold it last month to a different collector for RM3.50 per one handspan.

wah ng c kakilang tapi ...er....
hey rm3.50 4 a hand span ? just what is a hand span - is it from tip of thumb 2 tip of pinky? thats how d con fellas (yeah, damsels too) measure at my place, but rm3.50? wow, thats heaven. i've had enuf of such robbery that i banned them from d vicinity of my humble abode. now i fill up my boot n back seat with 2 or 3 mths cow poe chee n junk mail, n send em 2 a "collection agency" which looks more like d old seri petaling landfill. if u really get 350sen a hand span, even if yr hand is from d tip of yr tallman 2 yr elbow, i'm gonna hv 2 make friends with yr collector. 7 stacks high as my tallman 2 elbow shud hv earned me not less than rm22.50 from yr fella - i got a measely 1400 sen - by weight - n transport was on me too.

Sell the newspapers, bottles etc to the recycling centre at Giant USJ. You don't get cash thou but in the form of Giant Vouchers. Only setback is you must sent it there yourself. Bring the kids along when you go there and the kids will learn something about recycling! :D

At Giant its properly weighed..fair enough!.
ALL those mobile recycle collectors are cheats as long as its not properly weighed with a machine. Using the hand length to measure is tantamount to absurdity and blatantly exploiting seller's gullibility.
I think I'll attempt to buy a used weighing machine, bring it out, ask the collector ascertain exactly price per kilo, only then make or break the deal..and have the pleasure of seeing him either lock jaw or frown!
Its not the matter of money here but to ensure we're NOT stupid or guillable! :D

I don't see the point of @ RM"whatever" when those cheats use length of arm, hand or leg to ascertain the actual weight. Its taking one for a fool!

Maybe I should encourage you folks to tell them mobile recyclers to bring a proper weighing machine if they wanna deal, if don't have..tell them buzz off!
The culture HAS to change! and its to your advantage in promoting fair business ethics and practice.

What about this guy who took everything (about 4 feet high worth about RM 18.66) away from me and just say thank you and just walked off last month. I called out to him and asked him how much he was going to pay me. He then showed me the small lorry which was parked away from my sight with the name Sau Cheng Lum painted on it. Most of you know that my Cantonese is half past six and I thought Sau Cheng Lum is his boss’ name but it turned out to be a charity organisation in Old Klang Road and what he collected from me was supposed to be my donation. I told him that he should not be so snaky as to behave in that manner and should have told me up front and let me decide. When he realized that I was upset and felt cheated, he offered to unload all my newspaper but I told him that was the first and last time he would have them for free. I don’t like to deal with such people as I don’t trust them. So did anyone check out the so called ‘charity recycler’ such as the one found next to the Apollo coffee shop at USJ 4 a genuine charity worker? They dared to use MPSJ logo in their banners and because of this, their banners are left untouched by MPSJ. But how honest are they? I don’t want them to collect tons of recycled materials in the name of charity for free and contribute only a pittance to the beneficiary.

Wow! classic example of deceit.
Sorry to hear this kind of ploy individuals will go to. We have to be more alert and question if necessary. Its heart sickening to feel cheated!. :(

Happened to me before as well. Only caught them once quietly helping themselves to the old newspapers at the front porch. Ask them what they were doing - they say taking for charity to a one ton unmarked lorry!

What charity and phone number - they couldn't answer. So told them to wait whilst I call the police to pick them up for a charity ride - instead they left rather fast.

Those buying in kilos cheat by weight. 5 kg of old newspapers weighed previously in my grocery stores' scale weighed only 2.8kg on the paper lama man's scale. I refused to sell him. So, beware of these cheats!!
