I suspect nearly everyone reading this enjoys the taste of potato chips. However, they are clearly one of the most toxic processed foods you can eat. Do you really want to trade a few moments of taste pleasure for cancer ? ........................

The Most Dangerous Potato Chips to Eat

Public knowledge of the serious dangers found in potato chips may finally be surfacing. The California-based Environmental Law Foundation (ELF) has filed notices with the state's attorney general against potato chip manufacturers:

Lay's potato chip maker PepsiCo Inc.
Pringles maker Proctor & Gamble Co.
Cape Cod potato chip parent Lance Inc.
Kettle Chips maker Kettle Foods Inc.
... that would require them to place labels on their products warning consumers about the high levels of acrylamide found inside. Acrylamide is formed when starchy foods are baked or fried at high temperatures and is considered a cancer-causing chemical by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

Manufacturers who sell their products without such warnings are in violation of California law, California Proposition 65.

The attorney general's office has 60 days to decide to pursue the case; if the state declines, the ELF will file lawsuits against the companies.

What Do the Chip Makers Have to Say?

The reaction from the chip makers was on the defensive ... though the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) wavering position on the dangers of acrylamide certainly doesn't help.

Perhaps the FDA should review the report developed by the ELF that listed just how far various chip brands exceeded the state's required warning levels for acrylamide. The offenders include:

Cape Cod Robust Russet: 910 times
Kettle Chips (lightly salted): 505 times
Kettle Chips (honey dijon): 495 times
Pringles Snack Stacks (pizza-flavored): 170 times
Lay's Baked: 150 times

Chew on that ...

Potato chips are loaded with acrylamide. This is only one of the many side effects that occur when food is highly processed; for instance, using high temperatures to cook foods can contribute to the formation of carcinogenic substances. Another similar example occurs when meats are cooked at high temperatures. In this case, heterocyclic amines can be formed.

Ideally, you should consume foods that are minimally processed to avoid these types of toxic byproducts. I assure you that there are many others, most of which have yet to be discovered. Acrylamides have only been known for a few years and many experts discounted them when they were first discovered.

In the best case, over half of your foods should be uncooked and eaten in the raw state. My diet is typically about 80 percent to 90 percent raw foods, and I find it is one of the major ways that I am able to remain healthy and avoid all sorts of health problems and challenges.

It may take you awhile to have more than 50 percent of your diet raw but start by throwing out the obvious and well-known processed foods that there is absolutely no excuse to consume:

[B]Doughnuts
French fries and potato chips
All sodas

Ahh.....my favourite potato chips are Lays and RUffles both by Pepsico. Will I stop eating them? No.

If people don't read the flea market section just because I want to sell some merchandise, does that give me the right to post it in the main forum? :)

I think Evelyn Lim is just being polite. If you want it direct, you shouldn't SPAM the main forum with all the cut and paste crab. Move it, either willingly or perhaps with the MOD's push, to the health forum - for those who believe a meal of coke and chips will eventually kill them, they will read it and be grateful to you eternally!

i've totally agree that we need to stop posting this kind of crap on usj.com. emails we receive many moons ago, only now received by some and immediately it is on this forum like it is the latest news, a new cola is found!!! and without checking the facts. And yes margerine is black, only when you add some shoe polish to it and stir it up :( Please spare us the bandwidth, talk kopitiam stuff is better than all this crap....

The ultimate target of my posting is to create awareness about life. Not just specifically on food as it seems. Think aloud, it is regarding the consumer & human right to know what they are eating for living, the food manufacturers' responsibility & accountability when they are making money, the monopoly of the powerful enterprises over the government monitoring role should be unveiled, the social cost for public medication as a result of health caused by the hidden toxins in diet, etc. Or chit-chating over kopitiam stuff a culture and favor in this main forum ?

be acoountable for what you post for a start. don't take emails and post it here without checking the facts. Most of us have received the mails as well but you don't see us posting it here, do you? Coke thread an example. Margerine black for an example. You don't built credibility based on postings things that you have not checked. It is great you are trying to educate all of us and giving us awareness but do so with facts. you can call it human rights but one can life a vegetarian if he thinks there is so much abuse by food manufacturers or due to animal rights. Your choice. Take it up with the manufacturers if you believe so strongly or some consumer organisation.

the forum as you can see has been receiving thread frenzy from you. Not sure how many are reading your post anymore as some think it is spam. And there is lots of difference between USA and Malaysia in terms of diet regardless of the same type of supermarkets. And the health section is the right section.

Just some feedback. I'll not post anymore on your threads/postings. Cao.

Ah Sh**, I eat potatoes chips a lot lar. and coke too. I will be more conscious from now on.

I think that this article might change your mind about that.

A series of important Canadian personalities volunteered to have their blood tested for common carcinogens and pollutants. Even the most "clean living" among them, an artist named Robert Bateman, tested positive for traces of 48 different chemicals including 32 that cause cancer.

It's not a surprise that cancer are rapidly becoming the most common cause of death...might as well live as you wish...you can make the effort to live clean, but the fact is, the chemicals are everywhere and they are going to have an effect on your DNA.

Just a thought. Check out the attachement.

It is a fact that Life Ranger is blatantly spamming here even after being indicated to post it on the right health sub-forum. The intention may be noble but overdoing it is somewhat becoming nauseating.....to the extent of just shutting off on whatever he posted.
